Default Disable inline images for quoted blocks of text

Would it be possible to disable inline images for quotes?

I.e., JoeBlow posts pictures of his toolbox in the toolbox thread. There's 8-10 images embedded in his post. Along comes DoodleHead and quotes JoeBlow's post, including the images, and makes a short comment. Then along comes Jawn reading the thread. Jawn admires JoeBlow's toolbox, then scrolls on down... but here's JoeBlow's toolbox again. Jawn has to keep smacking the pgdn button, pausing each time to see if he's reached the end of DoodleHead's post.

It's a bit annoying. Perhaps when you use the "quote" feature, images by default get replaced by something like (filename.jpg not quoted).

Or just try to better educate the less intelligent users. . . even ask them to go back and edit their post.

something needs to be done. . .it pisses me off on every forum I'm on.

I kind of have to agree on this. Sometimes you might want to quote an image, but I don't think it should automatically work that way. I see too many cases where it ends up just making a mess out of things rather than helping.

I would hate to see the feature disabled, because it's really helpful when you need to repost a picture in your quotes.

Educating the posters on how to edit their quotes so they don't repost every picture when they quote would be wonderful.

Maybe there could be a "cut and paste" section where we could copy & paste a "how to quote properly" and other common errors. Everytime somebody quotes an entire post and all the pictures, we could copy and paste a "Here's how you do it without copying all the pictures" and put it in the replies below the offending thread?

While that would be nice, wouldn't that only further clutter the thread?

How about a compromise? If you're going to quote a post, it would be slick if you could have a dialog open, or something similar, to ask if you want to include the photos in the quote. Default would obviously be no, so that it would take a conscious effort to quote the photos. No loss of functionality but it would definitely reduce the mindless/unintentional/etc. quoting of tons of images that annoys other users.

Yes, I don't want to see the ability to quote an inline picture to disappear, there's times it's useful to quote one of the pictures somebody posted to ask a relevant question. But if it's included by default, you get people quoting all 12 pictures just to say "Nice looking toolbox!"

Fact is, most board users are clueless to even the simplest of things. They make a post, 5 seconds later, they think of something they failed to say, so another post, 30 seconds later, another post, and so forth. People don't seem to realize that they can edit their post. Click the edit button on their post, and edit and submit it. Simple.

While it would be nice if folks had enough sense to not re post all those pics in a quote, few are capable of even simple editing.

yes, when someone quotes a whole mess of pictures already posted it gets annoying and even more so when multiple people do it.

i understand copying a picture to point something out in a quote but don't do all of them.

also, what else is annoying is when some members that upload pictures through the forum use the wrong type or setting and does not show the picture, instead i have to click on it and then it tells me to log in again to see the picture on a new tab. so if i hit the back space button it brings me to my password page i have to fill out again

Agreed 100%. This works well on other forums, and it is less trouble to scroll up and see the photos if you missed them in the original post than to scroll down through post after post of photo duplicates.

That's a noble enough quest, but it'll never happen. As Charles said, forums posters likely don't even know that they are doing it; if aware, they most likely couldn't care less.

It just gets old seeing full color glossies of JoeBlow's shiny new socket racks, in triplicate, with no new content other than "looks good " or "lol i have them to thy are awsom we have them on all are rigs".

Simplify this so that most users are less likely to clutter threads with duplicate images. Those who wish to see specific photos can easily go back to them or click the quoted hyperlink.

Most posts should be added by using the quick reply instead of the quote button.

Coming from a web developer, this is possible. Either through a plugin/extension for forum software, or you can set up some CSS rules on your browser end for a sort of custom styles heet. A little more thinking and a little less doing on the poster's part would help as well...

Many people (myself obviously included) default to the quote button since it lends context to a reply - case in point

Altering the (established and somewhat trivial) behavior of a large group of people, though theoretically possible, is not practical.

Adding content to a post that isn't necessary is just being lazy. Pretty much the same as the ones that clearly haven't read the thread, but feel the need to offer their opinion anyway.

Those people who haven't read, and just want to post, are exactly the ones likely to quote an entire block of photos and contribute nothing more than "I like that setup."

We have 118,000+ members here. Educating them all on forum etiquette just ain't gonna happen. I spend a lot of time with much smaller groups on other forums. 95% of their questions have already been addressed multiple times, so we try to get them to read the stickies and use the search function, but we may as well teaching rattlesnakes to waltz. The result is that every other post is a reminder of the rules. It doesn't make the forum a better place.

Far better just to make all pictures in quoted replies appear as links. This immediately solves the problem of visual clutter, and we don't have to waste time educating the unwashed masses on the most genteel way in which to communicate with others via that 'lectric-powered talkin' looky-box.

This thing needs a bump. Maybe someone who can do something about it will actually read it.

It doesn't do any good to try and educate them. To some, it just pisses them off when you mention it. I know that it is a Pet Peeve of E-Teks and he has tried to educate some as have I. People want to hit the "Quote" button and go on, and not take time to delete half the pics in that quote. I've seen some postings with a very large number of pics quoted only to have someone comment. "That looks cool"

Myself, I like the idea of the Quick Reply.

So, without all of us reporting the others' posts, how to we get a mod or admin in here to read this thread? So far we're basically preaching to the choir.

Why not have any quoted pics show up as links, or thumbnails? I don't know how easy that is to set up, but it's my idea.
