I brush him everyday. I wash him at least once a month. I check him for injuries after each application. I monitor his weight constantly to keep him from getting too heavy, which can hurt his joints. I feed him only a Vet approved diet. I spend over $150 a month in just electricity alone to keep his kennel area warm.

More importantly, I praise him everytime he does something correctly. If I have to correct him, I always end the drill on a good note. I offer him affection whenever possible. I play ball with him. My kids play chase and hide-n-go-seek with him in the house.

He is loved by everyone in the household, except the cats. They hate him.

you need to train the cats to be drill Sargents like this one!

I am hoping to actually have a garage related update tomorrow. I plan on finding some wall cabinets for over the Coleman base cabinets, as well as upgrading all of the door latch hardware to heavy-duty magnetic closures. The locks that come with the Coleman stuff are a joke.

Also, for those of you still concerned about the dog, I am picking up some horse stall mats for the floor. These should help to insulate him better against the cold concrete as well as cushion his joints. He keeps tearing up the carpets I put in there.

Yup This sure is a abused and neglected, mistreated unhappy dog. Just look at him. :yikes: :rolleyes2
I suspect that this dog will live a better life and do more to help man kind than most humans will.
I would say what I think is Really Sad, but then I would be kicked off the forum for being rude!

What kind of dog is he? Looks like the girl we found a few years back. She's my sweetheart. Great dog...

I agree about the kennel....reduce the height, put a solid roof on it and use it for storage....say the kids stuff?

BTW...love dogs....would love to get a 'working' dog....but in our case, we have to take the unit home....and I'm not willing to give up my garage to park a radio car in it.....

Oh....and put some paint on those walls.....well worth the effort...it does wonders for the attitude....

I have been really tossing around the idea of tearing down the drywall on the two outside walls and insulating the garage. I could run some additional outlets while it is down to the studs as well. I can't see myself finishing the walls as they are now because I would have to finish mudding and sanding to make it look nice. Might as well pull it off and add insulation if I am gonna tape and mud.

Another type of working dog, Border Collies. I have 4. And although they have free reign of the house, the 2 youngest males sleep in their cages (which are not locked ever unless small children visit or some such rare occasion) the older female sleeps under the bed, and the oldest male under the desk in the office. Although I know that people can be cruel and indeed are, why else would we need K9 units after all; Every dog I've ever met has a hiding place of some sort to rest in. Just my 2 cents worth. Good lookin' Shepard!

Thats sad how you guys treat those dogs. He's got less freedom than the people he protects you from.

I used to think that way about cages and kennels for dogs until I had a Vet EDUCATE me and tell me how it enhances their feelings of security and peace of mind to have "their own" place. If you've been around a dog who has such a kennel, but is also allowed to wander around the house or yard, 9 out of 10 times, you'll find them in their kennel. It's where they feel safe. This dog, no doubt, gets his fair share of daily exercise.

Garage looks like you've worked your tail off trying to get the best bang for your sq. ft.
Good deal.
I spent 25 years wearing the badge. Retired Sgt., worked dope, homicide, patrol, high risk team (swat) Rangemaster/ armorer. Only thing I wanted to do but ever had the chance was K9.
I could feel my B.P. starting to climb when your critic started in. I am glad I don't have to put up with that anymore. Thaks for posting.

I needed to know you love that dog!

what you need is a swift kick to the ****!! there, I SAID IT, everyone else wants to.
how in the world some ppl get all mushy mushy over stuff like this blows my mind. the O.P. WORKS with the dog every single day. that dog may very well save his life some day. OF COURSE HE LOVES HIS DOG!!! and if you can't see that then you might as well just call it quits and lock yourself in the basement for the rest of your life.

to the O.P. sorry to keep the drama going. I was raised in a law enforcement house, and my uncle was a K9 officer for the Kansas Highway Patrol for many many years. he kept his dog after retiring. as did the city K9 officer when he retired. I've never seen a more loyal and "wanting to please" animal than a K9 dog. unhappy animals just don't that.

sorry, I'll end my rant by saying, NICE GARAGE!!!!!haha

We ran a training track today that took us up a huge ivy covered hill, over a chainlink fence, through the woods, and down a steep ravine to a creek, all in the dark, with only my flashlight with which to navigate. At one point, I just sat down and let the dog pull me down the ravine Indiana Jones style. And, at the end, he got to bite the bad guy (wearing a training sleeve). How many dogs get to have that much fun? Of course, we had to go back the way we came. That sucked.

Thanks! And thanks for your time behind the shield. Right now I have my dream job. 12 years on the job, currently in my 8th year on SWAT, and working K9. It does not get much better than this.

BK,

Great looking space, wish I had that much room! LOL. I'm using the same cabinets. Have you considered the pegboard wallpiece that goes along with the set. I really like that part of the setup with mine. Have a look:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41308

You did a great job with the room you have.

Keep up the good work! Still looking to see a pic of your K-9 partner too, love GSDs.

I took his pic off after that guy went off, just in case he tried to copy the pics to some other website about mistreated dogs. He pic is on page 2 however in a quote by another member coming to my defense. All black shepherd in the grass.

Ok, back to the garage... I think that I am gonna go ahead and pull the drywall and insulate the garage. At the same time, I am going to run some additional outlets and lights, as well as build some soffit style overhead storage. Then, I will finish the remaining drywall and give it a paint job.

