I currently have a 10x12 brand new door with rails and all required hardware, (both torsion springs, drums, shaft, rails...)

I need to get the door up to 12' but would like to remove one panel to get a 10x10 door, but I figured out that I'll need to buy new high lift drums to replace the ones coming with the 10x12 door.

Is there anything else I need to change ? The door (10x10) will need to get up for a bit less than 2 feet and then will go to the horizontal rails as usual...

Btw, I can't use the 10x12 door with all panels since a H-Beam prevent the door to go trough at 12 feet celling... and 10 feet door is just fine, so the rails are welded on the H-Beam and the door stop just before it...

Thanks for your help,

Maxime

Yes in order to properly balance, you'll need new drums, and probably springs as well.

The springs are brand new ones from a 10x12 door and I've seen some charts on the net and it seems like it's ok for the application.

My concerns are mostly related with the high lift drums...

Your internet charts mean nothing, the combination of door weight, drums and floor to shaft center - determine the springing. Thus you wont find it on a internet chart...

You will need new cables too. What type of door is it? What size springs did it come with? I can almost guarantee you that you will need new springs as well, as was stated earlier.

I ran a few numbers based on weights of one of our doors. For a 10x12, it has a door weight of 254 lbs. For standard lift, it would use a pair of 234-2-41 springs. In a 10' high configuration, that door would drop to 214 lbs. Now, assuming you are using the same 12' high track, that is going to give you 32" of high lift. Using a 400-54 drum, you would need a pair of 234-2-43 1/2 springs. You could use your current springs, but you would need add about 25 lbs of weight to the door, preferably not all in one place. In addition, you would need approximately 24" longer cables for the High Lift.

AndyL and John, thanks for your help, it's really appreciated !

So far, I've tryed to find the exact spring I actually have, but there's no number on them, so measuring 10 and 20 coils, I figured out that its 0.250 wire, 39 inches and the inside diameter is hard to tell, but seems to be 2" 5/8.

Will get my 2 400-54 drums tomorrow, my friend only had 575-120 on hands. That said, By what John said, the actual spring might not be appropriated for the intented use.

Is it a garaga door and if so - how thick? That's their neck of the woods, I've got a proper weight chart for their hardware here somewhere...

Something on the spring you listed doesn't add up. If you have a pair of 250-2 5/8-39 springs, you have a door sprung for approximately 285 lbs. With the section weights you have, you must have a door weight of about 200 lbs.

What model of door do you have?

I just installed the new drums (400-54) and now the door is working almost as it should, I need to do some rails adjustements and maybe the springs aren't exactly what's needed... I'm not sure... it's pretty much what it should.

I'm able to balance the door at arround 50% opening, when the door is free, it will open by itself for let say 6 inches and the last 8 inches or so are a little bit harder to lift, but really not that much...

Finally, here's some updates on my garage door. I made my homeworks and come out with something that's now working properly. I should have done this at first, but while I don't usually try to save some time that way, I did on this one.

Here's my door, a 10x10 Garaga door now with custom high lift rails I've done. :)

I did some plans before and after high lift rails : (Celling height isn't correct on thoses plans)
