Lets say you have 650 square feet (+/- 20) available to build a shop. How would you lay it out? Narrow and deep (20x32), wide and short (32x20), L shaped with an alcove? Obviously some shapes are better for some tasks than others, so have at it. Do you devote space to car storage, work space, junk storage?

Can I make it a two story on that foot print or do I only get those 650? What do I have that I need to store, now or in the future, Is there any other storage on the property?

Is there a reason that the 20' part of your challenge is in stone? (so to speak) If it is, 20' will negate using it for a full grown truck or SUV.

Going up is always cheaper/more cost effective than going out. (if thats an option)

Crazy Car Guy, that's a good idea...if you have small cars you may be able to cram 4 in there w/o a lift.

i can tell you that i went through the same thing a year ago when i added to the original garage. i was limited by the set backs so i did 22w x 28d. a single 8' x 16' front door with a 8' x 7' rear door for drive through. i did do 13' ceilings and kept the side windows that are 3'w x 5'h five feet from the floor so that wall is clear that high the complete 28' length. FWIW. have fun!

p.s. i would have gone a couple of feet wider but could not because of the set back.

Wow! I am figuring out the exact same thing right now! I currently have an attached garage and would like to build a detached "workshop" since I will not be able to actually get a vehicle back there, it will not be a garage, which is fine with me! I do metal and wood working and I would also need to incorporate shed space, since I am only allowed 650 TOTAL for out buildings. I am pretty set on 18 ' x 36 ' (648 sq ft). I can only go 15' max to the peak of the roof, so building up is not really an option. I will used the existing attached for working on my vehicles and the workshop for wood working and building parts.

I will and plan to make all of my tools mobile. I will also have a welding curtain to separate the wood from the metal shops, if needed. With everything on wheels I will have the opportunity to open up the spaces if I am working on larger projects.

I am also curious to anyone elses' suggestions as well. Right now I am still in the planning stages.

Here are some pics of how I was thinking about laying it out:

I would go 24' deep x 27' wide = 648 sq. ft. - if I were you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mine is 24x30 (720 sq.ft.) - 1.5 story / 9'high ceiling in main & -6' head room at roof peak:
- 24 deep is ideal for full size pickup or boat & trailer / doing vehicle body work, etc.
- garage doors are 8'high x 10'wide each / like the size
- all oversize garage doors are favored to one side, and it works very well
(other side for equipment, work bench, redi-rack, gas furnace, etc.)
- man door starts 4ft. past the front left corner
(first 4ft. has a vertical sheet of plywood to mount the 100amp Hydro panel)

14" deep WOOD-EYE STRUCTURAL BEAMS on top of the framed 2x6" wall studs / to accept "open area" stick framing on roof (no need for trusses) - T&G plywood upper floor = 700 sq.ft. parts loft.

I build it with one experienced carpenter, in 1991 - booked holidays and worked along side him... to save a wade of cash.

I toyed with the idea of going 30' deep or 30' wide, and wisely chose the later.
- last year I added a 14x21' sun room, plus a cedar deck (about 1/2 the size of the room / due to the house additions, I'm glad my garage is wide and not deep now...fits property better
- I also keep the back of the garage 7ft. off the rear property line (4' minimum is code) / have a slight drop off and makes it easier to cut the grass, with a little extra room

Great idea about putting the compressor on the 2nd floor, never thought about that.

Although, all i have is a small loft for storage, I plan on insulating that attic area, therefore it would be an ideal spot.

Thanks bro

Why start a discussion and not participate?

Is this a woodshop? Metal shop? Multipurpose shop?

Anything you want

Can I make it a two story on that foot print or do I only get those 650? What do I have that I need to store, now or in the future, Is there any other storage on the property?

If you need to, but I am more concerned with how the first floor will work in this instance

No, that was just one of any number of options. It could be 10x65 if thats what works for you!

Forgot I even started it and didn't add a subscription apparently.
