Good evening folks; I had another thread going and people were starting to ask....so I figured I'd start this one to talk about my shop/house....yep, I live here. 1900 square feet of shop, 1700 square feet of house. I pretty much cried when I signed the papers to buy it. I've always wanted to live in a gas station.

Some inside shots before I cluttered it up with my junk:

There's a third bay I didn't have a picture of still empty...plus another double-garage sized room between the counter area and the main shop. The door at the left side of the counter goes past the washroom and straight into my kitchen.

I'm in Magrath, Alberta...about 30 minutes north of the border.

The original building, the peaked roof portion, was built in 1908. It was a small double garage sized shop and about a third of the current counter/parts area. Kitchen, small dining room, one bedroom. I'm still trying to dig up the history that far back, but as early as 1947 (probably earlier) it operated under the umbrella of the Seventy Seven Oil Company, of Lethbridge Alberta. Old red and pale green paint suggests at some point in time it was a Texaco.

Seventy%20Seven.jpg

All Google leads me to so far is that the Seventy Seven Oil Company started in 1938 and eventually sold out to British American Oil.

For the bulk of the 77 era my place was owned and operated by Mr. Mick Heap. Around the mid '40s the counter area was expanded west (flat roof portion) and the two next bays were added (also flat roof). It is unknown when the third big bay to the east was added. At the time of the main expansion two more bedrooms were added as well as a large living room.

Some time in the late '50s Mick Heap sold to Jack Flaman, who continued to operate it under Seventy Seven until he passed away, likely in the early sixties. Enter Rodney Arndt. He purchased the property from Mr. Flaman's estate around 1966. The Seventy Seven brand was still in play, but it wasn't long before BA Oil ditched the name. I'm thinking it was around this time that Rodney changed the operation to 'Arndt Motors Ltd.' and simply just carried on with Gulf products.

Picture before the Arndt Motors sign went up:

If anyone can identify the pumps, I'd sure be grateful.

Rod ran the shop and raised a family, wife Margaret, 2 boys (Kim and Randy) and 1 girl, Gayla....until the things you'd expect to happen started to...in the late seventies the Rotary-Weaver hoist just about fell on him, so he stopped using it. (I'm refurbishing the lift.) In about 1980 Randy was paralyzed in an accident. Rod and Margaret were planning a renovation to build up, but now a wheelchair was going to be around, so they built out. An enormous living room was added to the south end of the house.

Eventually the kids moved on. Sadly Kim passed away before his time. Rod wanted to slow down, so he shut down the fuel pumps and had the tanks removed in 1995. Margaret passed away around 2001 and it was at this point that Rod closed the shop for good. The soil was remediated and given a clean bill of health in 2005. He lived here until his death in 2010.

I, a newly separated gearhead, was in need of new single-guy accommodations in May of 2011. I had know about this place but had never been able to pursue it, as it was something my ex would never have gone for. I immediately chased it and after what is likely a record-setting five and a half month negotiation, October 15 2011 I moved in. Then the fun started.

This is all I have for history....I'll keep building this thread as I learn/discover more. I've been lucky enough to be able to speak with Randy (Rod's son) and have got quite a bit of this from him. He's working on getting some more pictures gathered for me. I'll also update with the various projects I undertake....like refurbishing the lift...painting, redoing the siding, etc...I'll start other threads and link to them.....as much as I love BB767's thread...it gets to be quite a bit to wade through!

Thanks so much for your time, if you did in fact read all this!!

Until next post,

Mike

We are all envious of that purchase.......keep the pictures coming.

You referenced a Flaman in your history, would it be this family?

http://www.flamantrailers.com/

I know about them as they were a sponsor of one of my favorite TV programs.

http://www.cowboycountrytv.com/

Thanks for that B-A history link......there was one of those almost next door to where I grew up in Edmonton.

Congratulations! Sounds like you've got quite an adventure ahead of you; keep all of us in the loop. Will this be your place of business or simply your 'Sanctum Sanctorum' ("any secluded and mysterious place, and something that a person holds in the highest esteem")?

I'm thinking this is going to be one of those mega threads that come along from time to time on the GJ. So much potential. It will be interesting to see what you do with it.

Very cool place, and it seems like it's got quite a story to it. Not sure about your area, but perhaps there's a historical society that might be able to get you some older pictures of the building? The town I live in publishes a book every 5 years that has the complete written and photographed history of it, including old constructions, churches, movie theaters, gas stations, clock towers, etc. Maybe someone might be able to help you out with that.

Either way, you've done good by me. Any plans for a paint job that might reflect it's origins?

Cool place. I'm sure it will be a lot of work, but should also be a lot of fun. As far as the old gas pumps in the picture goes, I'm pretty sure they are Bowser pumps, the best I can tell. They were a fairly common pump, but make for a good looking pump when restored. Since your into all things gas station now, you MUST check out Oldgas.com. It will open up a whole new world to you.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words...there will definitely be more pictures as time goes by. Unfortunately I don't have the time or resources to refurbish this place as quickly as it seems some other folks do things around here....so it'll be a longer proces, but a process none the less. I'm in no rush.

Lemme see if I can answer some questions....

You referenced a Flaman in your history, would it be this family?

I"m sure there's a relation there....but I think it might be distant? Not sure....reading the Flaman Trailer history makes it sound like a coincidence, but the uniqueness of the name...hard to say.

Hello from Crossfield (2 hours north).

I wanna know what kind of car you have that can get from Crossfield to Magrath in 2 hours!! LOL! Crossfield is nice....if there was a piece of land available with the right zoning I'd build another place like this up there...

lilredex: I've been to Vintage Rods plenty more of a lurker tho....I even did some work for Rod himself [he might not remember] on one of his builds.

Will this be your place of business?

Well, it's zoned commercial. So yeah, that's part of the plan! I've got dreams of a part-time hot-rod/bike shop....gotta keep the day job for now tho.

I'm thinking this is going to be one of those mega threads that come along from time to time on the GJ.

I'd be honoured if this community thought that much of my run down shack...I'm afraid tho, that the speed I'll be able to move at people will lose intrest!

One more thing, congrats for dumping your ex and finally living the dream that she was holding you from...

Ha! Thanks! To be fair tho, she wasn't all bad. I was allowed my hobby just not allowed to move us to a gas station. We're both doing better now that we're separated. Everything is amicable and there's no trouble.

Any plans for a paint job that might reflect it's origins?

Yes! If I can find conclusive proof that it was a Texaco then I might go that direction, if not I'll take it back to the 77 days which was mostly white, but I might put a twist on it.

Bowser and Lord Baltamore....could be!! I'm hoping that when I get more pictures from last owner's son I'll be abled to get up close and tell for sure. So far the closest place I've found in appearance to the building is this place.

I'll be back with some more pictures of the shop, island, and some fun things I've come across so far...

Later!!

Mike

How is it possible that in the same post, you find a place with google maps and then ask how far away it is from somewhere. . . :lol_hitti

you know Google can do that as well. . .

Mike...thanks this write up...stumbled on it surfing the 'net. Mick Heap was my grandfather. He sold the shop just before I was born, so I really have nothing to add to your write-up, but it sure is interesting reading from someone who does.

Thanks again,

Found this reference thread for Seventy Seven Oil Company Ltd. I recently picked up this rain gauge.

Unfortunately, the British American Oil Dot Ca website now redirects to an Idaho Nail Salon. Try and figure that one out.

I'm going to do more digging.

Anyway, here is the piece.
