I have been perusing the site getting lots of ideas and now I am ready to build a building on my property to store my toy hauler and truck along with a bunch of spare car parts and lawn equipment.

I will update this thread with pictures as progress continues.

Details:
Size: 36' x 80'
Construction: post frame
Flooring: eventually concrete but structure fill for now.
Roof: Composite shingles
Roof Pitch: 5/12 w/ 24" overhangs all around.
Doors: 3 - 14' x 14' overhead doors, 1 man door
Windows: 6 - transom windows, 1 slider

Below is the site of the building. We have already done some dirt work to level the pad. There was about a three foot drop in elevation from the rear of the building location to the front. The pile of dirt in the middle of the site is the structure fill that will be spread out once the building is up.

Sorry for the delay in posting. My posts required approval by the moderator for some reason.

Anyway, When digging the holes we found a gas line and drilled right through it. We had a locate done prior and this line didn't show up. Turns out it was an abandoned gas line that the gas company evidently didn't know about.

Made lots of progress this week. The weather is really holding out for us for it being December in Northern Colorado.

Installation of the girts along each side. The front of the shed will have two 14 x 14 garage doors.

Took delivery of the trusses. They are very long (36'). It will be too hard to hoist them by hand. We are going to build "truss packs" and crane them in groups of 8. In the next pic you can see them on the ground next to the building.

View media item 26507
Got the gabled ends installed and have the truss packs ready to be hoisted by the crane. Cranes are expensive to hire so pre-building the truss packs saves crane time because the crane operator doesn't have to wait for each truss to be placed. With this many trusses it makes a difference. I am going to record the crane process. I think it would be cool to show a time lapse of it.

Added diagonal braces on the walls and building out the overhangs. This is the rear of the building. One 14 x 14' door on this wall will create a drive through situation.

No. We inspected it and the mending plates were not damaged. The damage was only on the tail portion of the board. The horizontal board was not damaged. We will nail boards to the broken ones to extend the tail back out.

Lots of action going on. Installed the sub fascia all the way around, finished the roof sheathing and the roofer came out and papered it. While that was going on we dug a 30" deep trench around the perimeter of the building to pour a concrete footer for frost protection.

The concrete truck arrived on schedule and we began pouring. I got so busy with that I didn't even take pictures. Next thing I know the Bobcat guy started spreading out the structure fill and covered up the footer, so no pics of that. Sorry.

Meanwhile we took delivery of more lumber and the siding.

Started setting the beams and roof for the side porch. The porch will match the architecture of the house and deck.

While trenching the footer we trenched for a conduit between the house and building. I will use this trench for phone/Internet/intercom expansion currently installed in the house.

Progress report:

Started installing the siding. The siding is only 8' long so it will take a couple of rows. Got the first row done.

Also framed out the overhead doors and windows and installed the microlam under the trusses on each side of the building.

Unfortunately we had to cut through one of the diagonal braces to install the window. The windows were planned to be higher but I changed my mind and lowered them. There is another diagonal brace on this wall so it probably won't matter much.

I got the wires run through the conduit so I can now bury the trench.

Got the siding on the rest of the building. Still need to nail it off and there is a little bit to do under the porch area but the largest part is done. Next steps include finishing the porch area, installing the trim, caulking and getting ready for paint. It is suppose to snow so I'm sure that will put a damper on things for a few days.

Well, it snowed but not before getting the first coat of primer on the building. Also got the rough cedar wood door frames and porch beams stained.

The garage door installers got the back door hung but ran into problems on the front doors. The door frames are not square and true. We realized it once the door sections started going up. The frames will need to be torn apart and redone.

The front doors aren't the proper style either so back to the drawing board... Sigh.

Luckily the back door was right so at least something went right today.

Great build! I'm real close to pulling the trigger on a similar building.
Is your roof pitch 4/12 with 24" overhang all around?
Thanks.

Looks good. What part of Northern CO are you in? I think the wind has been worse than the snow this week. Hopefully the weather will be good this weekend for you.

Windsor, Co area. The wind has been a bigger challenge than the snow. At one point during the build before the trusses were secured the wind actually blew the walls crooked in the middle of the structure. We had to straighten each post again before securing the roof. Even now, I don't think the walls are perfectly straight because of it.

Never Stop Improving.

That's the motto of this build. Made progress on the porch roof and got the first coat of paint on. Still need to finish the siding under the porch, the facia and the beams. We will start painting the eves and soffits today when it warms up.

Garage door guy says the doors are correct for what was ordered. Somehow what was ordered and what I wanted are not the same. He is going to see what can be done to fix the situation but it won't be until after the holiday. So no garage doors yet.

I like the porch over the man door also. I'll have to think about that when I get to work on mine. Still in the process of unpacking - can't wait to start working on the shop.

Those ground-built truss packs are the greatest thing I have seen yet for new construction. 36 x 80 "storage shed." Cracks me up. Here that would be an entire multi unit apartment house. Storage sheds in my part of the woods are 8 x 10. ;)

I don't know what else to call it at this point because its main purpose right now is for storage. Once I finish the inside I will have to call it something else.:dunno:

Finished the porch roof and beams. I finally got to install my homeade beam brackets that I made long before the construction began.

Also sprayed the first coat of trim paint on before the weather turned cold. At least now the roofers can start on the roof as we will paint the second coat with rollers. We will paint the porch roof by hand also as not to get over spray on the exposed beams.

I really like the style of your barn. The porch looks awesome too, I love exposed beams. Keep up the good work with your small shed :D

Well the cold weather has put a damper on the painting and roofing for a while so I decided to finish the siding under the porch.

This presented an interesting challenge getting the grooves in the siding to line up while cutting the roof angles and cutting around the beams. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.

There is a power pole not more than 25 feet from the building so I inquired to the power company about pulling power from there instead of connecting to the house which is a couple hundred feet away. They said that they could put a separate metered service to the building from the power pole.

As an added bonus, they are offering a new construction credit which more than covers the cost to run the service so I am basically getting free hookup.

I installed the service panel and breakers. I am trying to decide how I might finish the interior walls some day so that I get the proper spacing from the exterior wall on the breaker panel. I decided for now that I am going run 2x4 stringers along the posts on the inside and hang drywall on those. I know some people have put interior wall finish and foam board right on the inside of the girts but I want more R-value insulation depth.

Switch boxes near the man door. I am planning on having lots of lighting options so I went ahead and installed two switch boxes.

Wow, I missed this thread. Sweet shop you've built, very impressive. I thnk the porch really sets the whole shop off.

Nice looking cars as well. My cousin has been running a rail the past two seasons at Bristol and has enjoied the switch. His kids (13 & 16) run the junior rails. 13yo has won his class the last 2 yrs. He always cuts a better light than his dad.

Wow, now THAT's a storage shed for toys!! Sorry to see the wrecked classic drag car.

Love the building design and exterior covering, along with drive-thru feature, coupled with HUGE doors.

Have to ask though why is concrete frost footing being added later, after the walls have been built all the way down to ground? Won't you be exposed to termite damage since wood is right down at ground level?

The frost protection was done after the post were set because if had done it first, we would not have been able drill the holes. The frost footer is only 4-6 inches wide, 30 inches deep and is intended to keep frost from migrating under the slab from outside the building. It provides no structural integrity whatsoever. I could have installed foam board instead but the concrete seemed easier. Trying to backfill the foam board in a narrow trench is tough (so I'm told).

The posts and the bottom board are pressure treated lumber. They are made to last for decades under ground or at dirt level. I am not sure if they are impervious to termites but we don't have a termite problem typically where I live.
