New Mobile Base for my Band Saw

I have been changing some things around my shop lately.

I decided to sell my 23" Pehaka band Saw and replaced it with a 14" Powermatic.

I needed to make a base that would allow me to move the saw around to use it and then store it out of the way when I didn't need it.

Here's what I came up with.

It's 1.5" x 3" tubing, 3/16" cold rolled plate, and 1.25" round tube.

I still need to add some gussets to the bolt cups on top of the 3/16" plate.

I built everything from scratch with my Dry-cut saw, bandsaw, 12" disc sander, and drill press and then I TIG welded it all together and bolted (4) locking casters to it.

Looks great! I was going to suggest putting gussets on the plates until I re-read your post and saw you'd thought of that already.

Wow, I'm impressed that you took the time to Tig weld your brkt.Looks sharp.
When I make things for my shop I tend to zap it with the mig and slap things together a little. Shame on me. :bounce:

I like the clean look and of course those Tig welds! I recently built some bases for a drill press and lathe using L brackets to mount the casters but I like the simplicity of your design. I think I will try it out for a Jet bandsaw and another drill press I need to make mobile. Thanks for posting.

That's funny, I said the same thing to myself when I set it on the ground for the first time yesterday.

It does have that "slammed" look.

Thanks Dan. Yep, I built the bolt cups with the intention of adding some vertical gussets. I just didn't have time yesterday to make them.

I had the MIG gun in hand and sat there staring at my TIG....then thought, "Hell, I'm worth a little TIG work now and then!"

It is nice to finally build something for myself.

Thanks luvit. I've needed to build a few of these for a while and after I get done with this one I'll hopefully have the time to do some more for other machines.

I think its safe to say that it paid off in the end. I know one guy commented on your work on thirdgen.org.

I figure with the quality of your welds you can pick and choose your work. Also I figure you can also tell people your timeline for getting work done is "when I get to it is when it will be finished. Don't like it? There's the door." :bounce:

Not to sound like ******* but around by me I got a guy that does nothing but high dollar race cars. All his customers tell me the same thing.... I dropped off my car there and told him to give me a call when its done. NOBODY rushes that guy...

I'm not quite "that guy". :pimpflash

I'm 32 and still have tons to learn and experience. I do take pride in my work and always build things as if I were building them for myself, no matter who they're for.

I do have a friend however that is just like that. He's my age and his work is unbelievable!...and NOBODY rushes him. He builds some of the finest off-road vehicles around. He has worked for Robby Gordon and a host of other top racing names...and he is still the one to dictate when he gets the job done.

ohhhhh man... you're one year older than me. A couple months ago a guy came to me and offered to put a roll bar in my car. He really took pride in his work ect ect so I gave him the job. Before I gave him the job I asked him... how old he was.... 24 years old. I gotta learn how to weld.

I have to say I'm not a bad welder, But I would never find the time to TIG something for myself..It's just against the law, Any work I do for me is a 3 minute slap together to get a job done for someone else..I really like the way your tig welds look, And cudos to you for doing it on your own project..Maybe one day I will be allowed to do something like that for nobody else but me....

Very nice! The gussets and closing in the ends of the tube really finishes it off.

That turned out really nice. I just happen to have some stock and a few sets of wheels. I do believe I have decided what to do with them.
