+1 I would find a section like this helpful.

Seconded. Especially those of us with only a single car garage where we have to maximize space.

Thirded.

A cabinet, storage, bench forum is a great idea and I imagine would generate a lot of views. After all, the cabinets and benches are one of the main arteries of a garage.

Forth, I needed the section when I was doing mine. I think it would stream line the forums. I hate using the search feature. someone mentions cabinets in a thread and there is a search all in it's own.

I would like to see something like this aswell. I came here expecting to find some ideas on storing stuff and neat organizational ideas. However I have to search to find something relevant. I would rather have a section that I could browse through.

Storage would be good, it covers a lot more than just cabinets. I'm a storage junky of late. I've got an unnatural appreciation for racking and storage solutions.

I like the idea of a storage, organization and work surface forum.

GREAT Idea!!! It's hard to find examples by sifting through posts or searching. I'm planning my cabinets etc. now so any ideas would be nice.

So do we have to contact someone, or will the powers that be, just decide? I was really surprised that Storage/Organization wasn't a sub forum, when I joined.

I'm in for your suggestion. It is surprising this hasn't been posted before? I spend 90% of my time here looking at cabinet ideas.

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

Things been up a month, you have like 8 posts on it. You want a section for cabinets that has 8 posts on a thread for it in a month. Not a lot of volume. Sad to me, I put a build for some cabs on here, let's see how fast that settles to the 52nd page.
Truth be told I don't think most of the guys on this forum want to do much or be very informed, they just want to yap or look at pictures or whine about poor experiences, a lot of the bull **** threads getting a ton of hits, anything really informative gets pushed to the back. Sort of disheartening. It's a great format and a great place potentially. just starting to get beat down over all of the BS volume pushing good content to the back.
And desperately trying to not get sucked into it.
Oh well.

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

I agree that there should be a section for storage. I have a small garage (19x19), so I'm always looking for storage ideas. Frank The Plumber has a valid point about there only being 8 posts in a month. Maybe the majority of the members don't even look in the "Questions & Suggestions". Perhaps if this thread was posted in the General Discussion area, it would get more views/responses. Any thoughts on that idea? Anyone know if there is there a certain number of replies that would be required before the site administrator would create a new section?

Awesome idea! You can have it after we establish a compressor section.

I support the storage/box/workbench section. Whether it's DIY, box store or truck bought, there's a need for storage in every garage and the search page doesn't necessarily do justice to that.

yeah, i'd like to see a cabinet section as well... it would be nice. instead of doing a search on 'cabinet' and bringing back 20 pages of everything.

I subscribe to half of the new garage builds just so I can glean ideas for storage solutions from what other guys are doing. Some of the guys on here come up with pretty incredible and genius ideas. It'd be nice to see more without having to sift thru all the clutter of a general search.

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

Great idea! Many of us here are unrepentant pack rats and the problem I have is finding something I KNOW I have, but cannot remember where I stuck it. A garage cabinet/storage section would be a great place for members to share their ORGANIZING tips, tricks, plans, devices, and methods! There is nothing more frustrating than spending hours on a 10 minute task just because we can't find what we need, when we need it. A separate section for cabinet/storage/ORGANIZING would do us all a world of good.

I like the idea, I've stolen some ideas off of here from others for my build, but it seems like they're few and far between and kind of scattered. One big section for all cabinets, shelving, storage organization would be great! I vote for yes!

Sounds great to me. I just bought a place that has a great area in the garage to build a bench and cabinets and I'd certainly enjoy seeing others' ideas. I subscribed to Family Handyman for a few years and kept all the old issues. They often have some great garage ideas.

I would like to see one as well, just look at the size of the home built work bench thread.

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

Lets keep this thread going and try to get this up. I dont understand why it is not there already. Yes, It will be small at first It takes time for threads to grow, and it will. The main categories for any garage would be Floor, Heat/Air, Lighting, Paint and STORAGE AND CABINETS..
any tool website or garage design site you go to has those areas that are changed to use or designed around the style. Look at any high end garage and they are nothing but
  • Nice floors
  • Cool wall paint schemes
  • Nice lighting
  • Decor
  • and Killer Cabinets or Storage!!!!!!
Any ideas we get that we can do to better our garages at a creative price. That is most of what makes these sites thrive because people like to be creative and share their ideas to help others.
I did my whole shop very cheap because of ideas I got from high end garages that I will never afford and websites like this one. I took those styles and ideas to be creative on a budget. I used FREE old office cabinets I painted and trimmed with aluminum, FREE paint(left over from house painting),Cheap decor ideas,Super cheap on sale garage cabinets from lowes, and saved some money for a quality floor and have created a super clean garage for around $2500.

