It is great to see other countries building methods and materials.
Are those solid concrete blocks on the foundation wall? Labor looks the same here, three guys and some diesel powered equipment. What are the specifications on the building and what do you plan on working on it the shop? This is one to watch... |

Looks sturdy !
Is the corrugated steel the roof covering, or the start of a second floor concrete deck ? |

the corrugated steel is not the roof covering.
On top of it will be the insulation and directly on the insulation the tarmac (correct word?). This is what you call a "warm roof". This way you wont need any ventilation for the roof structure. The selfsupporting steel profiles are strong enough to land a helicopter on. This way of building is not very common here either. Except for shopping centres and so on. But it is a very cheap way to build. It has the advantage that you build the walls last and can use the shelter in the process. You love the bus? Its actually a panelvan. I have 5 different aircooled Volkswagens and a 1952 westfalia funeraltrailer. G. Last edited by Gustav_t; 02-18-2009 at 10:21 AM. |

The roofprofiles are ordered to exact length (12,5 meters) and is shot into the top beams with a "Hilti-gun". That means a secured roof over your head within 20 minutes!
I attached metalbrackets to the studs for the walls before raising them and welded the brackets when raised. Really fast and easy. The roof covering will be rigid insulation, then tarmack directly on top of it. G. ![]() ![]()

Many German cities now have "enviromental protection zones" where cars without catalyc converters etc. are not allow to enter. Because of the many cars are no longer interesting on the German market and are sold cheap in Denmark, Poland - you name it. Of cause you then have to pay somwhere around 180% tax on cars when the imported to Denmark (both new and used cars).
But don't get your hopes to high because cars that are more than 35 years old are considderd vintage/historic and allow in the zones. Workshop looking good. |

I think you can only licence a car for so many years now in Germany - then you have to park it - or sell it out of country. Is that right Gustav?

Not exactly. I believe car older than 1992 and less than 35 years of age will need a (expensive) polution tag in their window. Due to this the germans are selling their old cars out of the country where people still think they are nice cars. The Danish government will have to deal with this sooner or later and there is pressure from the european union to regulate the 180% cartax rule in Denmark.

Until they lower that tax, I'll get by on old motorcycles. The '71 CZ 175 I bought in Germany didn't cost me anything besides the cost of the licenseplate itself (~500DKK = 85$)

They are rare in Denmark too. I think we have 5 - 10 examples in Denmark. About 5,5 mill. people live in Denmark.
Today I started to to put up the used garagedoor i bought. It is 4.30 meters wide. Quite a job when youīre alone. G. |

More progress.. I bought a used industrialsized "Garagedoor" and cut it down to size. I only used the panels without handles, manufacturers logo and so on. Its one big black panel. Now I need to build the rest of the wall around the doorhole.
Iīve also started building the top of the walls where they will meet the roof.

It will consist of a 135 mm. layer of insulation a vaporbarrier and 50 mm. "Hard Rock" insulation.
Thanks theres actually a couple of vehicles missing a 1951 bug and a 1952 Westfalia "Funeral trailer" which is actually a hearse that you could tow after your everyday car! I appreciate the feedback and will bring you more updates soon. G.

I couldnīt find a picture with its 17" alloy wheels on it.
This was how it looked when I found it in Nürnberg, Germany. It was common that the trailer was passed around the village, always being registered to the family of the latest deceased in the village. The Pink slip had literally hundreds of names on it.. G.

Thanks for posting that. Very interesting. I was thinking it would be more on the lines of a Gun Carriage you see the army use for military funerals.

If you look closely you will see there is a gun fitted.
Traditional burial for those of importance if you research it. http://www.trooping-the-colour.co.uk/funeral/ http://www.thamesweb.co.uk/windsor/w...funeral01.html Lets try a bigger photo so you can see the Gun.

![]() ![]() ![]() Assembling the used garagedoor from a bucket of bolts and gizmoes was a challenge. I called a professional to adjust the cables and springs and its working really good. I also got all the windows and doors properly installed. I got a couple of old roadside lamps that I plan to get painted red with some checkers on the rim. Think they look kind of like a 60īs design. These days the weather is fair and iīm on the roof making it ready for the insulation and pavement. More pictures of that later. |

A little documentation of the work done on the roof.
This is where the insulation will be laid. I may have got a good lead on free (FREEEEE!!!) insulation taken of a closed school building.

Your build is definatley interesting. Is the way your torsion springs are mounted normal for your area? In the US we mount them directly above the door. I would be cautious about the way yours are mounted that if for some reason one of the cables snapped it would have a long travel with alot of stuff to damage on the way to the drum.

