Looking for ideas for a sound system for my shop. I like to have music playing while I work, so I figure I would use ceiling mount speakers and possibly in the outside soffit.

Good question. I've been wondering the same thing about the garage i'm planning. I have an A/V reciever and TV leftover from a living room remodel that I saved to put in the garage. Figured I'd get a wall mount for the TV and use the receiver to play music or sound from the TV. I'm leaning towards ceiling mounted speakers also. Looked at what they had at circuit city last time I was there, and while they were nice, they were too pricey for what I'm doing. Don't think I really need home theater grade stuff in the garage. Figured I might try Radio Shack. Would like to just get some of those round flush mounts like you see in retail stores.

Also wondering about placement. I'm gonna have a 28 x 36 and figured I'd install 4 in the ceiling in an evenly spaced rectangle. But wondering about echoing and sound quality????

I also thought about bracket mounted ones in each corner, but like the clean look of the ceiling mounted ones. Also considered marine speakers (like car speakers but white), but not really crazy about that idea either. I'll be curious to see what others have done.

I just have a Dewalt radio. Nothing fancy, but it works for me.

Old radio left by a girlfriend. Paint and glue spatterred, but it produces sound.

Good enough for now.

Now, when I get the power in the building, I might do some serious thinking about sound systems.

I spend most of my free time in my garage and I like my music and sometimes I like it loud! So, I put in a system similar to what a health club might have. I have 4 bracket mounted speakers and a subwoofer matched to a 1200 watt amp. The inputs from ipod, cd, tuner or TV goes through a receiver to the amp and then to the speakers.

The speakers are 150 watt waterproof speakers to deal with the garage environment. I got the speakers from outdoorspeakers.com. Much cheaper and better than Bose or Infinity. I highly recommend them. If you have any questions please ask. My whole system cost me +/- $800. Cheap compared to some of the other equipment in the garage!

Bookshelf style stereo with 3 disc CD changer. I thought about wiring the garage for sound but this is a starter home for us. I wouldn't get enough use out of it to justify the investment to myself let alone my wife. Instead, we're concentrating on improvements that will really improve the value of the house the most. This year's project is a 13'x24' paver patio with seating wall.

I'm cheap. I just roll down the windows in the car & crank up the CD player or radio. I intend to do better some day but it's not a high priority.

I have a question someone might know if they have installed home audio systems.

I already have cut outs on the ceiling but no speakers, I have attic access but my attic shares a wall with the neighbor.. I think one end of my attic wall is shared with the neighbor's upstairs.. if I get some in ceiling speakers how much noise does it make in the attic space would it annoy the neighbor?

For my 2 car garage, I purchased 2 sets (4 speakers) of Phoenix Gold ATC-6 6 1/2" 200 watt in ceiling speakers. I have not yet installed them, but they are highly recommended. I purchased them from buy.com. They cost $132.00 for the 2 sets of speakers.

What....no one has the Bose wireless surround sound in their garage?????

Sounds like my setup. I usually have an FM clock radio on the side I am hardly on going 24/7. On the other side I seem to always have the TV on and hardly ever listen to the radio. If I am working in the yard the radio is always blasting away though. Usually on the wife XM satellite radio either on the 70' or the 80' station

Like others, my garage 'inherited' items from the house when we remodeled to all the new HD stuff. Sony 650 watt 4 channel stereo and a 53" rear projection TV, and yes, the BOSE surround sound (but not wireless). Moved the whole 'stack' stereo system outside, cd,dvd, cassette, phonograph (YES, I still own some!) and powered subwoofer. Already had satellite tv, internet and phone. It's nice, because I can listen to races, tv shows or music while working. Can be loud enough to fill the building easily.

My wife just got me a Sony "bookself" system with remote and a CD player for Christmas. It's got a hook up for a MP3 player but thats more tech advanced than I am. It replaced a old $15 garage sale stereo I bought about 15 years ago.

Mordi...How long ago did you buy those speakers? They are selling on buy.com for $34.99 a pair. Did you add an extra 1 to your price you posted or did you buy four "pairs" of speakers?

A pair come in each purchase:

I have an older sony reciever and a Cerwin-vega surround system I got open box from Best Buy a while back. Sources are either sattv, XM, or PC. Loud enough to hear over the compressor (60 gal single stage in a 24x24 finished garage) and satisfactory SQ for what I am doing out there. I am only using a pair of speakers and the sub currently, but am wired for surround if I need it down the road (reciever's surround outputs are hosed). Speakers are located in the corners and the sub is on a shelf near the center of the back wall.

A friend of mine was getting rid of some old stereo stuff and gave me his old Pioneer Elite receiver plus an Akai DVD/CD player. For speakers, I just went to eBay and got a pairof nice Klipsh's and just recently got my B&W sub. I can hang out in my shop all day now.

I just finished wiring in wall for speakers/cable/phone and Sirius Satellite.
I've got a sony 5.1 tuner, cd changer that will be going in the garage and will be purchasing a flat screen tv at some point. For speakers I've got some nice Cerwin Vega 10" cabinets along with an older pair of bookshelf speakers. Should be pretty nice when it's all done. I should have pretty good sound reproduction anywhere in the garage with the 4 speakers. The TV will be piped into the surround sound as well.
I'll post up some pics later for sure.

I have an old jukebox full of 50's-80's rock, am/fm/8-track stereo system, and a am/fm radio shaped like a parking meter. You can see part of the jukebox on the left and the stereo up top.

I have a couple of Electrovoice full-range drivers in corner cabinets, connected to whatever of my tube junk is in current rotation. I have a Scott 222C tube amp and a junky Yamaha CD player (needs a belt, but loads with a little help) in place now. Probably swap in one of a dozen or so tube receivers I have on hand ... I want radio. There are several good FM college stations in Boston (WMBR - 72 watts!)

I've got the computer with the mp3's hooked into a hand me down reciever from a buddy. Got the directv hooked up thru it also. If you look up high you will see the 15" subs that a buddy donated. They just got stuck above the ******* for now, I'll find a better place for them later. I also have some satellite speakers on the walls out to the sides. Works well for free....

Also got the cabinet for free also.. old internet provider had their equipment in there and left behind the cabinet, so I put it to work.

I also have some old car subs that I'm gonna hook up to a spare car amp I have laying around. Too many projects not enough time though.

I really like the cabinet to protect the electronics. I need to find one!

Yea I have no idea where you would find one for sure.

It is designed for electronics and such cause the stereo fits perfectly. The front opens, and it also hinges open close to the back so that you can get the the back of the stereo to hook up wires and stuff.... very handy.

It used to have a fan in one side of it. They removed the fan when they took their equipment out. Before summer I'm gonna have to find a little fan to mount in the hole. The other side has a little foam filter where it can **** air in.
