Garages, machines, and talent

Hey guys......I'm kicking something around and want to see what sort of interest others would have in doing it. If I would come up with some sort of a spreadsheet with a list of machines on it, would you be willing to put up your name, what machines you have, and what capabilities you have, and a State only, no town location?

The reason I ask this is that although it is summer and everyone should be out in the garage, (or banging the neighbors wife ) I think with as many members we have now, there is a lot more activity in the Fab Forum. With that, there are many members that don't have a lathe, mill, grinder, and so on, but at times need something made. If they knew who to contact, or knew who had what, then they could get in touch with a member or two and get their parts fabricated. I'm still thinking about the spreadsheet and how to post it up so ones could get their name on it. I may have to check with (well hell..a case of CRS at the moment) the member who made the spreadsheet up about the garages, with the size and so on that you can search for. I'll remember it later.

If the members would at least list the State they are in, excluding "confusion", then other members in the same state would more than likely PM the member that is close, or if close enough meet them in person, or even mail or ship things back and forth.

As it stands now, the members may know one or two with appropriate machinery to get something done, but don't want to ask for them to do something. Some may not want to ask other members for help in something because they figure that "he wouldn't want to machine something for me".

And don't get me wrong, I'm not implying that ANYTHING be done for free. What is discussed in PM's is your own private business. Any monetary discussion is up to the members in private. But if you want to throw a freebie to someone, that's okay too!!! :spit:

But I wanted to toss a line out to see what I can catch, and if it's worth it, I'll get with the Mod(s) or Ryan and see if we can get it made a sticky post.

Just like myself, I have a mill, lathe, press, shear, but if I need a piece precision ground, I don't know who to ask without just walking into the room and shouting it out to everyone. If there was a list, I could look, see who's got a surface grinder, PM the member to see if he (or she) would be interested in a little side work for some coin, and be done. I would MUCH rather exchange money between members, or even Barter between members if one would choose, than to take my chances with some shop around the next town or whatever.

Think it over guys and let me know what you think. If you think it would be a good idea, then I'll figure out some sort of spreadsheet or chart. Or if you have any ideas to add to it or take away from it, we'll consider every and all ideas and we will move forward. :rocker:

Who's with me?

I'm in Kevin.
My list is pretty short.
Access to a forge and two Little Giant Power Hammers. (Think damascus steel here, billet form or barstock. And the option of surface ground. )
Burr-King belt grinder.
Baldor Buffers.
All this equipment is actually in Central Illinois too , not at my home. But I do have quick access to it.

I'm down. You could also add in zip code or county, which would narrow it down but still give a location people could search. I'm in SoCal. Kevin...I think on google maps you can do se sort of location map and add info and locations. I've seen it done on other boards I'm on for various things.

Edit: Found it. Go to Google Maps, click on my places, create map. You'll get a box for a title and a description and right above that, there is a link that says collaborate. Click on that and it gives you a couple more options. Like I said, I've never done it, but I've seen the results and I think it would be ideal for what you want to do. People can just find their location on a map and see where others are on the map. If you use generic locations, you can still stay somewhat anonymous and use your screen name for your location. Then, people can locate you through the board.

Bridgeport Mill
Logan 11" lathe
Drill press
Big fab table
Portaband with Swag table
Miller 180 mig
50T press
Cold cut chop saw
Hypertherm 1000 plasma cutter
Soon to have done CNC plasma table
Clamps, grinders, etc related tools.

Great thread. But this is going to be complicated to go through. If we had a format where you could not just list machines, but what capabilities you have for production, that might make more sense. That makes it even more complicated. We need an online spreadsheet where people can enter their own data.

My garage shop is just a-building and not worth mentioning yet. My personal capabilities are very minimal.

But I work in a 1 1/2 man (I;m the 1/2 man) machine shop that can do many things including aircraft production. We share space with a large grinding machine and we know a network of small shops with different capabilities.

That's what I plan on doing if there is a lot of favorable response, although I may have to recruit some help

I know myself that I would send some items to others that I don't have the capabilities of doing myself yet.

Kick up any ideas that anyone may have

This is SO a good idea.
Even commercial shops are NOT jacks of all trades, nor do they have all capabilities.
One of the most important capabilities, that the guy I work for has, is knowledge of all the other shops in the area. When he gets a job that calls for, say, laser etching as part of the work, he knows who to price it with. He can then quote the job and sub the laser work out. And if he gets a job that is too big for us, he knows who to get help from. Or sometimes, if it is work he doesn't want to do, for one reason or another, he will either sub it. or give it away entirely. Sometimes you have the capability but just don't like that kind of work and prefer to do other things.

So, my little home shop has (Operable and ready for work) the following:

Kalamazoo horizontal bandsaw Model 610
Buffalo floor model drill press
Numerous Sears block grinders in 1/3 and 1/2 HP
Baldor 1/2 HP pedestal grinder
Greenerd 5 ton arbor press Model #4 3/4
Sensitive drill press 1/4HP Dumore Model #37-011

Future equipment capabilities (Need installation and hooking up):
Trinco 24" blast cabinet Model #BP24
Bridgeport vertical knee mill
Parts washer
South Bend 9x48 lathe Model A
South Bend 10x36 lathe Heavy 10
Camelback drill press
Delta Rockwell 17" 1HP floor model drill press
HF "H" press
Campbell Hausfeld 6HP 60Gal compressor
Walker Turner disc and belt sander Model #SM700
Various woodworking machines
Small anvil
Welder

I added myself and Aggie, just since he had an easy location and list to copy paste. I just dropped my pin in the middle of my city. I can set it up to invite people though so they can add their own location. The map is not public. You need the link to view it, but anyone can edit the map. Collaborators can also invite anyone.

Wow....This has generated some pretty good responses. I'm going to start working up a spreadsheet that can be put online and anyone can access it to update it as needed.

I think I may have to get in touch with ShopNut and ask him a few questions as to how he did a few things. I know most definitely that a lot of members will find this useful. And as soon as I get a few of my projects done, I'm going to have to find one member around that has a surface grinder.

Great idea for the thread Kevin. An interactive spreadsheet like in the sticky for the garage gallery would be cool. Not sure how much work that is though.

If people are actually interested, I can start taking PMs with e-mail addresses. Then I can just add you to the collaborator list and you can edit the map. I just did it to test it out and see if anyone was interested.

Did the same. The "edit" button wasn't there last PM. That map works excellent for this! And I think when you save it to your places, it stays updated when anyone adds themselves in there.....
