Picked up this Reed vise....jaws are 3 1/2" wide. Says PAT DEC 24 1912 PAT AUG 11 1914 REED MFG CO Erie PA USA.

The bottom is threaded. Damn thing is HEAVY! Am I missing a swivel base? I rescued this bad boy from the scrapper. Any idea what these things are worth as is? No cracks that I can see. Handle is a little bowed. Any help would be great.

I believe that your vise had a small base that attached to the top of the bench with grooves to engage the lugs on the outside edge of the mounting flange of the fixed jaw casting. A large stud was permanently screwed into the threaded boss in the bottom of the vise and extended out the bottom of the bench, with a large washer and big wing nut to allow the vise to be swiveled. This was a common design in the early days, and probably the first version of a swivel base.

Nice vise! Glad you saved it.

A base could be made by cutting a circle from 1/2" plate to match the vise, drilling a hole in the center to match the boss, and cutting grooves to engage the lugs. You would also drill and countersink a few holes and attach the base to the bench with flat head wood screws. Then a threaded rod, large area washer (plate washer) and a nut under the bench to hold it together.

Or post a wanted in the unofficial vise parts thread here.
