What kind of wooden door is that you installed? Ive seen wooden doors take some bad punishment in direct weather, but I've never lived in a hot climate area so I wonder how much worse it gets in those areas.
It looks like it takes some orchestrating to get all those vehicles to location and ready for the show but worth it.
Glad to see the Venturi worked on the vent line.

Greetings from WV USA, with all the twisters that we've been getting over here put a door over that pit and call it a storm shelter. Saw one yesterday that had a sliding steel cover in tracks. That should make the local inspector do a little head scratching! Oops my bad for the late post on the pit.... built mine years ago under the radar so to speak and don't get to see many as nice as yours.

Cool.
We need plenty of pics.

No worries Clive. I will add some photos when it starts looking like it should inside. I intend just to move in this weekend and over the next week set it all up.

Just a good old fashioned timber door. It has been well stained many years ago (over 13 years) as it has been waiting to be used in this application. The good thing is it will not always be exposed to the weather as it will be hidden behind the sliding door. I still need to look into the vent system as I have some moisture in the cellar.

Luckily for me nothing has to be inspected as all that is well past and also lucky for me we do not have twisters like that here. My light in the pit is not working and I have to get the sparky back again to look at it. We struck some faulty ones so he may have to replace it yet again. When he comes back I may also talk to him about other options to vent the pit / cellar.

Also looking forward to seeing the finished pit. I've used mine on occasion. Even with a lift there are times it is occupied, so having the pit is still very handy! Mine was built in the early 70's and I can tell it was "hidden" from inspectors as it has an edge all the way around where a 1/2" sheet of plywood was laid and cemented over.

Ahh, the good old days! LOL!

Ed, If you go back to post 300 you will see the finished pit. I just have to work more on the ventilation as the cellar part is having condensation problems.

OK, I'm catching up quick now! I'm sure you'll lick the condensation (so to speak), but it'll likely be an ongoing issue, since the temperature change that is causing it is inherent in having a hole in the ground. Mine is also damp and cool, but the PO did lay a couple inches of sawdust in the bottom that helps in a variety of ways: dries up any condensation, soaks up oil and grease, and is very forgiving on the feet!

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

Well I have moved into the extensions and have stuff all over the place. I will hold off with the photos until 1, it is not late in the day 2, not dark and 3 when things look more presentable. I have cleaned up the area I have moved much of the good from and any time soon I can move my Bar Fridge and the comfy chairs to what will become a new social area.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

I have about 95% moved into the new display area.

I am now waiting on the Electircian to return and replace the light in the pit yet again. He tells me he had a faulty batch from the supplier. I am also foing to ask hime about a powered vent of some type as the pit / cellar is staying very damp.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

A massive rainstorm here last night. I now have to work out how the water got in between the colorbond walls and the concrete floor. Specialy as the floor is about a foot of the ground in places. Looks like I may have to silicone between the concrete and the colorbond.

Mind you we possibly had a months rain fall in a few hours last night as it was very heavy and the spoutings in may places simply did not cope

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

It was very wet up our way too. Heaviest rain we've had in years. The house gutters couldn't cope and the rain was cascading off the roof. All our tanks are well and truly full. I haven't been in the shed yet to see if any water got in.

Fortunately no risk of floodig here as we are on the top of a hill.

Cheers

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

I poured a mower strip around the shed after it was built, sure keeps the rain out.
15mm in the gauge so far, drizzling now and looks like its set in for the day. The shed is nice and dry, A/C on to take the chill off, my wife is away for the day = quality shed time and work on the Model A

75mm or just under 3 inches here. Too wet to check the tanks but the smaller ones would be full and overflowing. Water cascaded from the gutters here as well as the down pipes simply could not cope and that was on the house. Shed is ok except for a small amout of water that has blown in. I think all I need to do is silicone seal it.

The extensions are well off the ground so I have to work on the idea that water came in due to the way the wind was blowing. As I stated silicone will be the solution. Half the street has also washed into my driveway and washed it away.
Not as bad as my poor elderly neighbour that has had his ute buried again as the street washed into his garage.

A long time between updates.........

Looking more like it now. Still have lots of things on the floor.

The hidden door has been great and has had many that have seen the place wondering and who would know under all that on the floor is a cellar with the access hidden as well.

Moving day (or week, or month as the case may be) - what fun! You'll have that place feeling like home in no time. I have a feeling one could spend hours just exploring all the odds and ends you will have on display.

I'm also finding boxes of goodies I have had stored away as extras.

If I can find a 4BT Cummins here I will soon have room for another project.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

Back working in the Pit / Cellar today. Electrician has been back as the ballast has failed in the light fitting. Will have to wait for him to get parts and at present he has not been able to get them (poor quality Chinese made product). At the same time I have a fan heater and a fan trying to dry out the moisture so will be working on some type of electrical exhaust fan when the parts come for the light.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

Great build, I am surprised you did not insulate, the exterior walls. Your condensation in the pit, may be related to not insulating the building?

The reason, I say this is, I built a all steel building like yours, with 3 rows of block set on a concrete slab.
At night the cool air condenses and makes the block and floor damp.

To remedy this, I will have to spray foam the inside of the steel walls.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

Another option for you may a waterproof paint, like Dry Lock paint, for the block walls and epoxy for the floor.