Thanks for your comments - building this thing by myself is lonely...
The reason for the location of the spring is because it is a "low headroom door". You also have them in the US. What is "Scando environmentalism"? Its actually quite effectively insulated. G. |

Cool aircooled cars and interesting build. I am in the planning stages of building a garage myself and currently consider brick versus wood but your build gets me thinking.... You say that it is a cheap way to build. What is the cost compared to traditional (in Denmark) brick building if I might ask. Btw. D Did'nt I see the red Karmann Ghia at MIB's Easter swap meet in Aalborg?

Hey Michael - Yes my girlfriend and I briefly visited the swapmeet.
When I call it cheap it is because it is not very labour-intensive. Once the trusses are raised and the corrugated steel laid on top, you can raise the studs by yourself. I chose to attach a square iron along the entire length of the building. I then mounted small pieces of flat iron on the studs enabling me to weld the studs in top once happy with alignment. You can see it in one of the pictures. This means you can singlehandedly build the walls in aprox. one day. Thats cheap. My dad had a contractor build something similar sized in bricks. The cost of labour was massive. But bricks are nice.. |

![]() ![]() Hey Jorgen Funny thing about the bus - here car-people donīt really care for the bus. They like my other rides more. Are you really danish? In that case next time you visit family bring 97 square meters of your garage floors. We donīt have that stuff in Denmark. I even considered becoming a dealer.. Well. A huge step for the build: Roof guys were here. In these pictures they havenīt done the edges yet, but damn they were quick. They laid out the insulation, put in the safety screws and put two layers of tarmac on in 5 hours! It looks really great. G. |

Hi Søren
Thank you for your comments. Are you into aircooled cars yourself? If so, there is a fair chance we have seen eachother at one of the MIB events in Aalborg. My neighbors are getting used to the building now. It may have helped that I gave one of them my old vice for his workshop. G. |

Itīs been a busy summer with lots of carshows and stuff - but iīve mannaged to get some work done. On one shot you can see my house and how little of the garage is visible from my lawn. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have to say I love this garage build. There are so many things that are tastefully done. I like your sense of architecture. Not to mention the cool cars. A ghia with Targa wheels? That's cool. I like the long horizontal mullion windows. That's how I'm doing my shop. And the glazed garage door. You don't want to know what those cost in the USA. I'm spending six grand on two doors like that. But talk about cool. Your shop is the best bang for the buck. Simple and effective. I'll be embarrassed to post my shop when I get started soon. It's just way overkill. And way too much money. I like simple. Nice!

Thanks Gregg. All the doors and windows are bought from a factory outlet.
Its the best brand in europe - but in odd measurements. Doesnīt really matter in a new building. The whole lot (3 long windows, 3 tall ones, 1 door) cost me about 1700 dollars. I think the roof/insulation solution is genious. I thank my friend again and again for coming up with that idea. I just took the ghia for a 2600 km. spin to the SPA racetrack and back for the "BUG SHOW". Worked fine. G. |

Unfortunately the only aircooled vehicle i own is a 1967 Velo Solex moped . I haven't attented any MIB events so we probably haven't met.Must say I'm stille jealous of both your garage and your cars. It's interesting to see your construction method. I haven't seen a garage or any other building constructed like that. Either people build a carport or go full-scale brick garages which probably is crazy expensive. Must say your approach is very neat and absolutely "bang for the buck" as the americans might say It's looking great so far so keep us updated .

A lot of buildings are infact constructed like this.
Take a look on the ceiling next time you visit your local supermarket. A lot of "Kvicklyīs" and Føtexīs are build like this. I also have noticed a lot of schools build this way. OK they are usually with wooden trusses but with insulation on top of corrugated steel plate. G. |

Gustav you can be very proud of your new shop. Like your used cabinets, they look great and lots of storage. You must really like having a nice place to work on those great air cooleds you have. Are you restoring the trailer?
In US they tax property every time you improve something, did this cause your taxes to increase? Best to you and yours |

I just want to say thank you for telling us about your garage build. I love seeing the architecture of other countries.
Two questions on the roof. What is the life expectancy of the tarmac? And how do you replace or repair it if it goes bad? Thanks again. Glen ________ Mazda MX-6 history Last edited by dreamingmuscle; 02-08-2011 at 06:21 PM. |

The roofing looks like modified bitumen single ply. If so, it's what I used to do for a living. 20 years or so, on a flat roof. Repairs are easy.

