Well, here's an interesting one. I'd planned to hold onto this, but let's see if there is any interest. I have a Snap-On Motor Tune-Up Set, vintage 1941. The set appears in the 1942 Snap-On catalog on page 68.

The set is MT-26-B and consists of the metal case, MT-23 compression gauge, MT-12 vacuum and pressure gauge, TL-89 timing light, and also a brass feeler gauge set, not shown in the catalog as part of the set, but clearly of the same vintage.

The metal case is in amazing shape. There is some minor surface rust, but overall the paint is very nice and there are no dings, dents, bends, etc.

The three paper manuals/charts that come with the set are in excellent condition with no tears. The manual itself has some dirt on the cover, but the rest of the pages are clean. The chart with specifications for the many auto manufacturers is excellent and clean and appears to never have been unfolded or used. It is very cool (and sad?) to see all of the cars listed that have been out of production for so long....Edsel, Desoto, Duesenberg, Dupont, LaSalle, Nash, Studebaker, Stutz, etc. The date on the literature is February 13, 1941.

The compression gauge is in incredible condition- just amazing. The chrome, dial, etc. are excellent, as is the rubber ****** at the bottom. This gauge may never have been used. The vacuum and pressure gauge has not fared so well. The bezel has corrosion on it, the lens is fogged/cloudy/yellow, and the dial has corroded so much that it really can't be read. I would guess that the gauge and valve still work, but that moisture did the dial in. If you were interested, there are people who paint clock dials who could restore this one as well.

The timing strobe is Blue-Point and is what came with the set, as described in the catalog (it appears that at that time, Snap-On made certain things, Blue-Point made others...BP wasn't just a lower-cost alternative to SO yet). The glass on the strobe is in very good shape, as is the plastic. The label is somewhat worn, but clearly says Blue-Point, Trademark, Snap-On Tools. The rubber wire housing is dry and fairly brittle. It has cracked in quite a few places, but the cloth underlayer does not appear to be torn anywhere. Both clips are attached in and great shape.

Every so often this vintage Snap-On stuff brings crazy $ from collectors on eBay. I may try my luck there, but I thought I'd offer it up here first to see if anyone was interested.

I'm asking $215 shipped.

*If it is not against forum rules, I'd consider trades or trades plus cash of items I am looking for. They are (prefer Mac, Matco, or Snap-On, but will consider other quality pieces):

Long ratchets (15"+) in 3/8" or 1/2"

Long breaker bar (20"+)

Long (16"+) 1/4" extension

Long (16"+) 1/2" extension

Metric universals

Really good hacksaw

15" or longer slip-joint pliers

Red metal Mac socket trays, hold multiple rows with a handle on the end, circa 1990s

Miniature Snap-On, Mac, or Matco boxes or banks

I'll add anything else that I think of.

My eBay username is robpetschke. My feedback, both as buyer and seller, is 530, 100% positive.

Well, like someone else once said, I don't want to badger anyone. Maybe someone will mention the thread to them.

Thanks for posting this. I now know what that timing light looking thing is that I have. I was about to chuck it.

Haha, that's pretty funny...not sure if you are referring to me, but I said the exact same thing a month or so ago.

I'll give them a head's up for you.

I'm a reasonable guy. If anyone here is interested, make me an offer. I'd like it to go to someone who collects this old stuff.

I had the same set, in just about the same condition a number of years ago, and put it on ebay. Didn't get any interest at all, and finally sold it at Carlisle. The problem today is that what was collectible years ago isn't today. The number of people that appreciate old tools are declining as we are getting older. I spent much of my life collecting, and now I have come to the point in my life where I realize that I am nearing the end of my life. For this reason, I am attempting to lighten the burden on everyone by divesting myself of those things that I no longer have a immediate need for. As a friend once said at his bankruptcy sale.... "If this wasn't my bankruptcy sale, I would probably be here buying this **** and taking it home." I guess that he just bought too much and that was his downfall. It was interesting to see that it was being snapped up by others that were just like him.
