I think your leaving out some info maybe? Does that include forming, base layer and everything? You are at 50 yards of concrete ($5,000) plus labor, plus prep work, plus foam board and other materials. Get a second quote and see how close they are. Good concrete guys are worth every penny!!

This guy does great work from what I have heard. The forming is the building. Its a pole building. 14,000 for the concrete and mesh work. The rest is for foam board

My 2100 sq ft driveway came in at about $10K including tear out, and custom scoring.

No Foam board, 1/2" rebar, 5+" think.

17k minus the 3 grand for foam comes to 14,000. Take off another 5k for concrete (100/yd) and another 350 if tax gets thrown in on the concrete takes it down to 8650. Now figure the coast of wire/rebar. That moves the cost down to 8 grand give or take.

Since that's a 50x60 slab (approx) do they need any extra equipment, skid steer to haul the concrete or a pump truck ? That'll take a little extra cost too.

Once you get the second bid in, maybe it'll put things in perspective.

Sometimes it's worth it to pay a little extra for concrete work. You don't want some hack pouring it for you, it's permanent, unless of course you want to bust it back out.

See where the second estimate falls. :beer:

Location is very relevant, but I got quoted $1.60/sq. ft. just to place and finish. That's with me doing all the prep work.

So for your floor, just dumping the 'crete and smoothing it would cost me $4800.

Say $20/sheet for foam = $3780 + tax

My last quote for 32mpa was $160/yd x 50 yards = $8000

To get your floor done here, I'm already at $16,500 and I haven't calculated re-bar (and don't be using mesh. . .) and the labor for tying that up and placing the foam.

I'd be really lucky to come in under $20,000 on that pour here in Alberta. . .

Id agree that good flat work will be "paid" for. Ive got a 4 car garage, and 3500 sqft tin building, the flat work is so poor, it looks like they went down to the local grade school, got some 3rd graders, and put them to work.

I would seriously believe they must have been "hammered" to perform such poor work, I dont even know how you could screw it up so bad.

The "crests" are so high, it cant even be cut with a grinder, I bet some of them are 3/8" of an inch, they are so high you trip over them.

I bought the place this way, my only option is to poor over, because its not level either.

You're probably paying an extra prmium for that Dave, maybe the contractor is bring in a couple of extra guys that specialize in concrete finishing . . .not just typical power trowel finish.



BTW, what type of chassises ? round track/mud or drag race/autocross ?

$5.60 a SF may not be that bad. How much fill needs to be brought in? What size rebar? What is the spacing of the rebar? Any beams around the edges/center ? probaly not if its inside the pole barn. If you get a second quote make sure it is the same specs as the first.

Drag chassis and street rod. Muscle car. Whatever I need to put on it. Haven't done any Autocross work yet. He said it would have a finish like menards or stores like that. I just have to seal it. Fill is seperate.

5.62 sq/ft is excellent for that kind of work, turn key. The driveway next door - 4" flatwork, nothing extra, was $4.50 sq/ft and only because the contractor did the house foundation too. That house was 92 yards and they had 10 guys on the work. I paid 4.50 sq/ft for reasonably flat, level and square and got only part of the "level" requirement.

Right now the spare 302. It did have a nice 500HP 351C, but the motor ate the crank and the block went to hell after two seasons. I saved the heads, etc from that 351C and will stuff that in the wife's 70 Mustang 351C. That should put her in the 7.20s or better 1/8 mile.

I was hoping for a flat floor for the same reason you want - when doing chassis work, it's nice to be blocking up on a good known surface. Apparently, one of the guys or one of the trucks hit one corner of the forms and I have about a 3" slope corner to corner in one direction. It's way more pronounced in the work room than the main area, but it's there. We also had a truck show up late, so there is a bit of a wave between the first load and the second. It's a good solid slab with footers and beams, plus it's the best shop I've ever had, so I can deal and it's no problem.

The last shop I had was a 20x24 and they did get it flat and level. They power troweled it so much that when wet it was a slip-n-slide. It was great - until the slab cracked diagonal about 5 years later. Minimal steel and no beams or footers. The new one may not be flat and smooth, but it ain't a gonna crack or move.

Hire the best you can afford, but don't be afraid to walk out there with a level to check the forms and a big tape measure to check the diagonals.

Haven't seen $100 in a few years. $5.50-$6.00/sq ft is pretty reasonable for general concrete work in my area, for what you're looking for, it's excellent if the guy is as good as his reputation. I'd be more leary of getting a quote substantially lower since we all know you get what you pay for. I'm building a pool house right now for a customer and he got a discount for his concrete work (approx 2400 sq/ft of exposed aggregate) if he pays cash. The initial price is $11.00/sq ft, formed, placed & finished and the discount got him to $8.50. Again, I think you're doing well with a contractor you feel comfortable with and the foam board.

Definitely want it flat. Have to lay out my anchoring points for bender. I have a 351 Cleveland cobra jet. Building a 588 BBF for my 70 f100.

I paid approximately $4.30 sqft for 4" 4500psi w/rebar, and 2" base material last fall for my building. I don't think that's to bad if he does quality work.

Hmm.. I might need some chassis work done on my Lightning, and your right down the road(I'm in the Quad Cities)... Trucks getting a blown 598... 8.50's are the goal.

I think based on the fact that "Tim Kennedy" must live in an area where everything is cheaper. . .and has failed to realize the ignorance of his post.

Like I said, I'd kill to be able to get all that done in my garage for $17,000 and I'm not even over 1000 sq.ft. There is a reason I'm doing all this myself. When a complete useless labor monkey is worth $20 - $25/hour, contractors tend to charge big for work up here. . .

You're getting a better deal than I can find. I'm at around 2200 SF at $7+/SF whereas you are sitting at around $5.62/SF. I actually have two different sites so that's adding to the cost as well as doing full footer/stem/floating slab vs. monolithic. Lots of steel. I would gladly pay the $5.62/SF!

My local vendor pricing June/July 2011 was $88/yd delivered to the site. May be different now, but likely still under $100.