Thanks for all the kind words.
The tarmac is dual layers - done by the best in the business in Denmark. Theres is a 15 year waranty - but my other garage was done by the same company 25 years ago when my father owned the house and it looks like new. This is the only thing I farmed out. Youīve got to respect rainwater.. G. |

![]() I almost forgot garagejournal and keeping you guys updated. My friend Michael finished all the final nailing with a rotary-air-nailgun. This little car I found siting in a field, found the missing parts, put the engine and brakes back on, lowered it, added some wheels and sold it again. G. |

Hi Gustav,
Just read this whole thread. Great build, love all your cars. I still regret not buying a Razor Ghia years ago when offered one for stupid money back in South Africa. I very nearly had one of those Hearse trailers too. I have just started building a Teardrop trailer, The hearse trailer would have been an alternative to it, but I wanted the kitchen bit too. . It is to tow behind my Ford Taunus Transit FK1250, which I imported from Germany in 2007. Hopefully in August we will have a new house, with a garage that will take 6 VW Golfs. Trailer Build thread here: http://www.retrorides.proboards.com/...y&thread=67389 LINK: http://retrorides.proboards.com/inde...y&thread=37192 ![]() I also have a 1956 Ford Anglia 100E , which I bought for Nicola, my best half, who I will marry in August 2010 as she is a petrol head too (Lucky me) LINK:http://retrorides.proboards.com/inde...y&thread=60718 ![]() Here they are both in front of Nicola's place on the way to the www.medwaymonkeys.co.uk get together. Medway Monkeys is an ofshoot of Oldskool Ford and local, with great and helpfull people.

That is one cool Transit - arenīt those rader/randar wheels made for Volkswagens? Does the transit run 2x205 pcd?
Thanks for your kind words. These days iīm welding a friends ovalwindow bug in the old 30 sqm. garage as its insulated and sports a fireplace.. cozy. G. |

Hallo Gustav,Thanks , as mentioned below, the Transit does run Radars on specially made up Adaptors @ Ģ330 incl the new wheel bolts, probably one of the most expensive luxuries on the bus at the price, but I needed them. I have found a guy who made me a pair for Ģ40 plus postage for the Teardrop trailer here in the UK as it is also getting Radars, so they can be made for less, I paid too much for the first ones .The Transit runs 5x160 if I remember. It is currently getting a Ford Zetec transplant by a good friend.

My friend built a teardrop trailer a couple of years back. I helped him a bit with the design and holding steel while he was welding and so on. He did a really good job. Iīll find some pics for you. Heīs a really clever fabricator. He builds trucks (lorries?) for a living.

I finally got started on the drywall. A local shop had the stuff on sale and I decided to do the bit behind the work area to be able to get the chequered tiles up. It just snowbaled from there...

Great build, I really enjoy seeing how it is done in other places. Your aircooleds are sweet, I have a '71 Ghia and a '65 Bug in my mix. The bike is way cool!

Wow. I like what I see. All your vw's are awesome. I think I have seen pictures of your ghia on the samba, I love the color combo, though I am a bit biased.
The panel looks real clean. Nice fasty and split window too. A while back I test fitted those wheels you had on that squareback, but didn't like them compared with the stock chomes with moons. I really like the design of the exterior of your house and garage. They work well together. |

Thanks for all the kind words - When I initially joined the Garage Journal the amount of v-dubbers here were close to none. Donīt get me wrong I like US steel to. But I would love to see some "high-dollar" v-dub workshops.

Yes I follow a blog where youre club is regularly mentioned.
The frost is gone and I finally got the tiles up over the worktable. I decided to use no grout as it will always be bone dry and I avoided cutting a single tile. It fitted perfectly beneath the cable housing. G. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice build and fleet. I have a '62 DC, '65 Westfalia (pop-top) waiting resto, '67 Westfalia (hard-top) interior donor, and '66 fastback. Only the fasty is operational. The DC was in a horrible head on while my wife was driving. The event has permanantly tainted the hobby for me, but I still can not get rid of them. I have a love/hate relationship with them. We had many great time in them though. We went to Bad Camberg '03 and had a blast, even getting up to Amsterdam for the one day meeting at a awesome shop there...forget the name.
Wear your 3 pt. seat belts please! I have some pics that I'll post when I get home. Again great looking shop...but how could you not build with a lift in mind?? Always on the look out for one of these :-)

