One of my best childhood memories of my dad (RIP) was when he'd break out the blender and start making stuff. Mostly we'd make milkshakes and malts, but sometimes we'd try other stuff (ice cubes n fruit, etc.).
If you're doing it for the memories and stuff, go for it. However, I'm not convinced that it's going to save money or be more convenient or make a better product. |

Now that I've got a calculator in front of me, here is the math comparison:
To make 12 liters of Soda stream, you have $5.00 in syrup costs + $3.75 worth of the Co2. So $8.75 for 12 liters. When I was buying 6 packs, they're right at $5 for a six pack of 27 oz. bottles (4.2 liters total). So to get 12.6 liters, the cost of three 6 packs would be $15.00. Go to a convenience store and you're paying $1.49 for a 20 oz. So that would take 20 of those to add up to 12 liters, or $29.80 for what a Soda Stream does for $8.75. |

These things are as old as it comes. It seems to be a fad that keeps on coming back on tv every few years.
I had one about 20 years ago, still basically the same thing, sucked back then, sucks even still today. The price you factor in (never mind the initial investment) always ends up to more than the cost of buying pop/soda in cans/bottles. |

![]() I can buy 2 liter brand name (coke, pepsi, etc) for $1 standard retail big store, that is $6 for 12 liters. Once I go to my restaurant depot supplier (or even a warehouse store like costco), I get that for even cheaper. And we're not even talking about the off brands that are 69-75 cents for 2l at big stores or even Faygo! Last edited by ockie; 06-21-2012 at 08:15 AM. |

You'd have a tough time convincing me that this machine is a good financial investment. I think the best is to focus on it as a novel way to spend more time with the kids. |

Sounds like i'm gonna pass on buying one of these. Thanks for the input from everyone! To make a liter or two of soda once or twice a month sounds like good but i'm sure after a few months it would prolly start to just hang out in the pantry.

My dad (RIP) could make a mean vanilla malt. One time he slipped in a raw egg. We drank the milkshakes just fine before he told us about the raw egg. My brother immediately got sick n started dry heaving. Good times with the blender for sure. |

Personally I think everyone drinks wayyy too much soda in this country. I drink seltzer water with a little bit of cranberry or grape juice added. Once you get used to drinking that then soda tastes like pure liquid sugar.

I actually started carbonating when diet Cel-Ray soda went off the market. There was an episode of Good Eats which featured a recipe for a celery tonic, and within a few days I was receiving my order of 5 lbs of celery seeds in the mail (that required a surprising large box). |
