5x5 meters garage

Hi all, I am a member on the board since 2009 and I found a lot of great ideas and inspiration here.

I have 5x5 meters (16.5x16.5 feet garage) where my BMW e24 barely fits in, and if I don't forward it all way to the wall, door will land on the rear bumper.
Obviously it's not easy to work on the car when you can not walk over with the closed door so when weather permits, bigger jobs done on the fresh air:

Anyway, this garage is much better than my previous 1-car garage, so no complains here.

That's how the place looks now:

It's still work in progress of course. As many of us, I am buying cabinets and equipment used, when I can.

First was the big cabinet on the left, it was only $25 but was painted rose. I had a can of blue Tremclad paint around, so garage theme was determined by accident.

All other stuff I bought that was rusty or has weird colors, I repainted with the same color, like this $50 (about $900 new) Kennedy WB318548 workbench:

P1040864.jpg

One of the last things was $25 Beach 2260 bottom roller::

P1050069.jpg

P1050071.jpg

And beaten-up Beach 2289 12-drawer is waiting its turn:
P1050108.jpg

I still have to figure out final layout, which is not easy, since I have a door in the far left corner (which leads nowhere and I use niche behind it as a storage).

In the future, I'll probably will get rid from the big cabinet to get more floor space, but first I'll have to find some enclosed cabinets for the walls to store the stuff which is in big cabinet now.

I'll post some updates when I'll have them.

I'm diggin the Kennedy bench you revived, along with a bunch of other stuff. That rolling Beach cabinet was a good score for $25. Seems you and I have the same grey Cole drawer unit, I used to have mine on feet until I moved it, but I picked up some casters for it recently, looks like you did the same thing.

I like your plan for cabinets/cupboards, they really give you a lot of floor space, especially if you run them all the way to the ceiling, and store less used items higher up.

Nice looking garage, more pics!

Thanks!
I recently realized that I loose a lot of space using open shelves (plus, I don't really want some stuff I have be so visible). So yes, plan is to have cabinets on walls for storage and clean up some space on the floor.

While I'd like to have nice metal cabinets on walls, I am not about to buy new, so I am on hunt for used (cheap or free). So far two free cabinets scored (MDF and wooden), they're very different, but hopefully, when painted, they will not be an eye sore.

I'll put some more photos later, most of stuff I have here scored on kijiji or craigslist and have some stories behind it.

Got myself metal shelf unit that I will hang on the wall on the left from wheel racks. This should solve my shelving needs for canned stuff like paints, WD40 etc. At least everything will be in one place and I'll move pegboards and all hanging tools on the left side of the garage and get rid from the big blue cabinet (unfortunately, stickers will go too).

Haven't posted for a long time. I'll post more updates soon, meanwhile one of the ideas I've stole from the board: overhead storage in dead space above garage door, put together mostly from the srcap wood:

Painted old garage door to match new front door as well:

Got some metal cabinets from kijiji. As usual, all beaten but complete, two same size office cabinets, one with glass sliding doors and another with metal ones.
One top metal kitchen cabinet from 50-ies I think. Now it's time to make them look nice.

Painted cabinets, installed them to the walls.

Next to clean up all the mess, install pegboard and fix wiring for garage door opener and lamp.

nice working garage. How did you paint the cabinet, with a roller or some sort of sprayer?

I like the two tone blue theme in this garage, well played!

Looking forward to seeing it develop...

Thanks, Chris! Will try to post more updates.

Thanks! Tried tremclad spraycans first, didn't liked the color and since I am horrible with paint, overspray was everywhere.
Switched to regular tremclad and roller + brush in tight spaces. It covers quite good, especially at warmer temperatures.

This summer progress in the garage and on the cars was slower than planned because I've built pergola in the backyard and it took longer than expected.

Thanks! I really admire your skills with electronics and hands-on on welding and other projects. My next big goal is to learn how to weld. Hope the electric will hold 20A.

Thanks, Gabriele82! Don't want to spend much but still want nice working place, so I am always on hunt for deals. Plus, after looking on modern stuff I found it's not always better than used one and definitely much more expensive.

Had to rebuild started on wife's 99 Sienna.
Cleaned garage:

Yanked starter from the van.

Thank you very much Val_c. I'm not very good with the solder joints. ..diciamo that takes me really want to do but lately I have little time ... in fact my garage is in the grip of chaos. Unfortunately, here in Italy we do not have the culture of the garage "functional" and in order j ... especially people my age ... I have searched far and wide cabinets used ... but nothing to do anything or not sibtrova costs too much or It is rubbish. ..

I bought '86 BMW 635csi in 2004 like this:
bimmerfront3zk.jpg

bimmerrear8su.jpg

Then after some years, swapped the US bumpers to Euro and dropped the car on sports suspension:
hagley3.jpg

Then realized that I feel really uncomfortable driving such lowered car and installed MTech springs and car mostly looking like this now, with exception of missing rear bumper which I stupidly dinged, backing to my own van:
P1000671.jpg

This car is a toy that I intend to keep long long time.
This is we in US driving together with other e24s.

P1000564.jpg

Funny enough, my car was featured on the youngtimers wall in the BMW Museum in Munich this sprint.

The differences between US and Euro models are more than bumpers, but visually until 1988 North American cars had bigger aluminum bumpers mounted on shocks, different airdams, while European models featured more subtle chrome bumpers.
You can see US-bumper on first two photos of my car.

US cars also usually were better equipped, i.e. they had air conditioning, leather interiors. cruise controls etc. Engine was also detuned to comply with US smog regulations.

True. the Vespa piaggio also produced in the 80's had some extra things and responding to anti-pollution standards more stringent than here in Italy .... in fact vespa produced in the '80s years to your markets are never fitted as our ..: D. They were too squeeze to reduce emissions .. I'm thinking to diesel Gate and as you solve. ..

Some changes during this year. Trying to make new lighting fixture from old stuff I had around - old shower curtain tube and photo lights.
