I have been following garagejournal for some time now. It is so nice to see that there are still so many innovators and craftsmen out there. From these people and posts I have gotten so many ideas for improving my own things. After seeing so many single car garages lately I figured I should finally start my own thread. So hear it is! I'm calling it FTBR Garage which stands for Fix, Track, Break, Repeat!

A little background: Being a car/track lover, when my wife and I bought a house last may I knew that I was in trouble with a one car garage. We love the neighborhood and the house is awesome, so I said let make it the best one car shop I can. The garage is mainly be used for mechanical work, but often is used for woodworking, some metal fabrication, refinishing (media blasting, painting, and powdercoating), etc. etc. I am also utilizing some space in the basement, and have a small 8x10 shed in the backyard that I use for storage ;).

I don't have all my pictures ready so I decided to post this teaser. This picture is from a couple of weeks ago when I received a very special package! I have bunch of pictures of the build progress and will post them up shortly. Obviously I have way more plans in the future, but until then enjoy

Some pictures from when we moved in.

Compressor is now in the basement with a hose running up to this fitting. Really saved on space! It is very quiet in the garage while it is running, not so quiet in the basement, oh well.

One of the cool things about this bench design is that when it is folded down they are perfect for holding your beverages!

The best part of finishing this small bench is that I could use it now to build the second one!

On to the blast cabinet. It was originally a vapor honing cabinet, the was old but working. I did not have the capacity of air to run it as a slurry blast so I just converted it to a siphon dry blast. The best part is they were throwing it away so it was FREE!!! Anyway on to the pictures.

https://sphotos-a.**.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/58810_10101200208010411_593301674_n.jpg

It's a MAC Tools LFMR6!

The R32 is the first one to go up! I didn't take any pictures when I built the ramps. Basically 2x4's and 1x12 pine board.

Shortly after I took this picture I dropped my diff, replaced output flanges, installed turner rear adjustable control arms, M3 trailing arms with new bearings, Turner M3 RTAB limiters, M3 half shafts. So much easier with the car in the air!

Looks great! If you don't mind me asking, what is the cost on one of those lifts? I've been considering getting something similar for my future project. Great idea with the wooden ramps to drive the car up onto the lift. Nice work with the folding workbenches as well.

Love the R32! Any more pics of the E36?

I like those way better too, but those aren't free! I have a bunch of the L brackets from the PO. Thank you for mentioning it though, because I looked at the picture again and realized that when I get around to painting/staining the shelves and workbenches I should paint the brackets too!

I don't mind you asking! I work at Stanley Access Technologies (Stanley Black & Decker, MAC Tools is part of SBD) so I got employee pricing! Given the LFMR6 is a Challenger Lift MR6 that is rebranded as an over priced MAC Tools lift. So it wasn't a awesome deal, but it was the same price as a Bend-Pak MD6-XP and I figured might as well put the money back into the company. Shipped to my door with a lift gate truck was $1986.28

If I didn't work for SBD the Bend-Pak would have been $1,930.00 shipped to my business. FYI

Thank you and of course!

A little background if you want. It's a short video of the rebuild. Basically sucked up a gallon of water in a parking lot and bent rod #3.

Thanks for the info! It looks like a superb lift. Seems like a great value for the price.

Love the E36! Thanks for the pics. I recently rebuilt my Audi's motor as well after blowing the stock turbo.

Do you have any plans to paint and/or add more lighting to your garage space? It seems a little dim. Plus a fresh coat of paint always makes things seem nicer looking :)

Yes there are many plans for the future ! I have a bunch of small little projects, but the big ones are:

Recess the lift 4" into the floor eliminating the need for the ramps.

Install a sink and water hose reel near the garage door.

Run air to both sides of the garage and into the workshop. Install reels.

Fix the insulation and sheet rock the workshop.

Finish painting the walls and paint the ceiling.

Refinish the Garage Door and hardware.

Add probably 4, 2 bulb florescent to the ceiling.

I would love to vault the ceiling.

Hard line a heater into the house gas line.

Install a window in the work shop, replace the window in the garage (it's rotting), install some windows in the top of the garage door.

etc. etc. etc.

When will I have time to do all of this??? :headscrat

I found a picture of what the Vapor Honing cabinet looked like before I took it apart. I still have to take one of what it looks like now finished.

I would at some point like to take it apart and paint the whole thing but that is a little bit down the road. I have a bunch of work I have to do before that.

Thank you, and the MK1 Cabriolet is my sisters car. It's a long story but to shorten it up, her X though he was a mechanic and ripped off the head, took off the dash, cut some fuel lines :headscrat. The thing is that I had the car running before that. So now basically she asked if I could "redo her's like mine". I will eventually swap a new turbo motor, 1.8t, 2.0t, etc., get it mechanically sound, rattle can the outside so it doesn't rust, and let my sister worry about cosmetics.

The newest addition to the family! I didn't know this is what I was going to be using my lift for. It was very easy to get the tractor off my fathers F-150.

As I said in my original post I do also have a shed that is part of my organization. This is essentially where I store a bunch of used/spare/to sell/to refurbish parts. Along with all my outdoor equipment. Scored the file cabinets from my father in law for free!

