Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

[QUOTE=macgee;4208056]I am serious :)

But in all seriousness, jwsia should keep it; it's a really good vice but I can totally understand where he's coming from. I remember when I first saw Reeds...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

You would be hard pressed to find better quality vise then that. Those vises have backlash adjustments, oil ports, and are tough as nails. IMHO, much better then overpriced Wilton's. 50 bucks was a...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Craftsman vises seem to be Rock Island, then Reed followed by Columbian. The 519x series are between Reed and Columbian era. The vise has the stout weight and oiling ports, which seem Reed like. The...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Quick question about your spindle slop, do you have any movement of the main nut while rotating the handle? It seems that some of my vises suffer from slop from the main nut being torqued over the...

I used a cheap foam roller for mine, it is thick stuff. Just throw away when done.

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

The Columbian D series are workshop vises. They are good light to medium duty, perfect for homeowner. The older ones have the cutoff tool, newer ones don't. Newer ones are also marked with a M and a...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Sawdust one is a Columbian. The circle is actually a octagon with letter M inside. It stands for malleable. It probably has the vertical lettering as opposed to the earlier curved style.

Re: Picked up a bench grinder

You can remove the rivets by cutting a slot in them with a dremel cut off wheel, and then using a screwdriver to back them out. Replace them with new drive rivets.

Re: Craftsman 10 drawer toolbox restore

Yes, I've seen Verde Green. I can even get a can, as an old hardware store here has it. I just seem to be drawn to the light blue instead. Here is a pic of Hammerite gray done with a roller. I like...

Re: Craftsman 10 drawer toolbox restore

Well, I've been struggling like you to match old Craftsman hammered gray. I just painted something with rust oleum gray and something else with hammerite gray. Neither matches that bluish/green gray...

Re: Columbian No 604

Great find, great price. I have a soft spot for Columbians. While they don't have the mass of others, due to their hollow castings, they are very strong. They not very flashy, they just work.

Re: Can anyone tell me about this vise?

If you don't see a name on it, buy it!

Then that allows the rest of us vise guys to fight over the good American made ones. :D

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

I think around 1960's. Marx toys were pretty popular during that time.

Re: School me on vises.

Here is my .02 cents. I have both style vises. My Columbian is a D44. That one is a D45. I paid 40 for mine, in much better shape. These are workshop vises, medium duty. The Desmond is a machinest...

Re: The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Looks great! I never see rustoleum gray in stores either. I hate having to special order them. I still think the later boxes are a darker gray. I trying to do a touch up job also.

Re: The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

In my never ending search for vintage colored paints I've stumbled upon this, dark charcoal gray. My question is has anyone used as a match for 60-70's Craftsman gray? It seems to be between dark...
