Default How to test a 24V dc motor?

I need to test two 24V dc motors from a electric clarklift.
Each motor has a A1, A2, S1, S2 post. I tried searching the model EM15S for some motor specs, but didn't find anything. Motor has a number AN1829M, Thanks.

We have the same type of motors in wind turbines. I would just ohm the windings. Ive hooked them up in the shop before but cant remember if u need the field (s1 s2) to be backwards to a1 & 2. I probably did it wrong the first time and it didnt hurt anything. So you can try a1 & s1 together on positive then the others on negative. (2 car batteries in series) Just bump it, dont hold it on there with no fuse also use very big wire (min prolly #2 awg) I didnt look up your motor so may need bigger wire or just wire it up for 36volts to lower amperage.

Put 12-24 Volts Across A1 & A2
Put 24V or what ever it says across S1 & S2.
Polarity should not matter, but you will not know which way it will rotate
until you run it.
Also make sure that S1 & S2 always has some voltage on it
or bad things will happen. Like the armature drawing way more amps and
spinning so fast that it throws its self into pieces.
Especially with no load hooked to it.
Is it a shunt wound, or compound wound motor?
What do you plan to do with motor any how?

You should check them for continuity first.
S1-S2 should have continuity
A1-A2 should have continuity
A1/A2+S1/S2 should not have continuity to the outside case, if any it should be very low.
If everything checks ok, the motor can be powered up.
Also check your brush's for not being stuck in the holders-try pulling on them.
Visually inspect the commutator for burns from the brush's with the brush cover removed.

Both what I said except im using the same voltage on the field, and I should of given you specifics on how to ohm a motor. Sorry was in a hurry.

Thanks for the responses. I had two on ebay but didn't get the chance to test them. Buyer wanted to know if they ran.

Just a word of advice, never ever sell something on eBay if you don't know its condition. Otherwise a buyer will assume they are working, and when/if they don't they'll go after you.

This has happened to sellers over and over--know exactly what condition your items are in, and describe them accurately. Saying "as-is" or "unknown condition" is meaningless on eBay...

I listed them as cores, so I felt ok about it. Had I been able to test them, I had a buyer. Sometimes my real job gets in the way.

Real job, you got one of those?

I understand, I've seen people buy stuff that is clearly marked as broken, as-is, whatever, then expect a working item in good condition. Sadly eBay usually sides with them when they either don't read the listing text (most buyers don't) or miss the important bits.
