Stop looking... After taking a vote, there is now an entire forum dedicated to finding good stuff for cheap. You can now list your deals and find others here:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=36 Enjoy... And thanks for all of the feedback fellas. It is most appreciated. Ryan |

I think those who voted to change the hot deals thread didnt realize what they were going to get. Seems like it will be more complicated and drive people away from its former user friendly format. Just my thoughts.

If only there was a way to subscribe and get instant notification on the forum like there is the thread.
I like the idea of separate threads for each deal, so I can easily ignore the multiple posts of Sears/Grainger did/didn't send the ratchets. But that's totally outweighed by the fact that I can't get instant deal notifications. Add instant notification when a new thread is created in the hot deals forum, and it would be almost as useful as the hot deals thread. |

Why not leave the main forum page open in a separate tab or window and refresh it every so often? It's not instant and it's not an email, but its a way to easily keep up.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Nothing wrong with the "Hot Deals" thread. It was easy to get instant notification and see all deals on the same pages instead of having to click individual threads. I never saw the voting but I definitely would have voted to keep it how it was.

This is way better. Simpler? Maybe not, but deals aren't going to get lost in the chatter, and I'm sure there's a way to set up notifications.

I dont like the new format. They should have left it as is. But made a rule all posts must be a "hot deal" not comments bout hot deals

I thought it would be better, but I'm just not digging the new format. I felt better informed even with all the chatter (which I'll admit to occasionally adding to).

I'm not sure how you could feel any better or less informed - the information is the same. I think the number of separate threads really highlights just how much chatter there was. Now you can take part in the parts of chatter you are interested in.

This new format has saved me a ton of money. Maybe I just don't know how to use it properly and if anyone has figured it out please post.
With the old format I subscribed to the thread and every couple of days I would get an email of some hot deal and I would rush off and buy that product. Now I do not get notices of all the hot deals and I often forget to look at this new section of the forum so I do not see the deals and thus do not buy the products. The way I figure it in just about a month that we have had this new format I have saved enough money to retire a year earlier than I had planed ![]() If anyone is keeping track I vote for going back. I really appreciate that folks are willing to try new things in the hope of making the forum better but for me, I vote that we go back to the old way

Huge fan of the new format.... I now I don't have to wade through dozens of irrelevant posts about deals that I never cared about in the first place to see what's useful....
I thank you. My wallet hates you. |

I said it before the change, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Is there less chatter with the new format? No, people still reply to the threads. However, there is a HUGE amount of less deals being posted. It's easier to post a link in a thread with the quick reply, but not many are going to make an entire thread. Is it a lot of work? No, but obviously people aren't doing it.
It wasn't a big deal to scroll down and by the regular posts. The old way was much better and I was never a fan of changing something that didn't have a problem to begin with.

You can subscribe to the entire forum section and it will email/alert you any time a new thread is started or someone posts in it.
Personally I was against the change but I like it now. I really can just ignore the deals I have no concern about, and I dont have to read through the discussions about deals I dont care about. Before I had to skim through them to make sure I wasnt missing a deal.

I find the opinions here interesting. Do you really think there are fewer deals posted, because of one extra click? I think it FEELS like there are less deals posted, because there's so much less noise. The old thread could easily go through 3 pages of "I got my shipment," "They cancelled my order of $150 worth of shtuff for $3.50," and "Sears is Made In China now" messages between deals.
I'd really like to hear from anyone who had a deal, that would have posted it before, that won't post it now.... |

yup... used to post deals i came across all the time
then all the pedantic demands came of how exactly you were to post a deal came out especially by people who never bothered to post one deal. each demand was more pedantic and ludicrous in the rules section in my opinion, as always, the takers, not the contributors rule the day so I can't be bothered to post any deals now the old way thread was better - the constant chatter made it alive Last edited by lennoxlennox; 06-25-2012 at 09:23 AM. |

I think i've bought maybe... 3 things since the format changed. I used to buy 3-5 things a week with the old format. I mean... a whopping 3-5 new threads a day created? Used to be days where the deal thread would grow 10 pages in one day, 10-20 deals. Yes, the chatter could get annoying, but it's pretty easy to deal with it if becomes too much. (It's simple, just hit the "back" button on your browser.) I'm not mad either way. New format is good, content sucks. Old format sucked a bit, content was awesome. 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. |

