Is this board meant for older people??

I am beginning to think that this board is aimed at older people. I rarely ever see any young people on here, I am just curious. I know that I am only 24 and I have a sweet shop, and I know I am lucky and have a great wife who puts up with all my toys and stuff. I made a thread about my new pepsi machine and candy machine, and it has 100 views and 1 reply, I guess I think that people dont care about what younger guys have to say around here.

Not trying to make anyone mad, just want some feed back please...

maybe if you were telling about some new tools or equipment you got in your shop you would have had more reply's ... maybe nobody cares about a pepsi machine and a candy machine in their shop

Haha, I can't speak for others, but I read what interests me...which is most things. I read your other post. I just didn't think I could add anything to the conversation.

I don't filter out younger people's threads, even if I could. Don't sweat it, bud. Sometimes it takes a couple days to get a thread rolling...

I work in my shop, although I do have a popcorn machine on wheels and a water cooler in my shop, I generally only read posts that help me work in my shop. A Pepsi machine in a shop means to me someone who is not serious about working and more interested in looking cool, I DO NOT MEAN TO OFFEND YOU so please don't be, I don't know you, you might be a better motor man than me, you might be a better welder than me, you might be a better body and car painter than me, but a Pepsi machine will not help me restore my cars and does not interest me. I don't even have a TV in my garage but I do have a cheap AM/FM radio.

Now one non-tool subject that did interest me last year on this board was this guy that put in a urinal in his garage, ok that was a good idea :) But I did not reply to that thread either.

I'm not one to do "Oh My" or "thats wonderful" or "thats neat or cool" posts. I try to add something substantial to the thread, more info, links, my experience, something.

I've got a fridge in my "shop" (an aircraft hangar in my backyard, I call it a shop here to keep from sounding stuck up or whatever), and aside from a coke or two, and a case or two of bottled water, it has items that I don't want exposed to extreme heat, like cans of freon.

Look at the thread on ages of the board's participants, it varies widely and is largely the 40 and up crowd, but a good number of younger people also. I learned auto mechanicing and such from my father, it was something along the lines of "son you have to learn or you will end up paying others to do this for you, and you probably won't be able to afford to do that". Wished I'd had the internet and discussion groups when I was coming up.

I agree with Charles. I don't fluff post. If I have something "worthy" to say, I say it.

Unless I come up with something obnoxious or funny, then I will certainly stick in a comment!

It's not an age thing, although there are likely a lot fewer of the 'younger crowd' that are likely to have a shop, let alone be serious about one. What it really boils down to is what people are interested in doing to and with their shops.

As a couple guys pointed out, they're pure business...if it has nothing to do with wrenching/welding/woodworking or whatever they actually do in the shop, they're not interested.

Others are more into the showroom garages, and don't do much more than light tuneups, but are interested in having the vintage pumps, pop machines and so forth that give the shop a 'comfy' feel where the guys can get together for a beer on Saturday afternoon, or whatever.

Some of us fit somewhere inbetween...I intend to do some serious work in my shop, but I don't think it needs to be totally utilitarian - I'll have knickknacks on the walls, I'm looking for a Coke machine similar to that pepsi machine you've got, and wouldn't mind an old gas pump either.

As for replies, or a lack thereof to your post...give it some time. Yeah, 100 views, not necessarily all unique views, but we've got hundreds/thousands of regulars on the site...not all of whom logged in today or had anything to say in regards to your finds.

Trust me I take no offense.

When my shop was first done, it was just a parking garage pretty much, did little stuff here and there, and my close friends come over and if they needed a place to work on stuff that was cool. But I do work in mine, and I like stuff in there to livin it up a bit, and I am also a neat freek, I cant stand stuff to be dirty one bit, be it cars, house, or the shop.

