yea whats with the lip, the one i have has an angled chunk on the underside. i dont like it at all haha

That lip or extension underneath centers the vise properly on the bench, also it will take stress off the mounting bolts, say if you were pounding on something from the front. Naturally the drawback is when the vise is laying around they don't sit properly. Its an important piece though.

well.. er.. 4 are bolted to benches .. & the other 13 just clutter up the place.. There are 5 or 6 of them on the bar.. which is no longer a bar.. another 4 next to the mitre saw.. so I have to move those to use it...

Ya get the idea..

If you have some you aren't attached to, take them to the next big swap meet and turn them into cash. Bring a friend, and make a day out of it... (I find the point of a swap meet isn't to go home with money, but to go home with more/different stuff!)

With a trailer full of vises, you'd quickly be known as The Vise guy and could possibly turn it into a hobby that actually makes some money.

I've lazily looked for a big vise for a couple years, and finally got one.
Then today I think I lucked out and found a big old Columbian vise for $25.

The first one is going to go on the fab bench I have been collecting parts for.
The second one is going on the vise table I built a few years ago that currently has a big Sams Club/Chinese vise on it.

Oooh sorry I didn't know what you were talking about. Yeah that was a while ago when I first got Behemoth. I posted it on here with little response at first so I tried over there to see if anybody knew anything. That was before the vise cult had really blossomed here.

Got this for free a couple months ago. Made by Jewel Mfg Co. in St Paul, Minnesota and is model No. 1. Seems to be pretty good quality. Maybe you all have seen plenty of these before, but I haven't. It looks like it would be really handy for welding or cutting pipes.

Yes I know it's a chain vise, but it's cool!

I think those old Reeds were really dense. They are heavier then they appear. My 3" combo weighs over 50 lbs! That one has to go 60+ lbs. You've really got a nice one.

Just put it on the scale, 80+ lbs.!

Just have to wonder what the original color was? O what would look good on it.

After seeing some of the restorations on this website I was inspired! Here's a couple "after" pictures.

Did a bit more on my Paramo today. When I first went throught it I didn't straighten the handle or clean it up... So today I puled the screw, put it in the press to straighten it & then beadblasted & wire wheeled the handle...

Here's how it looked before:

That 2C Reed is a tough vise. I used mine for a press the other day to install a wheel bearing and today for heavy bushings. Three feet of pipe and my 270 pound self on the handle and they went right in. If it had been an import I would have been digging out one of the back-ups. If you close the jaws and use the top, not the square slide, it also makes a fair anvil. The 2C has a 3/4" handle so you know it's built for abuse.

Oh nice people of Garage Journal, Please help a sister out!!!

I lost my Daddy this past January. My Mom is trying to deal with his tools and things. Dad did lots of woodworking and such. None of the kids do any, and we hate to see the tools just sit and rust. He would want them to be used. So we've let friends come in and buy some of his saws and things. It's hard. Very emotional.

He has this old bench vise that we weren't planning on selling, but we've had several people ask about it and my Mom and I certainly don't know what to do with it.

We aren't sure if we want to sell it or not, but even if we did want to, we have no idea what it may be worth or what it's story may be. I have done some research on the internet, and I have determined that it could be worth anywhere from $30 to $695. HA! That is not helpful.

I'm sure this vise came from my great grandfather's farm. I don't know the story. Can you PLEASE help me with this dilemma?

I would REALLY appreciate any info you can give me!!

I can't get the pictures to import - there are pics at www.thecolloquialtimes.blogspot.com

That is a nice old Parker, I'd say it is worth about $100 or so in that condition. Where are you located?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure your dad would feel honored you are taking the time to make sure his tools are not offloaded to the first guy to come along.

We are in south Mississippi. So, it's not in good shape? I'm curious now. I wish I could really find out where this thing came from.

Thats a nice vise however most Parkers I know came with their Parker style jaws. This vise appears to either have an "add on" jaw or "T" style on the left, and I might be wrong but it appears that its missing the right jaw and it was being used without one. I've got old tired eyes and maybe I'm wrong but if I'm not, I'm afraid to say it will cost a buyer alot of time to bring that ol girl back usable or restorable condition.

Sounds about right. I was wondering about the jaw style. Could be a fun resto. I'd have to knock down my previously outlined value. It does indeed look as it the jaw ha been removed, and the bare iron used to hold work.

OK well thank you guys for the info!! I appreciate it. We will probably keep it - I have no idea for what, but it's pretty cool looking and has definitely been a conversation starter!

#1 is a 3" Chas Parker off CL for $10
#2 is a 4" Littlestown from a Pawn for $15. (missing 1 jaw?)
#3 is a 6" Hollands #16 from CL for $140 on a concrete filled stand

ok, you **** for the Parker....

As for the Littlestown: Left an identical one at a flea market a few weeks back for the same price. It had both jaws, but one had a sheared off screw & he wouldn't even drop the price by $1... even tho I'd just bought a Columbian off him for the same price that was perfect.
