Long time Lurker, First time... well I can't say poster, but, this is the first time for sharing photos of my 25x35 shop.

There are so many great Shops, Garages, Man Caves, whatever you wanna call em on here. I've spent MANY hours drooling over em all..

I bought this place back in April, it had the building already up, and power run to it. underground even. The lighting inside left ALOT to be desired, not to mention the wiring.
IMG_6389.jpg

As you can see, its just straight wire run along the walls/ceiling. No Junction boxes, just wire nuts on most of the connections, with electrical tape on the others. Kinda scary.

I changed out the bad lights, added junction boxes, and tidied up the wiring. I still have to change how the wire is run, but I'm waiting till I find the lights I want.

Since we moved in, its been used as storage, and a workspace when needed to be. There is 'stuff' everywhere...haha I guess thats how it goes?
With cold weather fast approaching, It needs to be insulated, and finished out on the inside. That is where we are currently. Studding out the walls, so I can put up a vapor barrier and insulate, then drywall and get things setup the way I really want.

Here's some current progress pics, you can see the one section that's done. Long way to go. It's just set in place to make sure it'd fit. Its tight, but it went in with a little help.

Heres the rest of the inside, pardon the clutter..

Don't be too harsh on me, I know its not as nice as some on here, but its a starting point.
Sorry no Fancy Pants CAD renderings for me - Just have to wait for updates to see how it unfolds..

Looks like a great space with alot of potential. All you need are some home built shelves along your walls and nice work bench.

Good luck on your quest:)

Man there is so much potential I would take some time and slow the process so you can create the ultimate man cave. I look forward to drooling over this thread in the future.

Thanks All. I was hoping to get another couple of the wall sections finished last night, but I couldnt lay my hands on any PT lumber. Kinda frustrating to see a place like Lowes (yes I hate lowes, but its the only place we have anymore)

I'll be sure to update photos as progress continues.

Update for today. More of the same I'm afraid - but its progress. The 4x4 Post is leaned in 2" at the top. I'll have to adjust accordingly. Still waiting on the vapor barrier..It had to be ordered.. Argh!

Got a bit of a update for this weekend. Man The place is a MESS!! However, I did get to have a bit of fun using my garden tractor to rip out the Previous owners crappy half ...ed workbench. Couldnt figure out how he attached it to the wall so I gave it a good yank and out it came! Much better!

So are you planning on insulating and covering with drywall or wood or something? I have thought about doing something like this is my garage...

I have a pole building construction style garage...is what you are doing the standard way to get a bit more structure to then affix drywall and easier to mounts things? If that makes any sense...

I dunno how anybody else will do it. This is the best way I could figure out to mount cabinets, insulation, new outlets, etc etc etc

what are you planning to use for insulation and why did you order a vapor barrier? You have the exterior wall and its getting hung with drywall or something similar I am sure. All you need is a standard Kraft batt and you are covered. The only reason you'd need a different vapor barrier then the kraft paper is if you are using straight unfaced batts. Then you would need something else because its an exterior wall. With the way you framed that you can only fit up to a 13 and still be able to staple it. Just my .02

Garage has tons of potential and looks to be slowly getting there as it all always takes time.

Actually I should be able to fit R19 there is almost 8 inches from the inside edge to the outer wall. I wanted the wrap to help seal anything out, however I was given a case of spray insulation so I'm using that to seal up anywhere that might let anything in. I am also caulking any of the metal seams I can get to. Was always taught if your gonna do something do it right.

Thanks for the feedback

If you use a vapor barrier with a Kraft batt, you are creating a double vapor barrier and it will mold the second it gets cold out and then warm. So rip the paper off or buy unfaced batts if you are sticking up a vapor barrier.

Didnt realize you were THAT far off the metal wall.

Well I faced all the 4x4 posts with 2x4s and used 2x6's to create the outer frame thus providing ample room for insulation. It also gives me a good starting point for the drywall.

You are right, all it takes is time, and a healthy bankroll. lol

You can buy an R-15 that fits in a 2x4 (3 1/2") wall.

But if you look closely, you can see his 2x4 studs are mounted in 2x6 top and bottom plates. I'm not sure of the size of the poles for the building but he may have more space than the 5 1/2" of a 2x6. It's quite possible that he could put a R19 (has a thickness of 6 1/4") in the wall.

R15 is STUPID expensive b/c its high density. Hence everything says R15Hd (especially Knauf bagging). R11 is the original 3.5, then R13 is slightly denser, then R15 is the "high density" of the 3.5" crowd.

He has it studded off the metal wall enough to get a R19 into the wall and be fine. But even though the outter boards are 2x6, the inner boards are 2x4. If he wasnt studded far off the wall (r19 being 6.25), then it wont stay in the bay and pull outward.

But he is far enough off the metal wall to do r19, as long as he has the room. New code for 2009 is R21 (living space which this isnt), its high density and 5.50" thick, but its a good bit more then R19 per sq ft.

Yep. I forgot some of the fittings I need, and measured wrong when I did the drop, Soooo Its a bit short. There will be two airline drops on the back wall, and two on the side wall with another one feeding Thru the wall.

here is a bit of an update for ya'll.. its been slow going. Money has been tight, had to spend a few hundred on my daily driver - that eats into the shop money!

I've got most of the overhang framed in - next is the arch, it'll make more sense to ya when thats up!

Looking good man. I'm doing the same thing with my pole barn. Framing it out, electrical, then drywall. Right now the electrical is about 60% done, then insulation, and so on.

All you crazy Kentuckians.................Looks up from Nashville, shakes head. :lol_hitti

Another itty bitty update - Worked alot this weekend, and money is still tight - but I got the Archway started. I think it needs some tweaking, but its a start.

I think it needs to drop down some to look right...

Not knowing the look you are going for it's hard to say. Are your going to carry the line from the bottom edge/corner of your arch to the corner of the bottom edge of the shelving? Are you going to totally close off the front? Maybe you feel it should be slightly lower because you can get a glimpse of the top cap plate? I don't think it looks bad. If you are going to keep tall items such as that ladder back there, I don't think I'd be lowering it much further.

You've been busy and got a lot done. The space is really looking good. Nice work.

It'll all be drywall. No Storage back there. Cabinets will be hung under the two sides that are framed up, with the Middle (arch area) being open, there will be lower cabinets and workbench on the bottom thou.

That ladder is a death trap, I double check my life insurance policy before I use it each time..haha
