Rebuilt the single speed transmission in my lawn mower. One gear, one pinion and a roll pin that was sitting in the bottom of the housing.

I recently inherited a million tools so I have been spending the past week going through all of them and putting sets together... I have way to many tools and not enough garage space! Sounds crazy I know but you have to see what im working with! The best part is there is alot of vintage snap on tools so ive been having a blast hooking them up!

Not all today, but this weekend I...
fixed the power window in the wife's Caravan (major brownie points there) sleeved the rear wheel cylinders for my old convertible organized the sockets in my box (don't laugh that's actually a bigger task than it sounds) painted the trim on the back door painted the visible gas pump started to clean/organize the truck tools for the tow vehicle (got about 1/2 done) cleaned the lathe and then dirtied it again polished the crank for my old convertible Shit! I didn't think I actually got as much done as I did! I did better than I thought ;-) |

I've been building a work bench. I decided to experiment a little and see what comes of it. So, I grabbed some extra slats off of some old pallets and cover the top and bottom portions of the table. I'm also sectioning off the top with some cedar boards. The kind used on a privacy fence. There is a bit of an edge on top, so I will try to fill it with some kind of poxy resin and create a clear coat top on it. I probably won't use it as a work bench now, but I can have an extra table in the garage for various uses.

Not a hell of a lot...picked up a 7 drawer side box at HF yesterday PM...figured I had enough room under the vise to just set it on the floor under the workbench and add additional tool storage...wrong! had to move a couple of support legs on the bench to get it in (I was 3/8" too narrow)...started shuttling tools from the main box to the add on...didn't seem to be working out as I had hoped...I now have some empty drawers in the main box, but I'm not comfortable with how things are laying out...back to the drawing board.

[IMG] [/IMG]This is the cabinet I built to hold some of my tools. It is 48" tall, 92" wide, and 28" deep. I am thinking about putting some pegboard on the inside of the doors to hold light stuff like carpenter squares, hand saws, and small hardware. I am NOT a cabinet maker (yet) and I was proud of myself because the doors open and close properly and do not rub or squeak anywhere. I don't like the gap where the doors meet, so I may have to dream up some kind of trim or something to close up this gap. Last edited by Racecarl; 11-27-2011 at 09:41 PM. |

I've been working on my pickup -
Replaced the gas tank - cleaned, undercoated, new straps, fuel filter and paint. ![]() ![]() ![]() I had broken springs and rotted out hangers - those had to go. ![]() ![]() A few week ago I did a timing chain, water pump, crank pulley, balancer, transmission swap and yanked a header to weld nuts on a broken header bolt to remove it from the head. ![]() Last night I did some super ghetto exhaust work - I booger welded in a chunk of pipe I had to cut to get to the transmission lines (trans swap) and I hacked off the blown glasspacks and hastily clamped on a new Thrush muffler and hung it with a ratchet strap. About as redneck as it gets, but it's a LOT quieter now and will last just long enough to get it to the exhaust shop next week. This is a plow truck - it might get 1 mile on it before the exhaust.

Wow, how did you get it in there with the brake booster in place? I really loved my '72 and '78, but I gotta admit the new booster and heater box design for '79 and up made it easier to work on them.

I think there already is a long standing thread like this, but it's good to see people are still active. I feel like a slug looking at what others accomplished.
I got the fun car put away for the winter, checked brakes and cleaned wheels: ![]() Then got an old snow blower running after a 3 year hibernation. Are they supposed to look like this?

- Built the last 2 cabinets of the window seat and bookcases for our son's nursery - sounds like he may be coming a couple weeks early based on my wife's doctor appointment this morning.
- Re-built a shelf over the area where I keep trash cans since the town's trash company issued 65 gallon trash and recycling totes last week - Cleaned up a bunch of crap from using my garage as a woodworking shop the last 5+ months - time to make room for both vehicles for the winter. - Washed, waxed, and cleaned the interior of my wife's Escape just in time for 4 straight days of rain and snow. |

I got the steel to make a mobile base for my bandsaw. Took a few measurements and drilled into the end of a bolt.

