Looking at that picture - where the rebar goes into what is already poured on the right - they don't even have the rebar up in the concrete. It is laying on the ground - doing nothing. That is why I always specify rebar chairs.

Ummm... Yeah... Right...

Oh, isn't that rebar going into the slab on the right? It looked like what was on the right was already poured with the rebar sticking out of it waiting to pour the next section...

My apologies if I misunderstood the photo - but I still stand by my statements. In the bottom third is good. But about the fourth to seventh bars from the back look like they are going into the underlayment... :)

I don't think you answered a question from a while back... what did they do to assure you will not get water coming in from above?

Very impressive.

Just when you think you've seen the best garage build ever on this site someone comes along and tops it. I don't know what anyone could do to top this garage though. Undergound tunnels, spiral staircases & moving book cases are the greatest. Along with that beautiful mountain back drop. My hats off to you and enjoy.

Do they drill the other slab and pin the rebar into it? I know when I had concrete poured I specified that be done. That way if the new would happen to settle it will not let a step form between one and the other. I poured a sidewalk a few years back and had rebar (I rebar all concrete) but failed to pin it back into the existing walk. With the Spring thaw and refreezing the ground will frost heave and it will leave a 1 1/2" step until the ground thaws completely then it is flush. The sidewalk has never cracked from moving but I have kicked that step many a time in the winter. And it will stop the snowblower real quick when you forget about it. LOL!!!

Yea, water anywhere underground. How did they seal the joint between the walls and the upper slabs?

Yep, that is how it is supposed to be done. Too many contractors don't want to take the time, though.

Fantastic staircase! My shop is rather barn shaped and my original plan called for a spiral staircase to be housed inside a silo at one end as a means of getting to the second floor - your photo reminds me of the decision to forego the silo but gets the juices flowing again.

What is the diameter of your spiral staircase?

If you get a chance, please post up how they dealt with the waterproofing, etc. I'd like to know for the future.

Nice staircase. Good call on the treads.

Since this is basically IN the garage (leading downstairs to the bunker area) I wanted it very "guyish" so I had them do diamond plate steps, and powdercoated in a chrome/stainless steel silver finish.

Should be installed on Monday. :bounce:

Looks great.

I hope I'm wrong but I foresee a lot of that finish getting chipped or worn off when they use slings to suspend / lower it into place next week.

The primer on the last one we did at work was so scraped and chipped by the time it was finally in place that they could have just omitted that step in the shop and had it all field applied.

I wonder how something like Rhino Linings or LineX would wear as a stear tread material and yet be more slip resistant than painted or powder coated steel.

I like the diamond plate look. Are the downstairs rooms framed yet?

Re: The "Bunker" garage is almost complete!

excellent work so far Utah...suspended slab garages are quite common around here. I was building a house a few years ago on a corner lot in a subdivision. My garage was a typical 3 car attached about 27x35 up top and the drive around back had 2 doors and a work shop area, basically another 27x35 right below the other. What I mean is, 3car up and 3 car below. I didnot do the spiral staircase, it was just a typical foldback stairway. The cost for this was much cheaper than building a detached. $15k was what the lower garage would cost without the driveway leading up to it.
I have another friend here that has his woodshop under his 3car attached, his builder charged his $10k for that. He just has a double door to access it from the outside.
Very cool though, please post some more pics as you get them.

How did they waterproof the conctete?
My dad has a basement underground, and he constantly has problems with moisture, and high humidity down there.
