I found and old vise on a bench under an old shed and would like to know what it is. The owner is one of these junk hoarders who wont sell anything and will never use it either. I took some pics and will post later.

The vise has a no.44 on one side. The back is rounded like a wilton bullet but the sliding jaw is square. Not much else i can tell you other than money cant buy it.

Heres the pics. Its sad to know it will probably never be used ever again. Has been sitting there for years along with tons of other things being left to rot.

OK The only way i could do the pic was make it my avatar. Copy it and enlarge if you need to. The outer jaw has some design on it i believe.

Jeez, thats a fairly rare Chas Parker vise. It should be marked 474 or 474A. The jaws operate and the rear drum can be rotated to get a variety of working angles on whatever you have clamped in the jaws.

It looks rough but find a way to get that thing home now.

I think it's an old Parker. get a decent pic from the front, the collar holding the screw in should have Parker on it if so.

I will go back and look next week. The family who owns it WILL NOT sell anything at any price. There are dozens of old 40s thru 70s cars all rotted down under sheds and in the bushes in cluding a GTO and a TB ird. That vise will rust away where it sits. No amount of money on earth will get it and it will never be used again.

If i can ever post pics i will show you the cars. You wont believe it.

WHy not offer them a trade of an equally crusty and old vise? They aren't out anything and hopefully both parties would be happy

These folks dont trade. Once something belongs to them its theirs for life. They wouldnt sell you a rusty nail for a million cash dollars.

I own a Parker 474. That one is marked 449. It definitely looks like a Parker. I would see what size the jaws are. My 474 has 3.75 in. I think Mohawk Dave might know, he is trying to find old Parker like that.

With the picture as a guide you should be able to make a good dummy vise out of wood.
Paint it up to look weathered, cover it with dirt and switch them Indiana Jones style.
Good luck.

Had a guy in town who was like the family that owns that vise. Always bringing stuff home but would never part with a single thing. After he passed away his family held a huge garage sale and honestly most of the stuff they were pulling out of the basement and barn was useless junk when he brought it home and decades of neglect had made it barely even worth taking to the scrapyard.

He did have a few nice old vintage machines but his family had them priced the same as a brand new modern machine even though they needed a ton of work to be used again.

Eventually a huge dumpster from the scrapyard showed up in the yard and I'm pretty sure the family scrapped everything for pennies because nobody would pay their insane prices and they would not negotiate at all.

It was sad. Sometimes I think these people collect stuff just so they can say "I have it and nobody else ever will" serious control issues......
