I've been searching for the best route to have instant viewing capabilities for my detached garage. I already have a wireless alarm system with the main unit at my house. I figure I need a dvr/camera system and a computer in my garage- It's 60ft behind my house. I could use 6 camera's just for the garage. I also would like to have a few at my house, might need another system for it. There are a lot of threads out there, just wondering what the folks in a similar situations have done to accomplish this and not break the bank. Thanks...

I installed a system from Zmodo

Installation was much easier than I expected and the system has operated flawlessly. I power mine from a left over 12V backup power supply (from ATT Uverse).

There are several internet cameras you can get. One of the things to look for is if the camera provides you with DNS so you can access it remotely. The other option is to just have it on your existing wireless system and store locally.

I have a Lorex setup...nice system

How far is the garage? Are we talking feet or hundreds of feet?

I have a Digimerge hard drive system for my business with 8 cameras - 4 inside, 4 outside. Using their internet program, CMS-DH, I can monitor them 24/7 on my droid (or any smart phone) or any computer. It's pretty cool. I think mine will record for a month straight before overwriting.

My garage is 60ft behind my house, I can connect to the internet through my wireless router. Does the Zmodo Dvr connect wirelessly or do I need to hook directly to a computer? Thanks for the help!

It needs a hard connection to your network to have remote viewing. But you could use multiple routers to network your complex. I'm not a networking genius but i know in this day in age anything is possible. I would just bury a Cat5e cable then there is a permanent hard line.

We used stuff from X10.com -- Airsight cameras that run on POE set up to monitor 2 cameras and added some switches to control functions off the cell phone or anywhere we have web access - cheap enough, easy to set up and decent picture - even the night (IR) works well enough.

More expensive than other posts recommend here at $699. Q-See at Costco - 4 HD cameras, 1 Ter. DVR. This system provides the resolution to distinguish a cow from a human at noon or midnight; also provides email alerts with image snapshots, and remotely accessible event video. Nice iPhone app.

You do need high bandwidth Internet connection, either direct ethernet to your router, indirect ethernet via PowerLine, or perhaps indirect via WiFi. I have no experience with the latter.

I installed a 4 channel setup from Night Owl. Even with one camera upgrade and a UPS it ran me under $600. Best money ever spent!

Two days after setting it up, received an email that there was movement in my shop and a snap shot of two aholes loading stuff into their truck. Called the cops. My coworkers and I watched the two clowns get arrested on the live video feed from my phone. I love the that phone app!!

Dropcam works great. I'm in the process of converting my carport into a garage, and I am using it to keep an eye on some tools that I don't feel like bringing in every night.