But I am young, I still like to be flashy, and there is not one person on this board who would NOT take a free vintage pepsi machine, lol:bounce:

Heres me yesterday gettin my new truck motor ready to go, see I do some work! :)

Shopking, don't forget... If it weren't for the way the board displays new posts (new posts that are older than x hours drop off the list) you would probably get more hits. Brought this up before, but it never went anywhere. :headscrat

I dig everything about shops...I get equal enjoyment out of reading about usefull home-made shop tools, ideas on organizing, and the fun stuff like vintage signs, gas pumps and soda machines.
For me, the shop is The Man Pit. I go out there to enjoy being out there. Sometimes that means working on the projects, sometimes that means organizing things, sometimes that means hanging stuff up on the walls as decoration, and sometimes that means just walking out there and looking at all of it and relaxing.

Hell I can't speak for everyone but I didn't have any money untill I was 45.

I'm 27, and fully in the "Damn, man. Wish I could do (___________ fun thing), but baby has to eat, the house needs work, and I already am in debt 'up to my eyeballs' like the guy in the TV ad" mode of life. I have a little 1-car basement garage that I am (painfully slowly) trying to turn into something a little nicer, but there's just other stuff that has to come first.

The fact that there are a lot of more experienced guys on here is one of the main reasons I like this board, and it's that way because it takes a certain amount of financial wherewithal to build a shop, renovate part of your house into one, etc. Helps weed out the "hey man, check out my 200 shot nitrous kit that I put on with zip ties and bubble gum" set, y'know?

I got a nice trip down memory lane from your pepsi machine- there was one just like that in the little country store where mom used to take us after school to visit her friends (old folks who were like surrogate grandparents for us, since we lived away from the rest of the family). Thanks for that.

While this board is non-discriminatory when it comes to age, I think the fact that most 24-year olds can't afford their own home kind of takes care of it by natural selection.

If you want a Pepsi machine in your garage, more power to you. If people don't respond, don't be offended. Personally, my usual pass through this site goes "General Garage Discussion" then "General Tool Discussion". I don't really know why, but when this site changed hands I pretty much stopped visiting the other sections. It just wasn't really "homey" there anymore.

That's good to hear....because I'm almost 44, and just got the two oldest kids out of the house. Something's going to happen....I can feel it...;)

Missed the infamous Pepsi machine post will have to search it out, with garage that big you should have one at each end.

Dam how many V8's do you have hanging around, what ya doing with them.

PS: I'm 38 I'm not old; every time I buy a new tool I'm a kid again.

As others have said, I look at most new posts but don't necessarily post something unless I have something to add to the conversation. I saw the soda and candy machines. Don't get me wrong, but they're a couple rusty chunks of metal... :) Ok, you're going to turn them into something sweet. When you post pictures of them all cleaned up, painted, and all - then I'll give you a pat on the back for good job well done! :pimpflash

And it really has nothing to do with age. I agree that to some extent the board is going to attract an older crowd that can afford a trick garage. There are a lot of early twenties people out there buying houses, but a lot are still in apartments and such that don't have the option of a garage. Took me until I was thirty to have the money to start my garage build and now I'm closing in on forty and am still working on getting it just how I want it. Granted, a divorce and a couple direction changes in the career had something to do with slowing progress down...

It sounds to me like you have a self confidence problem...who cares how old you are or if you profess to have a "sweet shop" (looks like a basic pole barn)?

I'm 24 also, and I've gotten some awesome replies regarding my shop build.

Me too. I'll bet you could get close to balanced his way so it can be rolled over in the stand without a violent flipping action... :shocking:

I agree with what some of the others say, it's just that many younger people don't have the means yet to build a nice garage/shop. I guess I'm nearing the middle of the 'older' / 'yonger' crowd...even though I still think of myself as a kid, at almost 30. Most of my friends don't even have houses that don't look like a college apt much less a nice garage. I'm hoping to show them the light and see how fun it is to learn some stuff from dad and do my own car work.
BTW from the pepsi and vending machine you posted, I would have thought you to be older since they are older machines. I also noticed that Wichita sign in your shop, what's that? (I used to live there, just curious).

