Drill Press without a Drill Press?

I want to make a rack to hang my combination wrenches, etc from. My plan is to take a piece of 1/2" plywood and then drill holes in it and then glue some 3/8" dowel rods into these holes to use as hangars. I want all the holes to be pretty much square to the plywood. Something like a drill press would seem ideal you really can't fit a piece of plywood into most drill presses.

Any suggestions? Am I over thinking this?

FYI . . . I do not like the look of peg board, hence this project.

Plunge router? Clamp a board or something to the plywood to use as a guide, then just move the router along the guide, plunging where you want holes. This way the holes will all be in a nice straight line without the hassle of aligning the router for every hole.

i've seen dome hand drills that have a bubble level on the back. if the board is level and the drill is level, the holse should be perpindicular to the board.

or possible one of the small table top drills set to drill through it's base?
that should also make a squared up hole in the plywood. similar to a magnetic base drill

You can also "make" a guide. use your drill press to drill a hole in a thick piece of steel or even a 2x4 and then use that hole as a guide for drilling into the plywood. If using a 2x4 you could even put a bushing or some tube etc if the hole to reduce the wear.

Good suggestions guys. I may try to find someone local with a press to make a guide for me. That would be the cheapest and fastest solution.

Alternately, the plunge router seems like a good suggestion, and a guy can always use some new tools!

why not just go with peg board and a sturdy wood frame behind it. Save you money, and time im sure.

how wide of a piece of wood do you want to bore the holes in becuase most will be able to reach center on a _x10 peice of lumber.

and you can prob buy a decent bench top drill press for less than a decent plunge router and small, but very good cutter would cost.

Use a 1" or 2" by 48" strip of the pegboard as drilling guide (if one inch increments or multiple there of is what you want) Use a combo square, or make guide to hold drill at desired angle. Clamp pegboard to plywood and drill 1st and last hole in pegboard strip and then temp install pegs to keep guide from moving. Drill remaining holes at desired spacing.

what about just screwing hooks into the plywood? They make them in all different sizes and shapes for whatever you want to hang on it