My wife is going to kill me when she finds the entire contents of the garage in the den. :lol_hitti

UPDATES

I added some wall organizers above my new automotive care area. They are aluminum pieces from Summit Racing usually used for motorcycle/atv/snowmobile trailers. I plan on adding some peg board on the wall underneath the shelves. Need to get some paper towels for the dispenser on the right. The crate full of rags is temporary. I plan on getting a smaller container that I can keep in the base cabinets.

P2160001.jpg

I took some shots of the ceiling storage that I currently have. I took the picures standing in the same spot up against the garage door. The ceiling is 9'10" in this area and drops to 7'9".

In this picture, I have (3) 45" x 45" wide Hy-loft hanging shelves.

P2160003.jpg

In this picture, I have (2) 45" x 45" wide Hy-loft hanging shelves. I could not fit three because there is a diagonal wall in the back right corner.

P2160002.jpg

In both pictures, you can see the white wire shelves that the previous owner installed. I will be removing this as soon as I free up some space in the house for all the X-Mas decorations currently stored there.

Right now, I am playing the shuffle game. I make some room, shuffle stuff there, organize, downsize, and delete, and then repeat the process. Hopefully, I will have things finished and in their final places tomorrow. I need to get some storage containers that are all the same size and style so that I can maximize the usable space on the Hy-lofts.

I am considering building in cabinets with sliding doors similar to soffit style cabinets up where the white wire shelves are, and on the side with three hanging Hy-lofts.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Do you have something special on top of your base cabinets? The front edge looks different than the ones I have.

Also, not sure if you know or not but they make wall cabinets that match the other cabinets you have and I saw them on clearance at two Lowe's stores by me for $31 each.

The front edge is a plastic strip that came with the cabinets. I checked all over and could not find the wall cabinets in stock. All the Lowe's in the area have pulled the Coleman line from the stores.

**UPDATE**

Well, I got started on the disassembley of my garage in preparation for tearing out the drywall on the exterior walls. I started by moving everything on the overhead storage into the den. That should make the wife happy. :bounce:

Here's some shots of the empty overhead storage racks. This is looking counter clockwise around the garage.

DSCI0347.jpg

DSCI0346.jpg

DSCI0345.jpg

DSCI0344.jpg

I then removed all the overhead racks which gave me a much better look at the space that I have to work with in regards to built in cabinets.

DSCI0350.jpg

DSCI0351.jpg

DSCI0349.jpg

DSCI0348.jpg

The overhead space is 13'5" wide by 13' long. It is 25" higher than the rest of the garage. I plan on building cabinets along the two upper areas common with the 7'9"' ceiling. I haven't decided what to do with the 9'10" wall. I think that I will leave it open for bicycle storage and such.

Question;

1. Do you guys think that I could relocate the garage door brackets to the base of the cabinets? The door opener is too far back, but the door brackets are at about 25" from the front upper wall space.

Thoughts?

If I understand you right you are wanting to attach the rear bracket holding the door rail up to the cabinet that you are building? I don't see a problem at all with that just make sure that the cab's are sturdy and secure those doors aren't super heavy but I would not want to get knocked on the head by a falling one. Beautiful Dog BTW.

Here's what I was up to yesterday.

Just finished this about an hour ago...

I have some gaps that I am not so happy about, but that's what happens when you are working alone and drinking Bud Light. Nothing that some tape and compound won't fix. I have to finish putting the rest of the drywall screws in tomorrow. Then I have to figure out the game plan for the overhead storage. It's kinda hard working around all the stuff still in the garage. I will probably have to do some rearranging to make things a bit easier.

On a side note, you gotta love the utility of a Chevy Avalanche.

Did you ever look into getting that spray foam insulation for the walls. I have the same issue with my garage (already "finished"). But the front part of the garage sticks out a little from the rest of the house. So were the front of the house stops forward to the door is not insulated. I wanted to tear down all the sheetrock and insulate it all with the foam.

How were you going to attach the over head shelves to the joists? Were you going to do it before it was finished or after? I want to build shelves that span the 2 car door to hold some containers?

I have not looked into the spray foam. I am going to use lag bolts to attach the 2x4's to the ceiling and walls. I'll probably just go over the drywall, rather than cut the drywall back.

Here is where I was as of yesterday. Man, I do not like mudding and sanding. Getting the 15 year old ceiling was a pain. I think that I am going to put up white corrugated metal sheets on the ceiling rather than finish sand it. This weekend I am going to tackle the built in shelving/cabinets.

For the cost of materials and your labor did you consider blowing in insulation? I am thinking about insulating my garage but have not done a comparison.

I considered it, but since I have no experience doing it in existing walls, I quickly dismissed it. Pulling the drywall off also gave me a good look at things, and allowed me to add 4 new outlets and figure out where to eventually put a dog door.

**UPDATE**

I started framing in my storage cabinets today. I think it went pretty well, considering I did it alone. I hung off it, and it did not budge. I still have some vertical supports to build and more screws to sink, but I had to stop here for the night because my concentration was slipping.

This side is 13'6'' long, 32" deep, and will have about a 19" opening height.

DSCI0368.jpg

DSCI0369.jpg

This side is 11'11'' long, 16" deep and has the same opening height.

DSCI0370.jpg

Here's a different perspective.

DSCI0371.jpg

DSCI0372.jpg

I am going to use 1/2" MDF for the inside floor, and will either use 1/4" MDF for the bottom or drywall it. I am relocating the garage track brackets to the bottom of the cabinets. I will trim out the faces and most likely build sliding doors.
