I must be... :lol_hitti

I don't know what it is but I can't seem to stop buying punches and chisels. I usually pick them up for about $1 and I actually use them all the time for various tasks around the shop. Anyone else have this affliction?

You don't fucken use them by the looks of your hammer. I have that same hammer and it lost its paint in about 6 hours of light use.

Wow, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today?

I have a bunch of hammers that I use with my punches. I keep that hammer in the drawer to make sure that I also have one handy and it doesn't see much use. ;)

Yep, at a buck a piece it's hard to keep from buying more...

I don't go out of my way to buy punches anymore unless they are old Plvmb, Proto or other rarer top end brands for cheap. (Or craftsman as spars for my original =V= series punches, since I have a few that broke and the "replacement" punches while still USA, were un-plated... but again, they have to be cheaper than dirt...) I have two 1/3 width drawers FULL of misc beaters that I modify as needed. Most of the recent punch acquisitions are from boxes of tools that the punches were just "there"...

What's with swearing at another member like that? That was uncalled for.

I don't have any problems with punches and chisels, but recently, I been having trouble buying up wrench sets I don't need.

If you pick them up for $1 second hand, would you be willing to pay $2 new?

I just got 5pc sets of pin punches and chisels from HJE for Wilde Wednesday, and these Wilde punches and chisels are the best value I've ever seen.

They were about $12 per 5pc set.

My drilling hammer looks newer than that ball peen, and I use the hell out of it.

I started my career working in cleanrooms, where being a tool polisher was part of the job description.

When I work, I don't toss my tools down on the ground, I don't drag them across concrete, I don't use random surfaces of my tools as blunt objects, and they get wiped shiny clean after every use.

I'm not saying my way is right/wrong or better/worse, but I've been accused of being a "tool polisher" or "armchair quarterback" solely because of how much care I take with my tools.

I envy the OP for all his punches. No matter how many I buy, I can always do something that makes me wish for a longer...different size....taper... or material (brass...etc) type of punch. They are sort of like Pullers...the right one makes a job so much easier but most of the time we just "adapt" and keep going.

Oh, man, I'm relieved to hear it was just a misunderstanding. No harm, no foul, and thanks for clearing the air.

I really like the strategy this thread has made me aware of. I have been doing this without realizing it, but I purchased my first SET of SO punches about 6 years ago. I have just slowly been adding to the original set when I find them for reasonable prices. Punches and chisels are one thing that you can save a ton of money on by buying good quality lightly used individuals instead of sets.

I have a decent amount of punches in the drawer. Some Dasco, some from Harry Epstein, and some older ones from garage sales. I just bought a 1/16 roll pin punch from Epstein's that I will use for taking apart locks.

Files are another biggie... you can find whole tables full of them at swap meets, sometimes in new or near new condition.

My problem is I still need a set for he ease of knowing I have just the right size in the right order then I use the loose ones to preserve the set. Just a little OCD I guess.

I like Dasco too. I have Dasco, Starrett, Rennsteig, a bunch of punches from my grandpa who did maintenance at the Geneva steel plant, and I have some Wilde roll pin punches coming from HJE.

If you ever junk a truck the differential pin can be made into a good punch and the super thick, flat leafs on the bottom of the leaf spring packs can make several nice chisels.

You can snag some pretty crazy deals on Amazon for files... I got a Pferd (german made) 14" coarse half round for $2.38 w/free shipping. It can be pretty hard to get quality large files for cheap.

I also got an 8" Pferd Corinox swiss pattern (special for stainless steel) for just over $4, they're usually $40-50 a piece. :shocking:

I got two brand new Simonds for around $2-3 each w/free ship as well.

Dasco ? I bought one while back first time i ever even heard of them. Lol. My dad gave me a old keen cutter punch. Wonder if its any good ??

Dasco seem to be pretty reasonable... the finish quality is a bit rough, but I feel the performance and price match fairly well.
