Default Trimming your dogs nails?

What method do you use, let the dog groomer do them, dremel with drum sanding band, clippers?

What works best for your dog?

If you use a dremel, what grit drum do you use, RPM?

Thanks

Use the clippers, anything with a motor will scare the dogs. I take the blue dog to the groomers every 2 months, they bath, trim his nails, clean his ears and do the but sack thing, $35.00, well worth it. Except they always put a dam bow on his collar. He is a cattle dog, cattle dogs do not get bow's.

Cordless dremel, with the sanding drum. Quickest, and as you get closer to the quick, you can tell. If you happen to go a bit to far, it cauterizes it.

Grit, the standard grit, that you get dremel refills for.....I think its about 80 Grit. The cordless dremel only has two speeds, low and high, I use high.

I have a 9 year old Border Collie, a 4 year old Border collie, and a 9 month BC/whippet mix. By starting the dremel around them for a day or two, they got used to the noise very quickly. (it not loud, just a new noise) None of them mind. Hell the 9 year old goes to sleep.....

Ha! When I used to take my wolves to the groomers they always came home with badass bandanas. Guess it depends on how mean ya pup looks

I have a purebred shephered and shepherds have this thing about people touching their paws and tries to bite anyone touching them. Vet has to put him out to trim them for us.

Vet does them. Takes 3 people to hold dogs down and 1 to clip nails. You can touch their feet all day without a problem, get the nail trimmers out and the fight is on. The Dremel is the worst, as soon as they hear the "sound" they know what's up. Four people for one dog = $20.00

We took our dogs to a groomer. The baths and drying went well. The "Blueberry Facial" not so much. The groomers had blueberry scented wipes, that they would wipe down the dogs faces with. Started wiping down our dogs and they no longer had the wipe. The dog ate it. It was priceless when I asked if he just ate his blueberry facial and the groomers facial expression.

You all seem to have missed the easiest method of all. No muss, no fuss. I take my Rottie for a 3/4-1 mile walk every morning on the road/street. Natural wear on the road/street keeps them trimmed to about 1/4". It isn't necessary to walk that far, 1/4 mile or less every other day or so will do it. Either that or put a small patio of patio block or whatever in an outside area/pen the dog is restricted to and will walk/play on.

I have two Huskies and that works nicely for the back feet, but they don't put as much weight on their front which necessitates trimming. I vary between having the vet, myself or the groomer do it. The vet showed me how, but if the dog fusses they told me to stop and try again later.

I have a jack Russell that I walk. His nails just seem to grind down from trying to pull me.

My wife uses clippers, I am in charge of holding the dogs still. BTW - wear safety glasses, those clippers turn the nail ends into little projectiles!

Used to use clippers on all my other labs. This one bites his nails and they never get long...never seen a dog do that before

My dog and I hate trimming nails.

I use nail clippers if/when I do them. The wife holds the dog. Dog doesn't jump, but she is super stressed (won't even lick a spoonful of peanut butter during the process).

I prefer to take her out into the street and throw the ball a few times in hopes the pavement will file those suckers down.

You have to start clipping them when they are a pup..my bulldogs just lift a paw and I cut em..I dont think they would sit still with the Dremel...motors tend to freak them out.

I have been doing my dog's nails for years with a corded Dremel tool on #1 switch setting with a #120 grit sanding drum. One advantage to using a Dremel is that you won't split the nail which is common when clipping them.

I take him for regular walks and jogs. The nails get worn down naturally, especially on the cement sidewalk. But we keep those dog nail clippers in the house. It's easier just to take him out for exercise.

My dog 'busts the myth' that a sidewalk will keep nails trimmed. Her nails grow too fast. Especially the fronts. I use dog nail clippers. I also have a Milk Bone waiting (it's like crack for my dog) which makes nail trimming a positive experience. When I get the clippers out she runs over and plants her butt on the floor and lifts her front paw.

when you clip them they are left sharp, grind them with a coarse grit drum on a dremel. My wife is a dog groomer snd that's what she does. She doesn't have a dremel she has a "nail grinder" which is basically a name for an overpriced dremel. It's the same thing. If you are worried about getting your face chomped off,get a muzzle (for the dog)

Our rott/lab mix hates having his feet touched, so clipping was always a battle. Then one day after an hour-long hike in the woods, my wife laid him down, wiped the mud off his feet and proceeded to clip his nails. He was too tired to care, and it became part of his weekend hiking ritual. (we use one of those plier-type clippers that has a built-in depth stop).