Finished re-assembling the carb off of my Polaris Sportsman 500 and installed it.
Started it up, took it for a ride, came back and hooked up the Warn snow blade. Then sat around the wood stove and drank a beer ("Snow Day" by New Belgium Brewing out of Fort Collins, Colo.) |

Today I worked on Christmas decorations in my back garage. My wife always wanted an arch over the driveway entrance with garland and icicle lights. I tried once using PVC pipe but it was too flimsy. I am using half inch conduit which is better but not rigid enough but with enough guy wires may make it. I don't have access to a set of rolls to run a larger pipe through, any suggestions. I told her it would be great is I used the half inch conduit and built a 3 pipe truss but she didn't like that idea. I only suggest!

Just did some basketball drills with my 10 year old daughter, as she has her first tournament of the year this weekend, and I will miss it as I'm traveling for work.
Of course, I first lined two of the drawers on my "new to me" RemLine top chest, and laid out my new set of Williams stubbies that I bought off the guy here on GJ (but from eBay). Isn't life grand? ![]() Dave |

Nothing in my garage but I've been in is several other peoples today, it is Saturday here.
Towed my tandem trailer to one mates lock up to pick up his Isuzu Mu (Amigo) and took it to where he works, unloaded that and took him home to get his Isuzu Wizard (Rodeo), that I sold him about a year ago. He needs to take the engine out of the Mu and put it in the Wizard as the engine knocks and uses more oil than diesel! Shoot home and picked up my Peugeot 206 and took it to the local garage to get a WOF (Warrent of Fitness = six monthly safety inspection). On the way home stopped at the Toybox, another mates workshop, and helped him shift some stuff, including the PTO winch that is going on the front on my Patrol eventually, off the floor onto shelves. Home for lunch and some GJ and P4x4. Had an afternoon snooze for a couple of hours then back to the first mates work to see what was up with the engine, ended up loading the Mu back up and taking it back to his lockup. Now, since I've just finished dinner I'm surfing several forums, drinking wine, watching Youtube videos and TV. I shouls be editing some video fromlast weekends 4wd trip but as I'm about to start the second bottle of wine I don't think it will get done tonight.

well, ill catch up for two days here.
last night i didn't get out of the garage till 10pm. i got my B10 Allis back together minus a few parts i had to pick up at work today. i was trying to find some stuff that i have no clue what i did with it but it will show up. today, i got the gas tank it with the new shut off and gas cap, battery too. battery $78 shut off $18 gas cap $17 total w/tax $120 hearing my Allis running again, priceless. now it steers properly too! i had to rebuild the steering last winter and never finished putting things together over the summer. now all i have to do is put the blower or plow on and mount the rear weight and im snow ready! wish i had a cab

Got he oil pan back on the tractor that went swimming during Tropical Storm Irene. I have been picking away at it for two months now, but the end is in sight.
I drained everything as soon as the water went down and I could get to it. Pulled the plugs and poured oil in the cylinders, turned the engine over to make sure it wouldn't seize. Then, dropped the pan, removed the starter, generator, carburetor, opened up the dash panel, and started cleaning. every opening was packed with silt, the bigger holes were stuffed with twigs, bits of grass, and cornstalks. I hope to get the fluids filled back up tomorrow and try to start it. After that I still need to repack the wheel bearings, and open up the steering gear and clean it out. The radiator is over full, it's a non pressurized system and the cap let flood water in, it tests to 25 degrees, but I want to warm the engine up and get everything mixed, test it again before I just drain it. If there is only a couple quarts of flood water floating on top it may be OK. Once I get this done I need to move in my plow truck and weld the frame, re-install the gas tanks and bed, and get ready to plow snow. Once that is done there is another flooded tractor to deal with, and one that just broke its crankshaft for no apparent reason. |

Walked by my car and thought I need to get off my ass and get back to work...installing long tube stainless steel headers and new motor mounts. One motivator is, we cant get the Christmas decorations out of the attic cause the car is blocking the stairs from coming down. Changed out some dud bulbs to new Phillips 6500k t8 tubes, man those bulbs get with it!

