Roof or gutters 1st?

Gotta put a new asphalt shingle roof on the house.

The gutters are **** so I'm going to take the oppertunity to have new continous gutters and downspouts installed at roughly the same time.

Should I do the roof 1st, then get the gutters installed? Or gutters 1st then the roof? Does it matter?

Roof first. The gutters can get filled with roofing material, and nails if the roof is going to be stripped. Plus, having the ladder lean on the gutters while going up up a ladder with a bundle on the shoulders can lead to gutter deformation. Not saying it will happen, but the chance is there.

Definitely roof first, you can imagine all the stuff which goes over the edge of the roof, ladders resting on the fascia, etc.

I've just done last year and as everyone said, you're going to do the roof first then gutters...

One hint on gutters. If you normally use a ladder at only one spot on roof have the gutter installers to use extra hangers in that area to keep the ladder from mashing in the gutter.

If you are using vinyl drip edge, have the roofers install when they install the first course of shingles. It will be easier than the gutter contracter having to lift the shingle and work around nails, etc..

Don't use the long spikes, make sure the gutter guy uses the screw in clips.

If you are doing a roof, look into vent caps for the peak, small bucks for a nice cool attic.

Around here we just do roofs with no gutters. It doesn't rain enough to fool with gutters. If I lived where it rained some, I would do the roof first so the gutters would not get bent or damaged while the roof was being installed.

I would respectfully disagree. How are you going to get the gutter flange under starter course if you do the roof first? With great difficulty!

Also, around here we use gutter support brackets that nail into the rafters. You wouldn't be able to nail them if the roof were already installed.

Use a ladder roof support bracket in order to avoid having the ladder crush the gutter. It's much safer and more stable than leaning the ladder against the roof or the gutters.

Roof definitely first. New gutters will get marked up and filled with **** if the roof is done after the gutters.

I used gutter hangers that screwed/nailed to the deck. Put them over the starter course and under the first course. No problems. I used 1 5/8" coated deck screws, not nails - for future service. Gutters I used have no flange and I did not want to spike them into my new Hardi facia material.

Like WesTex said - when it does finally rain we just walk around in it. I only put a gutter on the front side to channel water away from the big door. Need a couple of small runs on the house, only to move water away from exit areas. The rest is don't care.

For us rain is an exciting event. If you have gutters, you can't see the water run off the roof. If you had gutters, you would just have to spend time cleaning out the dirt (dust) that collects in the low spots. I just wish we could get some of that Florida rain---just a little!

You seem to build your gutters with a technology that is very uncommon. We don't have a "gutter flange" and certainly don't nail anything to or under the roofing. The gutters attach to the fascia board only.

They don't call us mossbacks for nothing. It rains all the time here.