@glsmaverick:
Building materials and labour are extremely expensive in Denmark. You also has to pay taxes according to the value of your property. People canīt afford huge garages unless they really, really want to. @SWharris: Sounds cool with the type 2 collection + fastback Please dont post of the wrecked one. I have had a couple of crashes in my life and they haunt me all the time. G. Last edited by Gustav_t; 05-17-2010 at 01:53 AM. |

Gustav, You have a beautiful garage and a great collection of air cooled rides. Your panel is sweet. I have inherited my family's '65 Split that is now in my garage to restore. Before I can fully get into the tear down, I want to finish my garage floor to keep from staining the concrete. Thus, I found GJ and now, thanks to garages like yours, I will have to redo my garage before I can do my bus justice. You know how one thing leads to another, to another and to another... But thanks to GJ, the ball is rolling and someday the bus will be too...
I am interested in your cabinets with the pull-out trays. Do you have any more pix of how you use them? That looks like a creative idea to solve storage problems. Glad I found your thread. Keep up the great work. jeff |

![]() Not a lot of progress in the garage this summer. I did however get this little used cabinet done. Its about the same age as the cars. Now I finally have a dry but dustfree place to keep the really nice bits. I used some old paint and had some hardened glass made up for shelves. Lights were sourced from our old kitchen.

It's a very nice garage/workshop Gustav. I've never been to Denmark, but I still have to drive my Saab to Sweden one day.
I Like your VW's. I never saw such a Nice Karmann Ghia before. It's rare and I like it a lot. You've polished your Fuchs wheels? I liked the old black look on those Fuchs. Your Ghia looks a bit like a Corvair. Sorry , but I like the Corvair's looks with twin headlights and I don't like the normal Karmann Ghia (round/girly) nose. This is a guy's car Keep up the good work. |

Gustav, yours is one of my favorite builds. Now that a year or so has passed, please post a new set of photos showing both the interior and exterior as well as your cars. Sorry if I missed it but what year is your bus? When I was growing up I was in Boy Scouts and my parents bought a new VW bus to haul us around. This must have been in 1972 or 1973. Prior to that my father had a '65 beetle and I fondly remember both vehicles.
Also, if you could please show the space between your two buildings. I have a similar set up with my new garage and I am finally getting to the point where I need to add some type of walkway and fencing. Thanks for sharing your wonderful cars and garage with us. |

Iīm so glad you guys like it. I decided to step out into the garage and take some shots just as it is right now. Unfinished, a bit cluttered and full of cars. I took the old panelvan on a european tour this summer. Touring germany, holland, belgium, france and england. Its only now I am getting back in the garage remembering how cool it was to get things done in there.

Gustav, Just found your thread this morning and I have to say that your garage is incredible. I have loved everything you have done. I have one question though. Either I missed when you said the dimensions or they were never stated, soooooooo can you please advise how big it is. Again, you have done a fantastic job. Oh, and I love all your cars too.

Hi original57 and welcome to my build. Glad you appreciate it so far.
As I am from Europe I can only give you the dimensions in meters. Itīs 12,5 meters long and 7,5 meters wide. The garagedoor is 4,5 meters wide G.

I really appreciate all the feedback. Eventually I will get back to the project. I am unsure as to whether I will be skilled enough to do the mudding of the drywall.

I cheated and used this online calculator : http://www.metric-conversions.org/le...rs-to-feet.htm The garage looks great and your vw collection looks like fun.. While I really want a porsche 356 outlaw, I may end up with a "outlaw" beetle instead. I would need more power than the stock engine(s) though..as we have lot's more hills here in Norway ![]() I know some guys here in southern Norway who are really into aircooled vw's, you probably have met them at meetings..

If this has been mentioned, I appologize. But red cabinets?
I don't like red in a shop. Looks too much like blood and I waste time looking for injured body parts. Well, I injure body parts much too frequently. But your red cabinet doors look very nice. I like. ditto on all the comments on your vehicles. Dave.

The red I chose to make it look a bit American - I will decide if it's to much when the floortiles are laid.

![]() I thought I would share this little gem with you guys. My friend and I went to a yard sale at an old now defunct Peugeot dealership. The owner died in the fall and the family sold everything. The guy went to work everyday even he was about 80 years old. The family told us that he didnīt sell a single car for the last 14 years. We bought a lot of cool stuff there. My friend found a really nice 1960ies Peugeot dealers sign and I found this lightbulb storage/tester unit. It was full of old lightbulbs, many of them in yellow colour (which I really like). G.

