Part 2:
I have a set of SK deep/shallow metric/standard 1/4" drive chrome sockets. I recently threw them in a can of diesel to clean them up. After they were all shiny and clean it was apparent I had some problems with chrome. The set is 6/7 years old so it's definately from the pre-bankruptcy SK.
A few sockets were peeling like an orange. I could hook my fingernail a chrome edge and peel it off in strips. There were many more sockets that had one or two small chips. And a handful more sockets that looked iffy on the drive end near the corners of the square.
I ended up putting 16 sockets in a box and shipping them off to SK. I received TWO packages in return. Seven sockes were denied warranty and sent in a separate package from the 9 sockets that were replaced.
The seven sockets denied warranty were said to we worn and not the result of manufacturing defects. I have no problem with their assessment. I sent back ALL sockets that I found even the slightest issue with.
I do have an issue with turnaround time. It took almost six weeks to get the sockets back to me. Here's my warranty return timeline:
6/10 Package shipped.
6/13 Package arrives at SK
7/10 I called SK to check status. I spoke to a CSR who had my return right at her fingertips. She said some of my sockets were defective and others were worn and would not be replaced. She also said she had to discuss which sockets would be replaced with engineering. Clearly she was familiar with my claim, so it must have been sitting on her desk for a while. From a business standpoint it seems inefficient and wasteful to spend so much time reviewing a simple warranty claim. Look at the sockets, make a decision and ship them out. The UMC of 1/4" drive sockets has got to be pretty low so it shouldn't take additional approval to ship new ones. Anyway...
7/19 Two packages arrive at my house. One with 7 returned sockets, one with 9 new sockets.
