I agree. Factor into your calculations that if you rent, in 10 years when it needs to be hydro. tested, they bring you a new one for free. If you buy a tank, in 10 years you have to either pay to have it taken in and hydro. tested (good for 5 years) or dispose of that one and buy another one. Renting one is the smart move.

Do all tanks need hydro? From what I understand, only the tanks that have a DOT part number on them require hydro testing which is the smaller tanks used for bbq's and as part of a automotive propane system.

(i) A DOT specification 4B, 4BA, 4B240ET or 4BW (Secs. 178.50, 178.51,
178.55 and 178.61 of this subchapter) cylinder may be retested as
follows:
(A) For a cylinder with a water capacity of 12 pounds or less by
hydrostatic test using the water jacket method or by hydrostatic test
without determination of expansion (modified hydrostatic test method). A
retest must be performed 12 years after the original test date and at
12-year intervals thereafter.
(B) For a cylinder having a water capacity over 12 pounds--
(1) By hydrostatic test without determination of expansion (modified
hydrostatic test method). A retest must be performed 12 years after the
original test date and at 7-year intervals; or
(2) By hydrostatic test using the water jacket method. A retest must
be performed 12 years after the original test date and at 12-year
intervals thereafter.

DOT tanks are usually vertical tanks and need recertification. Horizontal tanks are mostly ASME tanks, and don't need recert.

I paid $1 lifetime lease for my 500 gallon tank.

Also, if you do plan to buy a used tank, be very careful. A lot of tanks are owned by the gas company so when you try to get it filled, they take it back.

If you don't use a certain amount of propane in a year, they charge you. I think you have to use a full tank per year, which in my case I don't, since it's just used for a fireplace.

Ok, my vertical 120 gallon is an ASME tank from what I can tell. No DOT stamping or plates on it. WOOT!

What ever you get , make sure you can refill it with out disconnecting the line . Alot of the ones they sell at lowes and home depot, you have to unhook and then fill.

They don't sell 100 gallon tanks at Lowes or Home Depot.

Actually, they don't sell 50gal tanks either, they sell 100lb tanks which hold a bit under 25 gallons. He'd need 4.

FWIW, around these parts codes call for only 100gal tanks if they're less than 50 or 100' (Forget what the distance was but that wasn't an option for me) and I wanted it next the garage. They said they can do five 100 gal tanks when its next to the structure side by side or within the above distance but not a bigger one(s). They agree its stupid too.

Home depot do sell 50 gallon tank, I have look at them over thirty time thinking to get one for the bbq. I see them every week in the garden center over by the bug spray. They are white and stand about four foot tall

Code here in LaPlata county says nothing larger than a 125 gallon tank can be next to a building. A 250 tank must be 30 feet away and the line buried. So, the propane company installed a 125 one week and then installed another 125 next to it the following week. I use two different companies (two 500 gallon tanks and three 125 gallon tanks) and have the tank rental down to 50 cents each a month. I'd never own a tank when you can rent them for next to nothing and any problems are the company's problems.

The upside to owning as that you can shop around for your fill, and fill it when you want. If you rent a tank they'll charge you more for the fill, and fill it in the dead of winter when propane prices are at their highest.

I'm leasing a 500 gallon tank now, but will probably look into buying a 1000 gallon tank next year. The bigger the tank, the bigger the discount (bulk rates).

Not much goes wrong with tanks. Just keep 'em painted so they don't rust. Regulators need replacing occasionally, but they don't cost much.

I paid about $550 or so for my 250 gal. tank. I really don't use much: might put a hundred gallons in it about twice a year or so... You can't really tell it's even being used in the summer...