Nice build. I also enjoy seeing how its done in other countries.
I really like your use of glass. The glass doors give a really good view in and out that was a great choice. I have clearstory windows in the garage and they have been good in summer but particularly so in the winter, lots of light and some heat. Keep on "Postin" those pictures. Thanks. Rick |

Hi Rick
I dont know if it shows in the pictures but I can sit in my favourite spot on the couch and look into the garage through the glass door in my kitchen. Actually I can sit on the padio and look through the house too. G. PS. Sorry for my gramma - but english is only our second language here in Denmark

You sure did - on top of the fastback. I bought it from a guy who started building it 20 years ago. He never finished it - now it sits there waiting for me to do the small wood parts inside.

Beautiful garage, are you on the Samba? I'm not sure if I've seen your stuff on there? I just came across a 15 window 63 deluxe at a auction, I have pictures on the Samba, same user name.
May I ask if you don't mind what you do for a living, and are the VW's a hobby? OK I'm subscribing to this so I can visit this thread and drool over the fine work you've done. By the way English is my first laungage, but you would never guess unless I told you

Hi
Thanks for the drool ![]() I own a small business - a one man operation in graphic design and print. Everything from advertising strategies to a box of logo-envelopes. I do visit the samba ones in a while but rarely post anything as there is very little feedback. I must admit that I have found great help there for my 51 bug, colours, wires and so on. I am extremely active in the european scene where I often drive my cars for stupidly long distances for meetings and so on (Ninove, Spa Francorchamps, London Volksfest and more...). G.

Thanks Gustav,
I have a niece that does that kind of work, she's very artistic and has a talent like you do. The last picture looks very nice, is that sunset or at sunrise, and is that close to where you live, I thought I read you lived close to a beach resort? Did you find most of your cars close by or did you have to import from another country? |

That is indeed Southend on Sea in England. I live in Denmark - and last year my girlfriend and I took the long trip down through Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium and took the eurotunnel to Britain. We drove around in the south of England for a week (visiting Type2detectives in cambridge) and ended up in South-end-on-sea to visit the guys at Karmann Connection. The bus trip of my life so far.
So this is nowhere near home.. but where I live is just at beautifull - but in a danish way G.

Next step is to cover the concrete floor - what is your opinion - dark grey tiles or epoxy?

Nice ...It would be nice to see bigger lights on the front of the garage. it would be more inviting, with the color been black at night and all. Also if there was away to put in sky lights. That would save some $$ Just some thought.. VERY NICE WORK.

If your beautiful garage were mine, I would go with the gray tiles, but for accent, I would add yellow tiles (the color of your Bosch clock).

Nice build! I love the way you have used steel for the structure.
The Panel Van is just fantastic. I used to drive a Bay Window as my daily drive here in Norway. It was quite cold in the winter, but fun to slide around on snowy roads Even went to Løkken with it one summer

Well for something easier to keep clean, I would go with the epoxy paint, lots of colors and you can cumstomize some logo on the floor. Tiles are fine but hard to keep the grout lines clean, plus you have to peroidotic have to seal the tiles, plus if you drop something hard they can crack. But thats what I went with and the floor looks nice and shiney, each their own.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I decided to go with epoxy in same dark grey color as the tiles that I have used in the entire house. As for the lights outside I have chosen these small belgian lights on the padio area as well and I want it to be the same all the way around the house. They give great light but its hard to get on camera. I live in a scenic area where very bright lights would look out of place.
Will post new pictures soon - lots of new stuff happening right now. G.

Thanks for the great pics of your cool shop. I'm inspired by the tiled backing over the bench - I think I'll do that in my 2-car attached garage next spring.

Thank you guys. I try to do as much as I can with recycled furniture and a little paint. The tiles where dirt-cheap - like 100 dollars for the entire project.
Soon the epoxy floor will be laid, which I think will lift the over all look of the project. Flenne - you can come by anytime - I think I am closer to you than Ikast? G.

Always wanted an original paint HJ60 - really high. I used to own a jet black tricked out Hilux. Sadly it got totalled. If you ever need org. stickers for HJ60 i got the digital files for it.

Hello from another VW'er here in the states!
The black exterior of your house and garage is beautiful. Love the Karmann Ghia. The air-cooled VWs never tripped my trigger much, but that car looks fantastic. Bravo on a job very well done. |

![]() Finally managed to get a little work done again. Been busy in the house and our first baby is due within a couple of weeks. But got these toolboards up on the wall and got all the hand tools organised. I wonder for how long I will walk to the old tool cabinet for something that is on the wall in front of me. G.

Enjoy the next few weeks of 'freedom'. Soon you won't be reaching for tools; you will be holding your breath while working with baby wipes! lol
