Laying Tile On Painted Garage Floor

Seven years ago I painted my garage floor with garage floor paint from homedepot. 1-Step epoxy I believe it was called.

It is now very rough. I want to tile the garage floor. I do not want the tile to be only affixed to the paint because then if the paint comes up then so would the tile. And the paint is coming up as shown in the attachment.

What is the best, easiest, quickest, way to prep the concrete for tile?

You are right, you definitely want to get that paint up. Here is an article that covers grinding a floor for epoxy. You can use the same machine for floor paint as well. It explains how you can use the diamabrush and a floor buffing machine. They have brushes for removing paint and all kinds of materials from your concrete. It works fairly fast and is not that expensive to rent.

I was inquiring last fall at Sunbelt Rentals if they has anything fairly simple to remove paint from a garage floor. They have a machine that uses carbide inserts. It looks like your basic floor polisher only more heavy duty. $75 for 24 hour rental. When ever it starts getting nice out I'll be giving it a go.

At your recommendation I called Sunbelt Rentals in Ocala FL. Their web page here indicates the machine rents for $94.

But wait, there is more cost involved. There is an additional charge of $100 for the carbide disk. The rental rate does not include the disk. So the total price is $194 plus tax.

For that amount of money, I will pressure wash with low angle nozzle and blast off the paint.

And that is pretty much all you need to do. This isn't epoxy. Most of my garage had some sort of paint. I scraped up the loose stuff, and went to town. Links in my sig if you want to see it. When I started, the lights were terrible in there, so hard to tell where the paint ended and where another color began.

Until one does a garage makeover, the amount of work involved is not understood. I have a newish garage, and it still has been months:

Sort the junk - keeper, toss, sell
Truck loads to the dump
Sell stuff on CraigsList
Search CL for 12 Gauge tool chest - rent a trailer and drive 100 miles to pick up
Install hoist in ceiling for heavy lifting off F150 bed
Swap old noisemaker Craftsman air compressor for quiet Husky
Review cabinets *** research, research, research ***
Plan out garage
Purchase cabinets
Setup cabinets - level, hang on walls
Sort and arrange keeper stuff into cabinets
Continue on with necessary things of life
....
