Well The DeWalt bench grinder came today. $99 from MSC, and I know thetoolwarehouse has it for like 87 or so, but I needed some hardware and a few other odds and ends.

Well I unpacked it today, and it is pretty beefy. The cast Iron base keeps the thing from wobbling, you dont even need to bolt the thing down, because it doesnt walk, even when grinding. Assembly was pretty straight forward, and they were kind enough to give me a parts breakdown if anything goes wrong. Is it a baldor? nope, but its still pretty well built, especially for 99$. 4 amp motor which is the highest I could find on a 6 inch bench grinder for around 100. I already touched up a few things and It is very nice to use. The switch seems durable and the mounts are "solid" with a good amount of adjustability. The eye shields are also nice and easy to use so I wont be taking them off. The wheel shrouds are actually steel, and I must say, they are using some decent bearings in there because it spins up fast but it keeps spinning after you shut it off for what seems like forever. Smooth running and pretty quiet. A slot of grinding a drill bit might have been a nice feature, but other than that, Its an excellent grinder for the money, I cant slow it down.

Too bad its made in china, but Im banking that ALL of them are, so I didnt have much of a choice. Id recommend it, another quality tool from DeWalt.

Sure, for alot more money you can buy a Baldor like I have on my Quincy QT-15 compressor, but for the money, I don't think you can get a better one. IMHO, you made the right move.

You have a baldor bench grinder on your quincy compressor?? Pictures please

I have 3 of them
A little piece-o-**** 6" ONLY used to sharpen TIG electrodes
A 20 year old CrapsMan industral model 10" that I have a wire wheel mounted on one side that is really handy to clean up bolt threads and other light duty rust/paint removal jobs. The other side gets used to sharpen mower blades and other light grinding. I think I will take that wheel off and get one of the scotch-brite deburring wheels for it.
A "Little" Baldor 5hp 14"X3" wheel monster that I have for the heavy hogin jobs.

When I bought my grinder, I bought a 8" Craftsman as it was what I could afford. It was also made in China. In fact every one I looked at was made in China. I can't afford to spend $200 plus on a bench grinder unless I buy one tool every 8 months. So in my case it was a choice of buy foreign made or buy nothing. Either way, I wasn't going to buy an American made grinder.

Yeah guys, I had no choice on this one... find me a US made one for 100$ and Ill instantly send it back saying "im not satisfied BECAUSE its made in china"

You cant sharpen a drill bit on an angle grinder :) Bench grinders are great for anything small.. say a tiny little bracket that you need to touch up real quick or something like that. Th have thier places. I have heard disk sanders are actually a better tool, but you wont fidn one for 100$. But really, I plan on switching one over to a wire wheel. As was stated, great for cleaning up small parts.

I have a Craftsman combination 6" disc/belt sander that I got for $115. While it works well for sanding and grinding I've also sharpened drill bits with it.

I never knew DeWalt made bench grinders. Last year I wanted a bench grinder and my parents bought me an 8" Ryobi from Home Depot for my birthday. I got tired of changing between the grinding wheels and wire brushes that I went back and bought a second one so one of them now is set up with wire wheels and the other has the grinding wheels. No more changing back and forth.

Jim, how smooth is this bench grinder? I can't use the old one any more. It vibrates like crazy, and I keep it where my small parts bins are, so it's really annoying. I want something that is butter-smooth.

A bump on a 2 year old thread. But I thought I'd ask how the Dewalt Bench grinder is treating you? Looking at the archives, I've also read about more high end offerings, like Wissota, and of course there's Baldor and older Craftsman models, but was curious how this Dewalt is holding up?

I know I'm tickled pink with my Wilton. It'll take 1" x.125" strap iron and eat it like candy, to the point 3/4" of it is glowing. Not bad for $100.

I only buy Chinese tools but Japan is awesome too.
I also drive a Mitsubishi and painted it like Saburo Sakai's Zero fighter plane. White with a thin blue stripe and the red sun disk on each side.

I have 4 bench grinders.

One 6" China special bought off the travelling tool truck (Cummins Industrial Tool) many years ago. It vibrates, but still runs fine.

Then I bought an old 6" for $7 off Craigslist. Runs smooth, and is made in the USA (probably 60's).

Next was a China made 6" Craftsman. Has a light build into the guard/shield, and has a wheel dresser right on it. $20 off Craigslist.

Last one is a Souix 8", 3/4 hp. USA made. $30 off eBay.

I guess what I'm saying is, check out Craigslist/eBay for used ones. US made for less than China price.