Well if people are refusing to post "hot deals" they find because of all the "extra" work involved with creating a new thread, that just seems kind of lazy to me. I personally find the new format better. At various times when it was discussed before the change, I was on the fence and could see the pros/cons of each.
As time went by though, I grew more in favor of the new format and welcomed it once it arrived. I find it to be far more beneficial and much easier to wade through deals that I may or may not be interested in. Mindless chatter about deals is going to happen, regardless of how many rules are put into place...it's just far too difficult to enforce. But, in my opinion, this new format is better because now I don't have to wade through 4 pages of chatter to see the next deal. I simply open a thread b/c the deal looks promising or intriguing and move onto the next thread. To each their own. |

Are you people serious with the fewer amount of deals? There are 135 individual threads in the 38 days that the section has been opened. That's an average of 3.5 deals EVERY DAY! Now, I don't know about you but the Hot Deals Thread was starting to go dry for a while. Days would go by without a single deal posted, just useless chatter. At the most, I would see 1-2 new deals a day in the thread and the rest would be useless chatter. As more deals were posted, confusion would follow followed by more comments and wasted time sifting through "hey, I got my ratchets today! They're great!" and then "Really, which one's did you get?" followed by "Damn, I wish I would have got those!" and then the "Yea, they normally go on-sale at this time of year, yada yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, "

I don't think people are posting less because they don't like it, I think it's more that it's not in your face as much anymore. I keep forgetting its down the screen a bit, actually it's right off the bottom, so I don't see it unless I scroll down there. Before, it would pop up in the main forums all the time, so it was more visible

From the forum you can see every deal and while that is nice, there is way less deals being posted. I would come home from work and have to go back ten pages in the thread to see all the deals. Now we're lucky to get a couple a week. It was a pointless change. No one complained about it in the thread so where did all this distaste for a thread come from? Someone said change is good? Ok, Mr. President. Quote:

A couple of hot deals a week? We're doing about 25 a week by my calculations.

I like the new setup. It took a little while to get used to the change but now I find it better organized and easier to find deals. It really doesn't take any longer to get into the forum than it was to find the thread.
Thanks Ryan for being open to trying something new. Hopefully it works out in the long run! |

Not a fan of the new format but it sure would be more useful to me if the hot deals link was posted right under the sticky's link in general tool disussion. I think that would make for easier navigation. Just my opinion.

well... "smart guy", you were the one who was calling people lazy. (yet you had not posts) funny isn't it... people are lazy for not posting or posting to your liking.... and by implication of your post above... not only are they lazy, the mere fact they are posting means they "don't have a life outside of posting hot deals" yet for someone who doesn't have any time to find and post deals, you have time to flip through them and look to benefit from the deals and criticize those who "are too lazy too post". If that wasn't bad enough, you tell us your time is too valuable or I guess more important in value than our time and insult those who you are benefiting from by implying they have no life :And that my friend, highlights the mindset why I don't post any hot deals anymore - ps - it's not because I'm lazy, I guess it's as you say, I must have developed a life outside of posting hot deals. ![]() By the way... don't take what I'm saying too seriously - the point being, those who are posting have earned the right to criticize and make the constructive changes... all others... are just the peanut gallery - when they lead by example.... I'll follow, until then, they should just be quiet and watch the show. Last edited by lennoxlennox; 06-27-2012 at 11:33 AM. |

And the beauty of the forum, is that everyone is privy to post, regardless of whether or not they've posted in the new format or not, this is after all a forum for discussion and exchange. But, by your own logic, because I haven't posted in the new format, I'm not entitled to post my opinion...mmkay. And again, if anyone takes my stating that the actions seem lazy, to heart, then they're entirely too sensitive. And again, through your own logic, it seems that it is my duty to take time out of the day to search for hot deals and post them? I can tell any type of discussion with you will go nowhere, since your entire basis for rebuttal in the first place, is based off the fact that your opinion doesn't line up with mine. So again, don't get your feathers so ruffled.

Your not going to beat this deal. Normally the piece kits are full of fluff, this is full of ratcheting wrenches, hex bits and some other good tools.

What about PM notification? I am on a smart phone so some things are a bit different. It would be nice to be notified only when a Hot Deal is posted, then maybe another thread for The Deals Discussion thread.
