After perusing this forum for some time now, and gleaning some awesome ideas, I was inspired to redo my garage. After seeing what XcYZ and regguy1 did with the soffit idea, I thought this was great for some over the bench lighting and I had to copy that! :) Im doing this sort of like one wall at a time :) This is 20 feet long, and there will only be 10 inch opening by 2 feet deep, but leaves me room for cabinets over a workbench if I want them.

Old wall, wavy paneling...

Looks great - but why do away with the storage? Too late now I guess, but could have used threaded rod - or wires - to support, then you'd have room for storage up there....

There is still room for storage up there, just not as much. The old ones were 6' 8" off the ground. I'm only 5' 7", so I would need to get the ladder out anytime I put something up or got something down. I have plans to put some cabinets under the soffit which will still give me the storage I want, but I'll be able to reach them now. :) I did place the lights 18" away from the wall just for this reason.

Thanks for the compliments all!

How deep did you make those soffits?

They are 16" tall by 2 feet deep.

Painted the stripe on the wall. Went with a 5" dark blue with 1" light grey on each side. Will be doing the lower section a darker grey.

But first, I need to cover up these holes in the cinder block... had to fish too many things I've dropped down there! :) Using 1 X 4 glued with liquid nails.

Thanks everybody! I'm getting used to the color, the more I look at, the less it bothers me. :)

Nice soffit/buildout! I like the lights, too. Going to put doors on the front face?

Yes, going to put sliding doors on the fronts at some point, after I get my bench built and some cabinets up.

Starting on the south wall. Tore out the old paneling and OSB, I found some rotted studs that will need to be replaced, also the outside sheathing. This is gonna be a bigger project than expected. I knew there was going to be some issues because of the deteriorated wood on the outside.
