... buy specific sockets that you'll never use, just so your socket racks don't have empty spots? I hate opening a drawer and seeing empty pegs on my Westling Machine racks. Do I need a 6-point 3/8" drive 11/32 socket? Probably not... But that spot is empty and it drives me nuts! Evil-bay here I come! :lol_hitti

Absolutely...it's pointless but it bugs me seeing the empty spots on my hansen trays. I have a list of sizes that I look for at garage sales and the like.

I go to pawn shops with a list. But just end up buying every quality USA made socket they have, so the list ends up being pointless. I inventoried all my sockets. Then started a "second set" inventory. then a "third set" inventory. And still, some sockets, I have more than 3 or 4 of them. oh well. :dunno:

It drives me crazy if I have a blank spot, but my problem lies in my thinking" ok woody you are done with that job and darn you left a socket somewhere under that hood, now go find it". So if I fill the spots then I can sleep better knowing that I have not lost any sockets; Sounds crazy but it works for me.

That's kind of my thinking woody. As soon as I have all the spots filled, I'll know I haven't lost any. Of course, I have sockets that won't be sitting on the racks, because the racks don't hold enough. I guess I'll just have to be careful with those! :willy_nil

I assembled most of my Snap On socket sets from singles I aquired thruout the years.I have purchaced a few sets but the 1/2" sets were from singles. The other day I was going thru all my tools cleaning and organizing drawer by drawer. I then realized how many sockets I was missing to have full sets. So I started a list and went to the used tool store to buy fill in's. It's now becoming an obsession. I found a few on Ebay , a bunch from the tool store and even a Craftsman. Now I will have to head to the swap meets for the rest before I break down and buy them new off the tool truck.

I just buy Mechanics time saver racks, no problem with skips.

My racks aren't labeled, but if I have a 12 point 11/32, I want the 6 point one as well, or there will be an empty spot on it.

Speaking of... anyone have a 6 point 3/8"-drive proto 11/32 laying around they will part with? haha

Once again Hansen racks appeal more to OCD behavior than actual tool use. :wtf: Rails, as socket rails, preferably magrail TL endless customizing options, no empty pegs or wasted space.

I'm not alone! I bought (2) 25s, (2) 27s in 1/2 drive and countless others because.... they're there.! Oh the horror. Lol I hope I don't ever need a 1" 3/8 drive deep or a 10mm 1/2 drive. I need 6/7 deep in 3/8 drive and 1/4 drive 1/8 and 5/8 deep and shallow. It bugs me bad! I regret buying them stupid things! But man are they handy grabbing sockets. Lol what an oximoron.

im down to 4 sockets left to fill the hansens hardest one 5/8 deep 1/4 drive in snap on. SO stopped making it 6 years ago

I bought a Blue Point to fill that space, since Snappy doesn't have them anymore. Mixes in just fine with my Williams USA & Snap-On fillers.

I cant belive so stoped making the 5/8 socket 1/4 drive pisses me off. They also slimed the standard 3/8 drive swivel line. But yeah i buy all the sockets missing from my rails just so they are there

Well, my Westling Machine racks are slowly filling up. After a couple ebay orders, and a trip to a pawn shop (scored 50 USA made sockets for $12.50, even though most are duplicates of sizes I already have I couldn't pass them up) I'm down to 148 empty spots. Between the two full "sets" of Westling racks, I think i'm doing pretty good. Going for 6pt and 12pt of each size, deep and shallow. And I have a few misc sockets that won't fit into the rack. 29-32mm. oddball sizes like 19/32, 25/32, 31/32. I'm starting to fear that the ones I'm getting down to won't be easy to find in a pawn shop. 6pt 1/2" drive stuff, for example.

Nope I could care less if a size is missing in a set. my problem is I keep buying individual sockets whether I need them or not. (Dupes...)

I have SOOO many dupes. I guess I should make a list of what I have. and a list of what I need. and post up for possible trades.

I usually buy full sets and I never use socket holders with sizes stamped on them. I'd go batshit crazy if i had Hansen trays with empty posts! the empty posts would laugh at me and mock me....or at least that's what the voices in my head tell me :willy_nil

This sort of thing doesnt bother me because I use generic racks with the sizes written in marker, but I have a suggestion.

Instead of buying a socket you will never use, why not buy a duplicate of something that does get used and used often like 7/16, 1/2, 3/4, or even 13/16.

I have about a dozen of each of those sizes in good quality brands. They are in my "duplicates" box sitting on the bottom of my tool cart.

What racks do you use srmofo? Are they more space efficient than Hansen? For how many sockets they hold I don't like the big footprint of the Hansen racks.

I went to lowes a couple weeks ago and bought some Kobalt sockets to fill some spots in my trays. A 4.5mm deep well, 1/4 drive 9/16 and 5/8 come to mind along with a few more...
