Another Vintage Snap On box is restored

I just picked up what I believe is a 1950's Snap on KR-56 6 drawer tool box for $50 off Craigslist. I did 75 miles of windshield time roundtrip through the winding roads and bluffs of Wisconsin to pick it up tonight from a very nice guy who has owned this box for more than 16 years and never used it. The price was right and my goal is to restore it to original and get another 50 years out of it.

As bought:

It is rough, beat up, rusty, dirty, greasy with peeling paint and full of dead bugs; I could not be happier with my first Snap On box. Like most of us here on GJ, I like old things and enjoy finding, cleaning, restoring and using old tools. My plan is to take it apart, have it sand blasted, hammer and dolly the dents and make it square and true, prime, paint and put her to use again. I am not a professional mechanic but build, restore and ride vintage Triumph, BSA, Norton and Triton motorcycles for fun, to keep sane and to stay out of trouble. I have a small workspace and do not need or want a huge box and this little Snap On box will hold all my motorcycle specialty, factory service tools, Whitworth wrenches, sockets and tap and die kits. it is 26" wide x 12" deep and 14.25" high and weighs 59 lbs. I will patiently search for the matching intermediate and lower boxes.

One hour later...

No lost tools, just dead bugs

I used two modified hacksaw blades to remove the drawer slides. Once you understand what you are doing, they come off easily. I found if you insert the blade, push the drawer and slide on to the blade then pull the drawers, they come off easily.

The lock and handle came off easily and I drilled out the rivets holding the badge. It looks like the exterior of the box was spray painted a deeper red than OEM color. I took several reference photos of the bottom of the drawers, under the Snap On badge and on the inside to capture what I believe is the original color. It is going to the paint store tomorrow to be scanned and compared to the Ditzler formulas floating around the forum and then to be sandblasted.

I hope to be pounding out dents and primering on Friday, and painting this weekend, stay tuned...

Nice, I saw a box like that but lacked the skills to restore it. Plus they wanted 100$ for a box with significant dents and rust. I'm glad you're saving this though. Subscribed.

That's an UGLY baby! I did one similar a while back and only thought it was in bad shape. Anything can be salvaged if you are willing to put enough work and money into it with no hope of getting it back. Been there, done that, will probably again.

I can't wait for follow on pics.:) When it goes to the sandblasters will you asked how the work will be done, ie the 250 cfm blaster or a small unit?
The local shop here in Amarillo is afraid of going through the metal on my Cornwell box or they don't want the work?

"your nuts" (sic) Yes, I am a bit crazy, but good crazy.

Thanks guys.

My sandblaster knows me and my affinity for weird, old motorcycle parts. I pay him well to to take his time and do it right, so I am certain he will not damage it. The box looks terrible, but the metal is really solid. He will relate and appreciate an old Snap On box.

I think that will be a very rewarding project! On the last old snap on box that I did, I took one of the drawers to Diamond Vogel in Mankato, and they did an excellent job of custom color matching the color. I used some of there industrial enamel, and it turned out very nice. They saved the color in there computer as "Snap On Red". Give them a call to get the formula, or make a little trip. Here is how the color looks on my box.

That box looks like a challenge! I'm looking forward to the progress. I have a Mac & Snap-on box I'd like to do one of these days.

Thanks all. I dropped off the box at my sandblaster over lunch and he said he can do it with out distorting or damaging it.

My normal paint shop's scanner is in Germany for repairs so I went with custom mixed PPG paint, Ditzler #73504 "Snap On Tool Red" paint code, recommended by others on this forum, Here is the can and a test swatch for reference:

A first, it did not look as orange as I wanted and the older boxes seem to be, but after it dried it looked better and I think I may do some more tests and color research.

$40 (estimated) for sandblasting and $38 at O'Reillys for a quart of paint. I also picked up some self-etching primer and a red sandable primer when it comes to prep. Should have the freshly blasted box back Friday afternoon, stay tuned!

It is only a toolbox.... The new Snap On Red (73504) paint bothered me so I bought a different paint matched to the bottom of a drawer. To my eye, the original 1940's and 50's Snap On red degrades and becomes more orange over time. Some call it "tomato soup" red. I researched and noticed color changes in photos of older boxes, particularly where stickers had been recently been removed. It seems UV light causes the OEM red paint paint to degrade and become more orange. My box had at least four different shades of red, but the bottom of the drawers were original paint, away from UV, so I matched it to a Dupont single stage acrylic enamel, R674. Here it is:

I hope to be banging and priming tomorrow.

I found that allis chambers red from ace hardware matched the best to my old Snap-On. The bottom three drawers were added by me and rattle canned allis chambers red, sure looks orange to me. The rest of the box is original. Looking forward to the progress report:thumbup:

R674?

Will you be using primer surfacer?

Thanks Johnny! Love the added drawers.

I plan on using Duplicolor self-etching metal primer and a reddish colored sanding primer for the guide, sanding and final coats. Duh, thanks, R674, it's early...

Quick update:

I picked up my box from Custom Powdercoating in MN City, thanks guys!

After sandblasting there was no major drama or surprises. A few minor holes, some slight pitting in a few of the drawers, but overall the metal is very solid. No date code stamped anywhere leads me to believe this is a 1940's model. I spent several hours this weekend pounding out dents of the box with hammers and dollys, some spot welding to fill holes and fix loose sections, straightening the bottom edges and got everything square, plumb and true. Took my time and did it right. I also sanded, etch-primed, spot-filled and sand primed the drawers.
IMAG0921.jpg

Drawers ready for paint.

I am going to do some more work on the box tonight (sanding, some body filler, sanding and priming and plan to paint everything tomorrow night. Stay tuned.

Compressor and small HVLP gun. I have painted and restored many vintage British bikes and know how to do the job right. Tomorrow I have time off and will paint the box.

Have fun with the nameplate. I tried several different ways and finally settled on a Sticker over the original nameplate and it looks awesome. Let me know if you need one. I have a couple left and I can get more. When I did mine it was the one thing that frustrated me more than anything.

Sorry all, the weather is absolutely beautiful and I worked both my days off this week so every moment of my precious free time looked like this:
IMAG0923.jpg

I have a busy couple of days with work and plan to finish off the box later this week. Sorry to keep you hanging. I found a matching bottom section on Craigslist two hours away, in rough shape and the price is high, so I am going to wait till I find another lower case to restore. I tried to buy a later year lower box at auction but it sold for twice what I was willing to pay. I did however win a $15 Kennedy tool box filled with crappy tools, rusty hardware and a few gems including a Proto 6734 valve adjuster, Snap On duck bill pliers, Starrett 1" micrometer and a Blue Point Wrench. Not bad.

Thanks all. Instead of working on my box this weekend I went to a tool auction instead and found a pair of pristine vintage Waterloo tool boxes.
IMAG0951.jpg

I have a busy work and social week but will post updates as I can. My goal is to finish the Snap On box and find a matching bottom cabinet, keep both the Waterloo and Snap On boxes and get rid of my modern crappy "Stack On" garage sale boxes ASAP.

Nice on the sand blasting. That's really the way to go.

Also -- great observation on the color degradation of the SO red. Most of the old timers I corresponded with at SO Corp appear gone, but I wonder if there's anyone left that has the exact color formulas for the old boxes. Maybe the SO museum?
