Not looking to spend more than say $150-200. Whats a good choice? I.R? Models and experience are appreciated! Will be used in a shop environment and get pounded frequently.

Another vote for I.R. here.If you want something that will last a long time, I.R. is the way to go.

MG325 or IR 2115TiMax will be the best bet.
Main reason I like MG325 is anvil stopper.

Most people are mostly correct in recommending the 2115TIMAX, just make sure you get the quiet version!!! It's called the 2115QTIMAX. Probably costs $5-$25 more but totally worth it. I love my quiet IR guns!
yes quiet does make a big difference especially when your under a car on in a wheel well working in confined spaces. it will save your ears.
I have a mg31 and people on here can tell you how loud those things are. Its not very pleasant working in small spaces with it but still gets the job done.

Even the "noisy" one is no big deal because if it actually has to hammer or take more than a split second to spin off nut, I am usually reaching for the 2135 instead.
It's no aircat as far as quietness, but it certainly isn't tremendously noisy. My angle air drill has it beat by a long shot when it comes to making needless noise.

HF 3/8" earthquake impact on clearance for $48 plus 20% off coupon $39 out the door. Originally $90 impact. From what I know, you aren't a "HF" type of guy, but these things are a steal... Look pretty darn close to an IR if you ask me...

The hammering is not quiet, it's just as loud as any gun. It's the free spinning noise that's quiet.

How inferior is my Snap On MG-31. Not a pro mechanic here. Just a tool polisher that restores cars and maintains my own driver and truck.trailer.
About 30 ft lbs behind the new stuff. He mg31 will suffice. I use it as a professional mechanic so you should be fine.
He stated it was for a shop environment and it would get pounded frequently. I don't think the HF impacts have been really proven acceptable durability-wise beyond the backyard mechanic.

I would not agree with that statement. I am part time myself now days but had plenty of IRs back in my big day. I think the Earthquake is about as good as any IR I owned except for maybe the new top of the line versions. I also know full time line mechanics that have them and like how well they work and hold up. It was these people that kind of turned me on to them......
The main problem is to many people see the HF logo and immediately jump to conclusions without seeing exactly what is under the hood. HF buys these Eartquake air tools from some of the same OEMs that some of the tool truck companies buy from.
I agree that HF does sell some real serious junk but they also sell some real good stuff as well

I am a full time auto-tech have been using the 1/2in earthquake for the past year and it has held up fine havn't ran into much that I couldn't take off Busted off some 1 3/16 lug nuts off a rusted up 3500 ram hammered it a few times and spun right off, and the caliper mounting bolts. A few crank bolts here and there that required a 24in breaker bar with a 4ft cheater pipe on it.
So unless people have actually used it in a work environment their comments are irrelevant.
I will say it is a heavy son of a gun though. On days where it gets used heavily my wrist is a little tired at the end of the day. I bought a aircat 1000th to save my wrist. But my earthquake still has a place in my toolbox as my back up gun.
and if you look at the earthquake 3/8 it looks exactly like the ir212 and has essentially the same specs.

With used prices for IR 2115TiMax from 110-125 I see no reason not to go that route.
