Freebie vintage Sears table saw

My neighbor was throwing away/donating a vintage Sears Craftsman table saw. He offered it to me for the price of "free" and i jumped on it. It looks to be mostly there. It does need the pulley and key on the motor side, but other than that everything works and nothing is bent/broken. There was some surface rust from sitting in my neighbors yard for a few months, but nothing major.

I was hoping one of the pros on here could help me dating this machine and tell me a bit about it. Here are some pics with the model and serial number:

lots of great information about old craftsman and other equipment at http://vintagemachinery.org/

the first 3 numbers on craftsman equipment indicates the OEM manufacturer. In your case 113 is the relevant number. Cant remember off the top of my head, but I'm 99% certain it's the same as my band saw. It's the same style as that so I'd put it in the early 70s or so. google 113.299040 and you'll get a lot of hits

Probably made by Emerson Electric - they we're the domestic Harbor Freight of tools at that time.

If you want to laugh look at the plastic housing guard over the vee-belt and look and see if the top part of that plastic guard has any missing plastic in the width of a vee-belt.

What would happen is that the guard by no fault of it's own would drop down and touch the running belt which in turn would melt the plastic making it look like a dado cut. I think it must have been a flaw on all those cheap guards.

Nice glasses

Good score for the price. Is it the best table saw out there? no; but it can be made to be a good useable saw. Nice that it has the miter gauge and fence.

You can get a pulley from the surplus center. Shoot for ~4000RPM at the blade arbor. Find a good belt locally.

Take a new razor blade (at a shallow angle) and penetrating oil to the table to remove the rust. I would personally remove the belt guard (and possibly blade guard :shocking:

) and place it in the trash. Woody 73 elaborated on that.

All in all you will have a pretty good home shop table saw. The worst part is going to be the fence.

I have an old Cman tablesaw very much like that. I also have the miter gauge, blade guard, and fence that you have there. It's all very usable - even the fence :beer:

Pull the whole thing apart, clean it up, then get a solid how-to on setting up and dialing in a table saw.

Since there's no pulley on the motor, wonder if it came with the flex cable drive? Was like a big speedo cable. What does the driven end of the arbor look like?

There is a pulley on it.

I actually ordered a pulley and new belt from Sears last night ($50).

I pulled the motor apart today and blew all the old saw dust out of it. Put her back together and fired her up for the first time in many years...smooth and quiet. I also printed out the owners manual. From the little bit I read today it seems there are many adjustments to make on the table.

Does anyone have a good thread they can point me to on setting up a table the correct way?Thank you again for the help guys.

Next: Need a vintage drill press to match...off to craigslist i go!

Jack, There is a pulley on it.

Must be under the infamous plastic guard. I'd just never actually seen one still on a saw. That's the first thing most throw away for the reasons woody73 mentioned.