We need this Cabinet and Storage area to get creative ideas.

i for one am against it. I have participated of forums that have fragmented into many subforums until all was lost. How many subforums do you think a forum can support until in implodes? You have the ability to use tags, that would be a better route for searching out specific subjects you want to track.

I definitely support the idea of a storage section. To be honest, I was a little surprised there wasn't one when I signed on. It was the first section I looked for because I like seeing how people organize their things for ideas.

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

Not that I oppose the Storage Sub-Forum, but I started a thread on my cabinet build just yesterday and it's already getting lost in the slow moving fabrication & techniques forum. Not sure if there is much interest here.

Storage as a general topic may be better than a cabinet centered one, but I think Frank the Plumber is right - there is so much garbage threads lately that are full of non-garage related topics that the meaningful ones get lost in the shuffle. I'm pretty tired of having to scroll through several pages of threads to find one that has meaningful content.

Its a fair point, afterall one of the nice things about this site is that its not 500 different subforums. However what a storage/organization/whatever forum might do is help encourage similar threads, and thats a good thing. There are a lot of good threads about the topic on here, but we could always use more.

Of course it doesn't matter too much to me, because most of the time I just look at the New Posts.

I would have to say that is probably the main reason I joined not to long ago, If I can find this again when I get slider doors on my racks I would gladly post a picture. Yea that would be my dirty corner.

You know Larry, I agree with this point.

After thinking about it a little more, there's plenty of places to add content for whatever topic. I think I'm going to start working on my own storage thread. I've got a bunch to share.

I understand about having sub-forums under even more sub forums. I think you can break it down to a reasonable amount thought. What are the major components of a Garage???

Flooring
Lighting
Cabinet/Storage
Accessories: Compressors, HVAC, Tools

The problem with trying to do searches is sometime you don't know what your looking for until you see it. Sometimes people spell stuff wrong. Or they spell it right for their region.. Like if you lived in England and you made some tyre storage, then I go looking for that thread I saw doing a search for tire storage. I'm not saying this is going to save the planet, I'm just saying a little organization goes a long way.

Wanna see a forum that went crazy with sub-forums...

Re: wHY NOT HAVE A GARAGE CABINET OR STORAGE SECTION???

Oh man... 25 forum sections! That place is about as complicated as learning to use an actual CNC. :D

I've been a member a while but just recently have spent a lot more time here. I've never visited a few sections, like lighting and such. However, I've been over at the HAMB a long time and lurked casually since probably 03/04. I've really seen that place develop into a great place and I'm sure the same will be true here. Ryan and crew have really done a great job.

What I do know is that I've already come across a bunch of great people here and that, to me, is the most important thing. Everything will get worked out... storage forum or not.

Where are the pics?

I am about to move in to my new place and was looking for ideas. Guess I will have to search for hours and hours to find ideas.

I am a newbie, just joined to be able to look at the images people attach. I am looking at building a new small garage in a couple months. I agree that a cabinet subforum would be a great idea. I have seen a few things I'd like to do since I joined here, and have learned a lot. By creating a cabinet subforum, I would be able to look for cabinet ideas before I build, and possibly plan my build around some storage ideas.

Started a thread called Garage Cabinets and Storage. Maybe it's the name I don't know but I've only got 25 posts and it's now on page 4 of the General Garage Discussion section. I was wondering if I could quote from one thread to another? That way when someone post a new photo or starts a thread about cabinets and storage stuff, I could move that post to the cabinet and storage post to keep it fresh and on the first page.

All I can add is this;

The Let's see your toolbox thread has more posts than Flooring, Heating & AC, Lighting & Electrical and Garage Gallery sections have threads. And that's just for tool boxes and only in one single thread.

Clearly Tool Boxes and Storage would be a very popular section. I would be willing to wager it would get more daily posts than any of the above mentioned sections.

I concur w/ Balane. Love "Let's see your toolbox thread" and think something similar for storage would be a hit!