I finally had some time this Saturday to clean up the garage. I moved a shelf and added another so that I can stand straight up when changing a wheel on that side of the car and I don't have to worry about banging my head. (Sorry about the crappy phone pic)

If you notice all the fluids on the workbench. I did the DSG, Haldex, Rear Diff, and Oil change on the R32 yesterday. I made the 2 tools so that I could pump the fluids in. So much easier when you have a lift!

Why didn't you deepen the hoist to make it strictly to the floor level?
That's what Jack Olsen did - It looks great!

It's on the to do list. I had a bunch of work that need to be done right away and I didn't want to wait 28 days for my full concrete strength. I think that will be a end of the summer type of job. After the track season!

Staying true to the FTBR name, I had a track day on July 1st in the pouring rain (see picture below!) and at about 100 mph on the front straight my voltage light came on, then I went to turn in and my power steering was gone, then of course my water temp spiked. I got back into the paddock asap and saw my belt was completely gone (running the water pump/fan, alternator, and power steering pump). I was a little dumbfounded by this since it was a new belt. So I ended up finding a new one from one of the guys at the track (Thank you AutoTechnic!). When I went to install it I notice that the idler pulley had failed!!! So now the car is on the lift, radiator out, pulleys off, ready to be cleaned up and replacing a bunch of stuff, "while I'm in there."

Yes that used to be my belt, found it when we were taking the car off the tow truck!

So normally to remove the fan I would just put some tension on the belt and use my adjustable wrench. Since the belt is non existent I needed a tool to hold the pulley. I could have just bought this one for $25 + shipping (http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2593813/ or I could just make this one in 5 minutes out of a piece of scrap stock aluminum. Though I should share.

Very nice e30! It sits just right, what suspension are you running? Got to love a clean AW sedan! The S50 is staying in the car  hopefully! I will be parting out the S52 that I have, I already sold the crank :rocker:. That will fund more projects!

Just to give a little update. The Bimmer is in the process of being put back together. Just waiting on the arrival of some intake manifold gaskets. In the interim I made a solid aluminum idler pulley from a piece of stock so that I wouldn't have this problem ever again. I though GJ would appreciate a little machining.

Just a little update. I have not been able to really do anything with the garage because life is to crazy and unfortunatly I have to work on things in the garage rather than work on the garage. I did however make this sign to hang up. It's milled into a piece of aluminum. Sorry for the **** quality picture. I will put up a better one once I hang it up.

Please excuse the mess but, I just wanted to give a update. I picked up a couple of things for my garage. The first is a 9" South Bend Lathe built in Shipped in 11/3/1938 to Watertown Undergarment Corp., in Waterbury, CT. I though the history was pretty awesome. The second is that I picked up a Modine PA75AB Natural gas heater. When I brought the lathe into the garage I said well why don't I knock down the wall in between the garage and workshop. The opening was on 28.5" so I couldn't really fit my lathe into the workshop. So I did that, then I decided well I would love to hook up the heater, when I decided to do this, I decided to redo the electrical in the workshop, in order to do that I had to rip down the walls. The wiring was completely *** backwards, There were 2 switches to the light in the workshop. On by the wall and one by the door to the outside, I could literally hit one switch with one are and one with the other.

So now I have 3 circuits going to the workshop. 1 15A for the ceiling socket/light, 1 15A for future exterior light outside the door (hopefully installing some barn lights soon!), and I have one 20A for the heater and switch and all the outlets (I'm deciding whether I want to just run another circiut for 220V or if I want to do a sub panel and split it there.)

I also took down the platform and the shelves that were full of parts. Went through and threw out a bunch of parts and things that have been laying around to long.

Notables:

Running 3/4" black iron pipe to the heater. I've made it to the garage, but I still have to do the exhaust vent, and finish the piping in the garage.

In the old opening between the garage and workshop the opening was 28.5" because they just cut the stud and didn't do any reinforcement/header.

Whoever did the insulation did a horrible job leaving huge gaps and not stapling anything. So now I have to fix it.

Plans for the immediate future:

Finish the gas piping, wrap up the electrical, heater exhaust vent, vent blast cabinet, clean up/finish insulation, sheet rock, paint, hang shelves along the ceiling (I bought 10 of these Uline bins to use for storage http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-133BL/Totes-Plastic-Storage-Boxes/18-x-13-x-12-Black-Space-Age-Totes?model=S-133BL&RootChecked=yes), etc. etc.

Thanks for looking!

Forgot to post this one of my new switches and receptacle. The bottom switch is for the outlet where the heater is going to be plugged in and the top is for the light.

looks like your doing a good job with the limited space you have
keep up the good work

Thank you! It has been like one of those sliding puzzles just trying to maneuver. I have to move 3 things just to get to one. Well worth it, I finally went through all my parts and filled 3 55-gallon drum contractor bags with garbage. I have some big plans for storage once I get the sheet rock done.

So phone pics of the progress. I hooked up the electricall the other day and now have started to put up the drywall, what a difference that makes in appearance. When I'm done with the joint compound I will take some good pictures with a good camera.