Also do you have a fresh air intake for the pit? If not, you could use a core drill and bore threw the block and fill just under the floor, and vent out to the exterior wall.

The roof has insulation material. It goes on as a wire mesh then the insulation followed by the roof. No need to do the same on the walls. So far it is only one small section that stays damp not all of the cellar or all of the pit.

Do not have an intake as such but requirements are for an exhaust vent (a few posts back you will see how it is vented). The fan we will fit hopefully will remove not only anything dnagerous but we hope the damp air. I have been running a fan and fan heater in the pit / cellar in the damp area and it has made a difference even to the point the bricks can hold some of the heat. Moving the air looks to be the answer. If I had to paint it I would have to have it dry first. Still all good ideas thank you.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

With the air intake , it would alow you existing vent to flow when the pit is covered. The floor planks are not air tight, but may restrict air flow ? Do you have the moisture problem when the pit is open?

If you add a power vent you will need an opening for freh air. A shop vac is a good example, air in, air out, put your hand over the hose end and airflow out the exaust will stop. If your pit is open at all times, this would not be needed.

Paint would be a good idea, just for the added light reflection.

As for your fleet, I like them all! A guy I worked with has a 57 ford, car and the colors are close to yours.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

That is interesting as I have been thinking I should make a steel grate to replace a couple of the timbers to allow air in as at present the timber covers have swollen that much it is almost impossible to remove them. For safety at present it has been covered all the time with the exception of when I have been running the fan and heater to move the air. You have made a good point about airflow as for the air to go out it first has to go in. I will leave a couple of timbers off for a time to see if that helps. I doubt I am going to paint anything.

Glad you like the other (fleet) photos.

Well it now looks like to vent the pit I have to revert back to an earlier idea and remove some of the timber and make a mesh floor grate. The builder at the time talked me out of the idea and said cover it all in timber. Yet to work out just how I am going to do this although a couple of timber boards can simply be removed and a mesh cover welded to a steel frame should not be to hard to make. This way air will go in and the vent pipe will draw it out. Should be even better when the electrician comes back to fix the faulty pit light as hopefully we will add the fan at the same time.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

It would be easy to try. As long as the holes are not to big to get caught in it could work. Thanks for the idea I can easily try that. :)

You could always drill a pattern into the wood with different sized holes - if you were feeling artistic that is.

Five of the timbers now have holes like this. Should help with ventilation.
full.jpg

Not easy to see in this photo (due to the lights being on) but I am sure you get the idea.
Finally to hide the Cellar from the Pit
full.jpg

a door was made from left over materials and from part of the window frame.
Place is full of hidden doors now.

Still have a faulty light in the Pit to sort out and when that is done a powered vent will also be added.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

The electrician was back today to fix the pit light and with him he had a very small plug in vent fan that will work well with the pit vent system. I'll add photos later as my builder is going to make a timber mount for it soon.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

As promised.
View media item 31771This is the small fan my Electrician found for me. Fits the pipe nicely. Grey tape is on the exhaust end and to make it fit the vent pipe easily. My builder was also back to tidy up a few smaller jobs and whilst here he made a timber block mount for the fan. So it simply fits to the pipe and sits on the floor.
View media item 31772So now you can see how it all fits up. The good thing is it can be easily unplugged and removed from the vent pipe if required.

I am guessing the exhaust fan is similar to what you may find in a Kitchen exhaust vent system. Anyway it will do the job perfectly for what I require.

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

Could you not cut the pipe back to the blockwork, do away with the wooden block and screw the fan directly to the wall where it'll be more out of the way?

I could do that but decided it was best to keep the fan set up so I can remove it if required. If I screwed it to the pipe and I needed to remove it quickly then it would not be so easy. I may yet cut the pipe back closer to the wall.

Simon....what's the deal with that little mouse hole down in the bottom corner? That IS daylight I'm seeing isn't it?

And I had to laugh at myself when I saw the mouse hole and the kangaroos earlier. I doubt you would know but on our cartoons we have Slyvester the cat. His little tiny nephew sees a mouse, and when Sylvester goes to get it, here is a giant kangaroo that whips his ***. Hard to explain.

Anyways, around these parts you want to make sure you have all holes closed up tight like that because mice will get in and just ruin things.

And I have to say...the place looks great. I never have saw the latest pics of your showroom and wall up.:thumbup:

Re: Sheddwellers. (The Extension).

The light you can see was a problem that we have sealed with silicone. As the weather is so wet we can not seal the floor and wall. My concreter was not happy with the way one of his workers did that as he knew it was not just any old shed and that this would be a showroom. The problem is the wind is blowing the rain hard against the walls and back up the concrete in any small gap it can find. That hole is well sealed now but I still have to seal more along the walls. The hole you see is part of a fitting bracket for the sliding door outside so it does not hit the wall.

As for the cartoon you refer to, I know it well. It is a very funny cartoon.

It is so wet (and cold) here at present sealing up these little issues is not easy and in fact outside I have some in ground taps I am trying to fix yet the hole keeps filling with water and when it is not raining it must be soaking in. Making it impossible to do any work. Although I can add my property at present is self sufficient for water with every rain water tank overflowing to the point I have turned off my town supply water at the main.