Cheers to the garage junkies no matter the age.

no worries man there are plenty of us young lads around it is simply we dont have the means to build shops that suit are tastes we are working out of are fathers shops or in the back yard building up our trucks ect. I have had it lucky for the most part I have had a single car garage all to myself but since it is so small a fridge in there would be very worthless and take away valuable floor space.

right now I am working out of a single 3 drawer toolbox on my buddys property working on my truck cause all the rest of my tools are in storage for a few months whilst my father get's a new house and I can move back home it is tuff but I'll survive lol I give my 2 cents to certain threads that concern me or if I have something valuable to add I am not one to just go around trying to get my post count up chatting abought stuff I have no interest in besides it's pepsi If it was coke I would have chimed right on in there lol

by the way I am 17

I recently turned 30 and I don't have a garage or shop yet. I do the work on my '68 Mustang in my parents garage where it's stored. My other project car, the '87 Chevy Caprice wagon has to stay outside since it doesn't fit in the garage with the door closed.

I don't comment or post with every thread. I'm basically here to get ideas for when the time comes when I build my own place, plus you get to know some of the other members after awhile and it starts to feel like family.:)

I've never posted any pics of the garage I work out of because there really isn't anything special about it, plus it's totally packed with stuff. I've done a few things to the garage to make it easier to work but nothing spectacular, basically lighting and paint. Just to work on the car I have to move some stuff outside. It's a standard 2 car garage but it has EVERYTHING in it because they don't allow sheds in the subdivision (it's in the deed) where my parents live. When I find a place it won't be in a subdivision and hopefully it will have some room between it and the neighbors so I can do what I want without anyone telling me what I can or can't have on my property.

Ok, maybe it's over-confidence? I'm not saying that's a "basic pole barn" isn't good, I just wouldn't classify it in the class of "sweet". On this board it takes a bit more to be considered "sweet" (aka BMWPowers, etc.)

And regardless of how nice your shop is, who gets on the web and professes this? It's just weird...

So I ask a simple question and you want to turn it into a "who has the better shop" game.

So since my shop is not as good as bmwpowers I cant say that my shop is sweet? I payed for it, I put in the all the prep work and made it happen, so I am just excited about it thats all.

Ok, we can play that game, I will let you go first, post your shop, or do you even have a shop and you are just trying to start a arguement.

If anyone is weird around here its you.

If my shop is so basic then show me why.

Yes, I have a shop. It's nearly done. You are welcome to look at it, be careful there are over 200 pictures (http://new.photos.yahoo.com/bbowski82/album/576460762310478903#page1).

I have many things that I am proud of, I guess I just wouldn't come out and pat myself on the back. Either way, to each their own, it's good you're proud of your shop; I also did all of the work on mine (except concrete/brick).

I am 57 so I guess I qualify as being "older". However I am interested in garages and shops owned by 24 year olds just as much as those that are 57. Same goes for posts on this forum. This is a great site for those of all ages and has been really invaluable to me in completing my garage-build. It can be that to you too. Good luck.

I never patted myself on the back, I just said my shop was sweet, cause its mine, and I can call it what I want.

Looks like a traditional garage, dang your garage probably cost twice as much as mine did but I have twice the square footage, that *****.

The price of my shop package included them putting it up for me, it was done in 3 days, fully insulated. I did all the other work on mine also with the help of my father.

Your right, to each his own.

I know I am starting to sound like a jerk guys, but this SKINNER guy is making me mad.

Yeah, my neighborhood doesn't allow metal buildings (I'm not a fan of metal), which is okay because all of the garages in the neighborhood match w/ the brick and all.

As for cost, I did everything myself which saves alot of cash. But regardless, I feel like my garage and the way I am finishing it (epoxy, drywall, full bathroom, etc.) will add a lot of value to my home; even a non-car guy would be interested in it. Where as a pole barn/metal building really only appeals to a certain market. You know?

I think all the post on this thread more than makes up for the lack of posts on your Pepsi thread.

If I had the room I might opt for nastalgic items like gas pumps/soda machines ETC. However, since my shop is only 28" x 28" I've limited my shop to things I can hang on the wall.
