My thoughts exactly. Was thinking it would be great to get the gear and worm machined out of metal, but the time and cost just doesn't make sense. At least it is an cheap and easy fix.

I turned an old kitchen cabinet into a light duty work table and it works out great (both for my work table needs and for storage).

3M windshield stuff is similar to the above and may be more readily available (I found a really good deal on Ebay a year or so ago). Lots of guys use it to seal vapor barriers on car doors.
