I bought an 8" Jet at the Mexican flea market recently. I offered $50.00 for it, and he had to think a long time before he said yes. Mine looks like new and works perfectly.

That said, it had no stand. This stand is worth more than the grinder, in my opinion. I would start at $100 and take my lumps up to $125.

That's a NICE stand. I'd go $75, but I'm a cheap *******.
It's probably worth $125.

Does he also have the eye shields? If so I'd go $100. Those 8" Jet's are very powerful grinders.

boy you guys must be made of money. jet is a decent (not great) taiwan grinder. the stand is valuable only if you want to keep it on a stand (dedicating the sq ft of floor space needed for it)
IMO I wouldnt give $75 for it.

:+1:

I have too many tools that "require" a stand to bench to mount them. my solution is a B&D WorkMate and a common sized "mounting plate" and I rack the tools in a "book case". I only need them up when I'm using them; the rest of the time both the WM and the tool is racked/shelved.

If it's in good working order & he has everything for it, $150 is a good price but try to get it on the cheap none the less. Cleaned up & repainted it will look 10 times better.

JET of this vintage could be American made. I'm not sure when they started overseas production on 110v bench grinders, but Ihave seen some older industrial JET grinders that were made in the USA.

well i got it for $100. all i was really after was the stand, so i may sell the grinder. it works great. it's a 3/4hp made in tiawan. made in '79.

Good find. I'd think twice about selling the grinder. The Taiwan Jet's are excellent and I doubt you'll find a more powerful 8" grinder.

Don't sell off the Jet until you have compared it to the Craftsman by hogging into a big piece of steel. These old Jets are very powerful. Craftsman's HP ratings seem to have been determined by the sales department, not an independent lab.

Maybe the newer ones; the older block grinders are not bad at all. Not Baldor or Wissota level, but they are good grinders.

The craftsman would have to be 95.4% efficient at its rated wattage to be 1 full HP. The Jet would have to be 69.5% efficient at its rated wattage to be a full 3/4 HP. 80% efficiency is a general rule for newer motors that size so it's easy to tell who's being honest.

(Volts x Amps x .8) / 745.7 = HP

You should keep that second grinder, and mount a pair of wire wheels on it--one medium (or fine, you're choice), and a twisted wire wheel. I've got a pair of bench grinders on a custom frame I made for my stand--the grinders are stacked. The lower grinder is 5 inches forward of the upper. The lower has a stone on once arbor, and a Multi Tool belt and disk grinder on the other. The upper grinder has a fine and medium wire wheel on the arbors.
Two grinders, one small foot print, and they're the most-used tools in my shop.

If that stand had the to water holding pots it would cost you $250 to buy new. The grinder is worth $50 with ease. They are over $200 for one like that.

I have gotten $150 out of grinders like that. It is not a steal but at $100 it is a good price. It is an older early Jet grinder and they have gotten much better through the years.
If that is a 10 inch grinder look up the price and you will be shocke. My bet is that if you want it new it will be around $500 with the stand.
