Default Do-it-yourself public rental garage in Los Angeles

This is a Do It Yourself Garage which allow people to work on their cars. It is fully equipped with all the tools and equipments. You can also have on site mechanic to help you out when you are in trouble.

Beautiful garage and the more importantly, it belongs to everyone who lives near Los Angeles.

It belongs to everyone who lives near LA? When can I expect my first rent check from those guys?

This is a great idea. I have friends that could use this.

.... It appears to belong to anyone who is willing to pay $225/day for it. You don't need a membership like you did for the TechShop. Pretty cool. After a few days, every month, you could rent a place and buy a hoist. Or, after one day, if you split it with your buddies! If I was less of an enthusiast, but still wanted to DIY, this would be a strong consideration. Before I owned my own lift, I had to pay to rent my friends lift if I couldn't get work into my employer after hours.

I've heard of this for motorcycles before. First time I've seen it for cars, though. Love the idea!

It's definitely an attempt to get business. But it's also somewhat garage related. I'm going to move it out of the Gallery section, where I don't think it belongs.

I'm kind of on the fence as to whether it ought to be here at all.

Reminds me of the hobby shops located on base in Quonset huts in the early 60's.

A few old gas stations tried this 20+ years ago. Just a bay and a lift and they were old and grimey. I don't think there are any left.

A bit pricey if you are doing the average shade tree work (brakes, shocks, etc). Also, I suspect most shade tree guys take a lot longer to do a job, like brakes, as compared to a pro.

Besides having specialty tools available (at extra cost), I would hope that they would offer rotor/drum turning service as well as strut changing service. They should also stock a good selection of nuts and bolts, both US and metric and some other universal parts (hose clamps, straight hose, muffler clamps, etc.). Fenced outdoor storage would also be good.

They also really need to be open 24 hours !

$225/day and you're gonna sit around playing Xbox?? I'd really be interested in seeing more pics of the babe in high heels...I wonder if she's a "plant" to make guys spend more time there?

This concept has been around for decades. Click and Clack used to run one near Boston back in the 1970s. I even used it once, as it was better than working on the car in the snow. Every one I've ever seen ends up going out of business eventually (like the one here in Northern VA, near Dulles Airport). I'm guessing that the cost of the liability insurance makes it impossible to make money.

That and one good lawsuit will sink it.

Yep.

We've had several in my area.

All are now long gone.

No tools. Wrong tools. Broken tools. BYO tools.
Even saw it once for a local wood working shop called the "Wood Gym."
Same premise. Same accidents and liablitity and thus same closure.

It only takes one dumbass to ruin it for everyone come accident time.
And there's "YEARS " if not decades of youtube footage to prove that.

Leave it up.

It is a useful post for those of us in the LA area.

I agree with others on here that say it won't last long. A lawsuit will kill it. Shame.
