The instructions state:

The vent must extend at least 3' (1m) above the highest point
where it passes through a roof of a building and at least 2’
(0.6m) higher than any part of a building within a horizontal
distance of 10' (3.05m) unless otherwise specified by the
(American) National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 or (Canada)
CAN/CGA-B149 Installation Code

The way I read this is that the vent tube must stick out of my roof by a minimum of 36". If this is true, why do you only need to have a horizontally vented unit protrude 12" from the side wall? It seems like the would be the same. I do not like the idea of a 36" tube sticking out of the top of my garage because the garage attached to the front of my house either vent would be very obvious from the street.

Any way around this?

Not really. I had the same problem. The best thing I could do is vent it out the side of my garage which I can see from the street. I could go through the top, but I can see that pretty obviously from the backyard which I didnt really want either.

IMO... the BBQ grille paint did wonders for making mine blend in better. Not sure how it will hold up long term on the galv. But heck, redoing it every couple years if even necessary is better than looking at a big ugly wart....

Google the installation manual for the hot dawg 45,000 it has different spec's.I have a 4/12 roof and the nearest taller roof is 14' away and the peak is 12' away I installed mine with a 2' height and it works fine.If I ever go to sell it and an inspector say's something about it I can just remove the cap and put another section of pipe in.The height is mainly for snowfall but I live in south jersey and we don't get to many big storms.I do remember about fifteen yrs. ago we got a bad storm and a retirment development they had built had real short vents that got covered over the fire dept. had to come out and clear all the vents.

Helpful tips guys. Whatever I decide to go with, I will definitely be doing the BBQ paint, as that seemed to make a huge difference in that pic above.