Getting close to completion of my Manitowoc cff 90. I picked it up for $500.00 and will have about $300.00 into it in new cables and pads. Really looking forward to having lift in shop.. I think my friends are also excited.

Emptyed out a few drawers of the old dressers that I'm using in the garage. This is in order to begin turning the 2 dresser units into a large workbench / worktable. Really cold out though - around 38 degrees, so I had to dart back in the house every 1/2 hour or so.......

Finished the up grades to the snow plow.Made up a relitivly quick change round cover for the wear blade so as to reduce the amount of landscapeing needed in the spring. Also put a steel top deflecter, the rubber thing was crap anyway. "V" ed out some cracks in the push frame and threw some wire on top of them.
still cant get pics to go up,get a "bad server responce" window. |

Not yesterday but over the weekend I picked up a new Craftsman 26" 3 piece tool box plus tools from a local pawn shop for $275! Then commenced to rearanging tools, modifing an old broken tool box into an intermediate section, then rearanging and cleaning the garage up some.

With my single garage, space is at a premium so I have been throwing crap out, organizing and with the help of GJ discovered how great Storage can be...I built cabinets over my bench (10' x 24' x 18"). Now that I have that first one I will build two more down each side of the garage. I have a 914 in there and a KTM 200 EXC so tryin to keep stuff from falling on the car has been driving me nuts....lucky so far!
Lots of work to come but feel good about the cabinets. |

This weekend I looked and noticed everyone was gone!!! Ahh time alone - I immediately went into the garage and made this. Actually I made it awhile ago - I just now ball milled the lettering.
It's the fuel lever off my dragster - the black sharpie kept wearing off ;-0 Not much of a project, but I know why everyone loves CNC's so much - it's a tad bit more work on a manual bridgeport ;-) |

Replaced a 20 year old garage door opener. For the most part, an easy job. The new one has an electric eye that had to be wired. Had to punch a couple of small holes in the ceiling, fish the wires through the insulation, and remove some attic decking to get to the top of the opener. That added an extra hour or so.
This opener has a battery backup, twin lights, and a motion activated light switch. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...1&ddkey=Search |

Tried without success to find my box of drill bits amongst the many cardboiard boxes holding my garage contents, it seems also the contents of the wifes shed and greenhosue got dumped in my new garage too. I really need a few days out there to sort some basic organisation out and unpack as soon as we've unpacked the bulk of the house. Had a squint at the electrics in the house and think I can use the 60 amp fuse and switchgear that used to go out to the barn thats been sold seperately to run a decent supply out to the garage. Just got to get some armoured cable and bury it across the yard.

Today I broke out the lathe and made a whomping stick out of a 2x4 (or a tire knocker, either way I could beat the crap out of someone - fit nice behind the seat of the car). Cleaned up my mess afterwards too.
![]() I also put a new valve core in one of the tires of my Cushman, kept going flat. Took a Cushman load of trash from cleaning the garage out to the street. Swapped out brake shoes on a car I've got sold. Also fixed the dead battery on the Street Rod.

'89-'90 Turf Truckster - 6spd, hydraulic dump, PTO. Brakes froze up, never worked since I got it 4 years ago. If I need to stop I just keep going til I hit something. I have a master cylinder to put on it but I know it'll need more than that.

