Re: what did you do in your garage today?
Got he oil pan back on the tractor that went swimming during Tropical Storm Irene. I have been picking away at it for two months now, but the end is in sight.
I drained everything as soon as the water went down and I could get to it. Pulled the plugs and poured oil in the cylinders, turned the engine over to make sure it wouldn't seize. Then, dropped the pan, removed the starter, generator, carburetor, opened up the dash panel, and started cleaning. every opening was packed with silt, the bigger holes were stuffed with twigs, bits of grass, and cornstalks. I hope to get the fluids filled back up tomorrow and try to start it. After that I still need to repack the wheel bearings, and open up the steering gear and clean it out.
The radiator is over full, it's a non pressurized system and the cap let flood water in, it tests to 25 degrees, but I want to warm the engine up and get everything mixed, test it again before I just drain it. If there is only a couple quarts of flood water floating on top it may be OK.
Once I get this done I need to move in my plow truck and weld the frame, re-install the gas tanks and bed, and get ready to plow snow. Once that is done there is another flooded tractor to deal with, and one that just broke its crankshaft for no apparent reason.
