When I received mine it the exact same part that was already installed. Same part number, same design. Everything was exactly the same as I already had. Anybody want it? Send me the shipping and I'll send it to you.

My compressor would trip the breaker without fail at my old garage. Not once in the new one. I have had no problems with the compressor other than that. But I have only used it twice since I replaced the recalled parts.. Wait and see what happens.

The shroud is simply a different formulation of plastic that won't catch fire when it melts, unlike the parts that were recalled. These oilless compressors get pretty hot. I'd put the new ones on, but its not going to solve any issues with the compressor. I doubt that the new plastic disperses heat better than the old one (unless you count no fire as less heat :scared:).

I received my "kit" a couple weeks ago. As others have said, it looks the same, just a different type of plastic. I haven't even bothered to replace it yet - hell, I may not even bother.

Anyone else notice that the recall goes back just about exactly 10 years, even though the models immediately before 2003 look identical? My best guess is that their lawyers have advised them that they are absolved of any liability for anything older than 10 years, and that's what actually defined the start date.

Just figured I'd point this out in case you have a model built prior to 2003. It may be exempt from the recall but not exempt from the problem.

I just came across this as a lurker, checked my old 30 gal upright that I rarely used since its was loudest pos ever, and its in the recall until I check the date lol. Mine was made in 02, exact same thing as the later models.

I wouldn't be too concerned. The replacement parts are pretty much identical to the originals - I guess they're just a different type of plastic.

Probably like you, I was initially excited to read about the recall, thinking I'd finally have the opportunity to get rid of this noise-maker. But no such luck. I really wish this thing would just blow-up - I know I won't replace it as long as it still works. Maybe I could get my neighbor to sue me for noise pollution and then I could counter-sue Sears/Devilbiss. :D

yeah, I rarely use it since it does piss off the neighbors, just stick with my electric tools or battery powered. Have to pick up a 2 stage for some painting soon though so I was hoping it was more of a recall lol..

RECALL rant

Last week i saw this thread and called the number to order the recall parts for my compressor. when the lady answered I could almost understand her and after a few minutes of what some people could consider communication, I had given her my name and info about the compressor only to be told that the system was having problems and that I would need to call back tomorrow. So the next day I call back and talk to a different lady but to my surprise, this one I could understand. I again give her all my info and was told I would get my parts in the mail in 5 to 10 days.
Fast forward to yesterday, I get a knock on the door and by the time I answered it the ups guy is driving away. I open the door and I see 3 identical boxes sitting on my porch. I bring them in, and open the first up and its this
IMG_20130627_162405_742.jpg

once I see its the compressor parts I get a little happy. I then move the the second box and open it up and what do I see, THE SAME EXACT PARTS! so I grab the 3rd box and yep, a 3rd set of the same parts. At this point I start to laugh and figure something happened in the ordering process and it sent out 3.
So that brings me to today. I'm sitting on my couch and again get a knock on the door and look out the window to see the ups guy getting into his truck. I opened the door and I have 5 more of these boxes sitting on the porch. So I now have a total of 8 of these kits sitting in my garage.

I call the number again and tell the guy who answers that I had ordered the recall parts for my compressor and that I have now received 8 of them. His reply of "well sir, you only need 1" made me want to run head first into a wall because he mad it sound like it was my screw up.I asked if he could tell me if there were anymore coming and he didnt have that info available to him so id have to call a different number to find out. So i asked if they wanted them back and he said to just take them to my nearest sears and drop them off there. :headscrat
The sad thing is, if you look in the second pic I posted you can see my compressor. Its the horizontal version and the kits that I got all look like they are made for the stand up vertical compressor... :Twitch: So it looks like I'll have to make another phone call and see if they sent me the correct one(s) or not.

I called a few months ago, no parts have shown up yet. Planning on calling again today to see what is going on.

Called just now, not much wait, not much English, but we communicated and they said 7 to 10 days, but no explanation of why I didn't get parts from the first call which he had a record of with my model number and stuff.

OK time to revive this zombie thread... I never ordered my recall kit and I'm wondering if someone has one they would be willing to sell me. The 800 numbers listed for ordering are non-operational...

Thank you all in advance!

It's sad the DeVilbiss name went to the junk merchants and the great old cast-iron heavy duty units have played musical chairs with their name for well on 25 years now.

Luis A. PM me.
Can you tell me specifically what's in the recall kit? Is it just the outer shroud(s) or is it also the motor end cap? If also the motor end cap, does it include the start and run capacitors?

I bought my 33 gal horizontal Craftsman compressor new around 2005 and this weekend it tripped the breaker during extended use and I found the run capacitor was melted down and smoking. And then I found out about the recall.

Just the shroud is included, made from a less flammable plastic.
Thanks for the fast response. Guess the recall kit won't help me at this point. My shroud and motor end cap are still okay. Motor itself seems okay too. If anyone has a source for replacement capacitors they could share, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Just take the spec and order one from eBay or Amazon.
Capacitance in Uf mfd are all microfarad different notation. Voltage level have to be greater or equal, the brand name doesn’t matter unless you prefer name brand. Mallory is a good name brand.

Yeah, the electrical specs aren't hard to meet, it's the physical size that makes it a challenge to find in order to do this without hacking up the motor cover. Can size is ~3.125"L x ~1.75"

I just search "45MFD 370VAC" and similar spec came out... 1.9"D and 3.5" not sure... you'll probably have to go through each specs for what you wanted. I thought they are pretty standard size for a given cap/volt value... If you still can't find one, it's best to start a new thread, maybe some one knows. Not too many people love zombie threads.

I accidentally opened up a link while researching the cause of the recall and stumbled upon a document detailing the replacement parts that come with the repair kit (see document attached). The replacement part no. is N176201. As stated in prior comments the replacement part is just the shroud covering the air compressor motor. The document reads: "The unit has already been repaired if none of the shroud labels list a horsepower rating." If the sticker(s) on your air compressor motor shroud don't list a horsepower rating, it has been repaired according to the recall. At least for the Craftsman units. I tried in vain contacting the original equipment manufacturer DeVilbiss via the phone number for Porter Cable given in the recall link. Porter Cable told me to call Craftsman, Craftsman told me to call Sears, and Sears doesn't have the part in stock. Nor could I find it online. If you have it on offer, please send me a PM. Thank you.