Soon I will be fixing mine up. It is high on the priority list.
When I moved up here to the country I bough a small enclosed trailer....cheap. I used it like crazy transporting stuff little by little from my one house up to the country (60 miles). I used it some more a little later on too. Somehow someone set me up when it came time to sell it. I went and checked out his shop and saw the Truckster and told him I'd swap him. I also picked up a 2 Toro Groundsmasters in the same deal. My Truckster is 4 wheeled too. Nice little truck, does great driving through the woods...except getting clipped by tree limbs. Normally sits all year until the winter then I get it running for cutting firewood.

Kermit: the haulster is 3-wheel and CA will let you register as motorcycle or truck (need seat belt).. if i can ever get hold of another, im taking it that day!
it's FINALLY winter in CA... all week it has been down to 25F at night and freezing my damn water main riser.

Played around with my junker Harbor Freight 90amp welder. Had it forever and it never worked right. Turned out the feed tension was messed up and it had intermittent adequate tension to feed the wire. I tried fixing it and ended up breaking it. Made a new piece, worked like a charm - much better. Now the machine will actually lay a bead. Before it was ALL popcorn. I'm happy.
Next week I hope to finish my mini-trailer, build shelves for the kitchen cabinets, and do some more cleanup on the garage.

Replaced a throttle position sensor, then cleaned out the secondary air injection tube (was nearly completely clogged with a big fat carbon-cake).
This on a Saturn SL1. (thank goodness for impact tools)

Installed new boxes for upcoming reno. We put in something like 12 rectangle boxes, and four octogon boxes for lights. Still need three more rectangle boxes, another octo, and two 4" squar boxes for 220.

Today and yesterday, installed 160' of air line in the shop. 80' of 1/2" copper and 80' of 1/2" black iron pipe. I've had the copper for years so I used it. Wouldn't do it at todays prices though. There are 12 places to plug into the system, 4 are dedicated for pneumatic machines, the rest are for smaller hand held tools. Had leak problems with some Chinese Homer Despot npt fittings. The threaded area was sort of hex shaped. Had to cut the pipe, replace the fittings and install unions. This cost an extra $20. and half a day of time.

Changed the 4 steering column bushings on the tractor. Took the diff apart on the wagon to inspect the R&P and reseal the backing plates to axle flange and C clip eliminator housing, plus now rear shoes.

Got the last few pieces ordered that I need to put my welder back together.
Layed out my cuts on my '53 frame. Rebuilt an old floor jack. Flushed jack oil out of left eye. |

Grand daughter came by today, huged my neck, asked if I would look at her ford ESCAPE. Oil and filter change, replace rear brakes, rotate tires, fix coolant leak, another hug and shes gone. It was great having her around the shop for a number of hours today.

Yesterday and today I finished installing the cabinets. I also got around to unpacking some of the boxes. It is starting to look better with some of the boxes gone. I still have a ton of things to do.

Worked on my daughter's car. Put on a new battery terminal, replaced the PCV hose.
Next I broke open a tool bag I haven't opened in around 17 years. I always thought Blackhawk was junk and I had a "cheap" set I bought back in 1986-87. The 1/4 ratchet was nearly frozen and would barely move. Pulled it apart and greased it up, this thing is now by far my most smooth acting 1/4 I own - VERY NICE! The rest of the set is pretty nice and surprisingly not too much is missing from the whole set. Everything was loose out of the case when I open the bag. After that I cleaned up the mess.....got to keep what I have cleaned so far in my garage clean. Hopefully this week I will get pegboard up and the new box in (my dad is giving me his old box and I am getting my old box I had in high school back at the house......very cheap box, around 25 years old but in nice shape.

