Re: Garage Organizational Racks!

Love the font of the drill station as well as the air tools. FWIW, I would have the air tools script bent up, just like the drill station. It seems to get lost, when tools are in place. Different...

Re: 5 Gal bucket handle mods

Drill holes in bucket and run rope with a double fishermen(prusik). Webbing would work also, but probably harder to carry though.

Re: Reed 204 r

It has a spilt ring that you need to back out with a drift. It is used to adjust backlash. There is a set screw on side too

Thanks, the craftsman has a covered screw and is beefer, but similar look. I'm wondering if Columbian made both these vises....

Re: Craftsman 5198 vise restore

The easiest way to get the badge off is to take a Dremel with cut off wheel and cut a slot in the drive rivets that hold it in place. Then simply back out the rivet with slotted screwdriver. Piece of...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Rock island, date stamped on top of beam near the stationary base. My guess is late 40's as mine is 1946. By the way, great price assuming no damage.

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

I know some of you 51xx owners have seen dates stamped on the slide. Where did they stamp the dates? I can't find one after looking closely.[/QUOTE]

Just below the Budweiser can on the slide....

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Ok, I think we are getting closer. I also have a Rock Island Craftsman with a 1946 date. Someone here probably knows what year the heritage logo first came to be.

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Mine. 5196 10/54. Badge.
I think badges were early to mid 50's, then switching over to raised lettering in later years....

Great score, check the top of the slide near the static jaw, it should be date stamped.

Re: Show us Your Vintage Bench Grinders!!!!

I removed drive rivets from my craftsman name plate by using a dremel w/ a cutoff wheel to make a slot, which can then be removed with a screwdriver. Learned that one from someone else here at GJ.

Re: Everything you need to know about bench vises...

In that instance the m with number after it refers to different generations of that model. The D series workshop vises originally had no number. Then as time went on and columbian vise company was...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Stumbled across this Reed 406 in an antique shop. On sale for $250. Too rich for my blood, needs some TLC also. The slide has some nicks plus possible mushrooming. It appears a small chip missing...

Rear portion of beam is broken off, no way that much money for a broken vise IMHO.

Wow, it looks like that vise is staying as it is on a bench instead of a stump. Looks great, good work by all.

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

It is made by Columbian. I would guess it was made in the 60's or later, it's hard to date Columbians since their overall style never really changed much. Wilton still makes them but only the high...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

You would be hard pressed to find better quality vise then that. Those vises have backlash adjustments, oil ports, and are tough as nails. IMHO, much better then overpriced Wilton's. 50 bucks was a...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Craftsman vises seem to be Rock Island, then Reed followed by Columbian. The 519x series are between Reed and Columbian era. The vise has the stout weight and oiling ports, which seem Reed like. The...

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Quick question about your spindle slop, do you have any movement of the main nut while rotating the handle? It seems that some of my vises suffer from slop from the main nut being torqued over the...