Finally hung up the liftmaster 3800 on my second door. I had a buddy hanging my doors while I was finishing the roof and he positioned the torsion bar too far over, so first I had to unwind and reposition....which involved cutting some rod for winding bars...which meant I had to clear a path to workbench...and then locate the tools for cutting the bars. Ive only had it for over a year now, now I see why I procrastinating so much.
Started cleaning and organizing stuff....again. Im not sure how I manage to drag out every tool I own, but it seems to be a regular event for me. Hauled a few things into the attic and a few things down from the attic

It took forever, but it worked pretty good! It has a few minimal rust spots below and I'm hoping to tackle those once the rest is done. Again, minimal touch up for preservation. I want to keep the original finish, but I also want to take care of the rust as well. Can't wait to see what it looks like when the whole thing is done

Last night I got started on cleaning out my girl's garage to make way for me moving in next month. She says I get carte blanch on the garage as long as I get her craft room build for her. Had to "explain" to her that I need to get the garage done first so that I have somewhere to build everything for the craft room. So far I think its working.

Built a work table, not as heavy duty as what I see here but I don't need it to be. I still did the fata$$ test and it did great. (fata$$ test was me jumping up on it, if it broke it would have been a little more flimsy than I wanted - result was it didn't budge.)

Opened the door, rummaged through one of the many many cardboard boxes in there trying to find my drill bits, sighed and gave up and bought a new set. I really need to find a day to get in there and start organising and unboxing after the move but the house takes priority right now until after christmas.
I did find a couple of pictures I took yesterday of my old single sectional concrete garage when we were all packed up for the move. Tidiest its been since we moved in! ![]()

Hung and organized another cabinet, (still getting moved in) moving in is the worst because you still cant find the right tool for the job! but the more I do the easyer it gets with less to trip over and more tools located for the next project

I haven't been on the forum in a while but I have been building the wife and I a new toy in between paying jobs. This will replace our 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee that we used to tow behind our coach and explore with.
This is my new daily driver and our Moab cruiser. I ought to start a build thread as I have been taking pictures along the way. Mike.

must be heavy, i have been wanting one for a while, top gear as a nice engine table on their show, what i really like about yours is you used the existing holes to mount the rods and pistons, i have not seen it done like that, i am on the hunt for a aluminum block that is a deal....in time i hope to have one like yours!

Finally a use besides scrap for an old Ford engine! So hard to find any Chevy junk, guess they just last forever. KIDDING!
![]() That table is friggin' AWESOME! I would have countersunk some casters for mobility. Guessing it'll leave a mark when someone has to move it in a pinch. ![]() Once again, awesome table! Despite our house being largely decorated with car stuff, one of these would be hard to get her to let me have as a coffee table.

Yeah I couldn't come up with a leg/caster design I liked so I just finish a glue-lam beam I had laying round and used that. Slides good on the carpet! Wife said only way I can keep it in the house is if it stays in the office

Well.................
Over the weekend I sorted and hauled to the dump three full size pick-up loads from the shelves and cabinets in the garage. I'll soon start a "Build" thread. This place (GJ) is awsome, I've got the fever.

installed a ventless heater.. 30k BTU with blower, and a 100lb tank sits outside the garage.
first time installing one of these. wasnt to bad drilling through the wall was quick work with a Hilti and a 36" bit installed a shut off valve right below the heater. fired it up and it works great!. puts out tons of heat. heated the garage to 70 degrees in no time

Well...wasn't on duty and didn't have any jobs scheduled so, i finally rebuilt my lawn mower carb (that hasn't ran in 3 years) it's amazing what ethanol gas does to things. Fixed the water leak coming inside on the neighbors Lincoln. Replaced the cam and belt on my honda pressure washer....pressure washed the deck, patio, concrete drive then started on rebuilding my Makita concrete saw...

All in preparation for insulation and close-in to start over my 12 day holiday break.
Emptied shelves, sorted and tossed. Boxed up the keepers. Disconnected 120 vac switching and outlets. Spent some more time at the drawing table playing with the new floor plan for cabinets and equipment. Looks like a bomb went off in there. But it's gotta' get worse before it gets better, right?

I reworked the front bumper on my 1954 R-132 International dump truck. It has a home built bumper that was poorly mounted. I pulled it off, straightened it, made up some bottom brackets and welded them on to the bumper. Primered it, bolted it back on and then painted it black. It has four more bolts in it now and is nice and solid and shiney.

Put lower control arm bushings on the driver's side of the '30 Chevy today. My dad did the passenger side a few weeks ago, said it took him almost 6 hours. I did it in 20 minutes, and that was taking my time. Used the lift when he didn't, I cut some 4x4's down so I could use them as a support to jack up one side. Our 4 poster doesn't have a sliding center jack to lift the wheels off the treadways.

Going to put new 7.50 x 16, or equalivalent, on front of F 350. Going to put take off tires on front of one tractor, plus swap one old front tractor tire on to a spare rim. The old spare is age cracked, never been used, that's the best way to keep from having flats is to have a spare.
Took leaking front tire off another tractor and took it to be fixed. 3 patches and it went flat by the time I got home, will take it back tomorrow. Drat thorns anyway. Tire place had to order 7.50 x 16s, will be bias tires at about $120, which is not too bad considering yesterday I paid $90 each for 2 tires for the Toyota tacoma. I've head that over the past year tires went up 25%. All this pretty much killed the day. KEH |

As to my day in the garage... Tinkered with my old Nissan 720. Gave up searching for my mityvac, so I spent the $35 for another (now I'll find my old one tomorrow). Replaced the rubber clutch hose, then sucked the clutch system dry and pulled new fluid through 'til it came out clean. Closed it up and it seems to work fine now. Parking brake isn't holding as strongly as I'd like, so I guess I should sort that out too. Maybe tomorrow.

I found a local hardware store shuttings its doors for the last time tomorrow. I went there today and loaded up on all sorts of screws, bolts, nuts, etc.
My garage is loaded with all sorts of goodies for those future projects. |

Re above post:
Finished swapping tires around and got new tires. The F350 sure drives better with new fronts. The tire that was flat again had a hole in the tube that he had missed. KEH |

My garage is more of a woodworking/tinkering than engine repair, here's what I made this past week for my Dad - a printer stand w/drawer.

Got some of the wall between what will be the machine shop/ office from the high bay shop framed up. My project for this week is to get it framed and the windows/doors installed.Maybe even insulated!
Its slow going because like all my other walls, its a 3 separate cavity , 7" wall with almost no thermal conection.

I finally found a little time to start some work on the "new" garage, my BIL was over for christmas with his family and he helped me move some cupboards around and unload the steel shelving from the back of my truck and we set it up in its temporary home at one end of the garage, eventually its going down the other end but theres lots of work to do before that happens. Had a long discussion about raising the eaves height and the choice is currently between raising the whole roof by a couple of feet or leaving the ridge height the same and just changing the pitch on the roof and raising the side walls. Either way the roof will be coming off and will be felted, re-slated, have a couple of skylights fitted and be insulated probably this summer and the two pairs of barn doors replaced by one larger possibly bi folding doors.
Today I hope to start unpacking boxes in there and putting stuff away. |

Spent 2 hrs. trying to get my tires off my truck. The bitch of it is that, last time I took them off I had the same problem. Only one was stuck good. I did use a Anti seize the first time but I guess not enough. Aluminum factory rims.

Spanner checked an MGB from top to bottom, gathered most of the parts to complete the car, made a cover to prevent any dust/grinding debris from sitting on the paint
Then started into restoring my folder Pics will be in my garage thread soon

I formed up a new cover piece for the cowl on my project MGB and got it fit up and tacked in place. When I widened the car I added a piece and then I tried filling in the windshield wiper holes and the defrost vent slits. All that welding on a low crown panel made for a lot of distortion so I just cut the whole piece out and made a new top on my English wheel. I was tacking it without a helmet because it takes a second or two for the shade to go clear and I can go much faster and more accurately if I just close my eyes. This is not a good practice but it is one I have done for years when fitting panels in place. The bad part this time is that I sunburned my eyelids because of the number of tacks and how close I was so I have wait a day before I can get back to finishing the welding.
